I'd like your opinions on what would the best semi-auto handgun for general CCW. An XD45, SW4586 or a Springfield GI 1911 Champion (4")

I have and XD45, but would like an extra thumb safty like the 1911. The SW4586 is quite heavy, but has a DAO trigger and no safety. The SA GI 1911 Champion could have 1911 reliability issues with certain ammo.

I'm leaning towards the 1911. My shooting skills are only average as I don't get to the range as often as I'd like.

simoniz,

I cannot speak for the 4586, but I have the XD45 and have had 2 Champions and can recommend them both. The XD45 has all the safeties I will ever need and feel very comfortable carrying it as my primary CCW. I have replaced my Champions with a Wilson Professional and carry it as much as the XD. Try both with your favorite holster and I believe you will eventually find the correct system for your needs. Had the XD been my first weapon bought I probably would have never bought a 1911. My first CCW was a revolver but moved on to the 4" 1911 and have never looked back.

Good luck on your decision!

In my experience most of the newer 1911's are reliable with just about any factory ammo. It's only when people start "improving" them that you often see reliability problems.

Of course I carry High powers in .40 S&W so my recent experience is shooting other peoples 1911's.

I found the XD45 just a tad thick and long in the grip to conceal well for me. I'd love to carry one though. It's a nice pistol.
