I really want to get an XD pistol and cant make up my mind what caliber to get. I currently have a USP 9mm and am in love with it. One thing that makes me really want to go with the XD9 is that it can use the .40 clips and hold 15 9mm rounds. Should I go with the 9mm or 40? Also, can a 9mm be just as powerful as a .40 with the right ammunition?

Thanks in advance, and appoligies if these questions have been asked...I used the search button but only came up with "9mm vs 45" threads.

I am also interested in the XD series pistols. The local gunshop I go to have a XD9 in their range pistol selection. I'm going to have to try it out one of these days. I already own a .45 and a .40, so the XD9 would probably be my choice.

Power depends on what you think is important.

High energy 9mm rounds are equivalent to low energy .40 rounds. A hot light .40 will outperform hot light 9mm in terms of energy. On the other hand a heavy "slow" .40 round will have energy equivalent to a hot 9mm but will have more momentum and so will hit a lot harder. On a per round basis .40 is better than 9mm.

On a per magazine basis, you get more shots (2-4 depending on the gun) with a 9mm. That could mean a lot. 9mm hicaps are also more available for many guns than .40 hicaps.

Its a balancing act and you really should pick what you shoot the best because thats what matters most. A magic sword don't mean nothing if you can't swing it.

I'm not much of a fan of the 40 S&W. So, my recommendation is to go w/ the XD 9. I've had opportunity to rent one a few times...really nice guns at a good price. Still a big value!

Let me start by saying that I am not a real fan of 9mm. The only 2 9's in my family both belong to Wifey. Any time I am faced with a decision between 9mm and .40, it's not even a question...

But having said that, I have .40's. I have a few .40's. I keep buying .40's because I already have .40's. Do you see a pattern here?

Since you already have the USP9, I'd vote for the XD9.

On the other hand, if you want to save up your $$$ and get an XD45, then that'd get a different vote altogether :D

The marginal ballistic advantage of the .40 over the 9mm is largely offset by the higher ammunition cost. 9mm is much cheaper, so you'll buy more and practice more for a given amount of money. The 9mm is also more pleasant to shoot, and easier to control. Add the fact that the XD40 mags hold 15 rounds of 9mm, and the choice would be easy for me.

I've had both the XD9 and an XD40.

You won't be disappointed with either.

That being said, the XD40 is now sold, and I'm keeping the 9mm.

As far as the XD45, I want one. But their is no way I'm going to wait until next year. I guess I'll get a 1911 now and an XD45 later.

If its just a question of capacity, although I don't own one, I read on
hkpro.com that you can use the 10 rd. 40 s&w mags in your 9mm increasing your capacity to 13+1.
I've had the pleasure of shooting a number of the HK models, but have
only fondled the XD's. If you really want an XD I'd go for the 9; great product, great price. I'm just not a .40 fan, my user name shows my preference.
Best,

I got the XD-9 last week.

I was having the same questions you are. I went with the 9 because I already own 2 9's and shoot them fairly well. I also bought 2 40 mags and they have both fed perfectly at the range. My recomendation is to go with the 9.
