im trying to decide which gun to buy for my ccw. so far i was looking at a XDsc in 9mm or a springfield 1911.

my main concern is concealability but the 1911 has some allure to me because of all the aftermarket stuff available as well as the possibility of being a great gun for ipsc matches.

what would be the best way to go in your opinion. (also id like to know your take on the whole 9mm vs. .45 thing)

I voted 1911 because thats what I carry and I prefer slim to hi capacity

(also id like to know your take on the whole 9mm vs. .45 thing)

OHHHHHHO BOY... can o'worms! Personally, I feel comfortable with either one, but like different calibers in different platforms. I love me a 9mm 1911.

I voted for the XDsc 9mm, because it is a smaller gun than the 1911 and I think you would be more likely to carry it around all day. YMMV

The single-stack grip of the 1911 and, most likely, narrower slide may make it a bit more concealable - all else being equal. I'm not a big guy and my XD40 SC usually prints a bit. I've not carried a 1911 but if it had the same grip length I would think it would conceal slightly better on a smaller person. On a larger person, I don't know that it would matter.

I voted 1911. I carry a Kimber CRP Pro II daily. It conceals well for me no matter how I dress. My guess is that you will end up owning both eventually.

I also have a Glock 19 that I love carrying, as well. I find myself carrying the 19 more in the summer. It isn't that much lighter to me. It isn't easier to carry or conceal. It's just that if I'm active and sweaty I'd rather ding and scratch up the Glock since it is ugly to begin with. Plus, if I go somewhere and end up having to disarm for whatever reason...well the Glock is the one I'd rather leave in my lock box in my vehicle.

9mm vs 45? Wow...huge can o' worms. I carry both at different times. I feel just as comfortable with 15 rounds of 9mm as I do with 8-9 rounds of 45. I haven't seen any compelling data or heard any arguments that make me feel more comfortable with 9mm, .40 or .45. That dead horse has been beat by many, many different sticks. For me, I'll take any of those (no less than 9mm in an auto)as they all get the job done. If I know I'll be getting into a fight, I know how to avoid the fight and call the cops or bring a rifle because handguns (excluding handcannon revolvers and massive single shots) aren't good at stopping people..
