Today at the range, every time I would forecefully insert the magazine with the slide locked back on my XDM 40 the slide lock would automatically disengage and chamber the first round.

I tried locking the slide back and forcefully hitting the base of the grip in the same motion as inserting the magazine, but it never had the same result.

I also tried 3 different magazines with the same results. It did this about 75% of the time with each of the three magazines I used.

The gun has about 2,500 rounds through it.

I would say that about 75% of the time after a new magazine is inserted the slide catch is used to chamber the first round rather than using the slingshot method.

I inspected the slide catch and the mating surface on the slide and there is no noticeable wear that I can see.

Do you think the slide catch mechanism is just worn out already?

Is there anything else that could cause that?

Thanks

Jonny

Yes, this can happen with a lot of different pistol designs. Some consider it a feature, but I seriously doubt that it was designed as such.

For what it's worth, the XD(M) manual says:
Caution: Do not slam or forcefully jam magazine into magazine well.

And the S&W M&P manual says:
WARNING: DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE UPWARD FORCE
WHEN INSERTING A LOADED MAGAZINE INTO THE
PISTOL. EXCESSIVE UPWARD FORCE COULD CAUSE
THE SLIDE TO MOVE FORWARD, CHAMBERING A ROUND AND
MAKING THE PISTOL READY TO FIRE.

There's a dedicated slide stop spring in the XD, I think. Might be getting a bit soft-

I generally look at springs when a gun starts doing something differently than it did in the past, simply because they're generally the highest wear parts in a gun.

lots of pistol deisgns have done and do what you described. it is not a bad thing in my opinion. Slamming the mag home is the right answer, you want to be darned sure that that mag is gettign seated right, and it is best if you slam it home to ensure that it is. if you are inserting the mag and it causes the slide to go foward, you atleast know you are doing it right.

I've had guns that would release the slide when a fresh magazine was inserted with any force. They never failed to chamber a round. Yes, I did plan to release the slide anyway, but I would rather have more control over it. If the slide stop on this gun is held upward by a spring, this part may have worn out.

recently, we had an STI Gp6 and a daewoe tri action on the range at the same time. positive magazine insertion would drop the slide on both of them.

Of course after inserting a new mag I do always plan to release the slide, but I too like to have control of it. It just caught me off guard. I also let my kids shoot it and I worry about them being caught off guard as well and maybe they don't have perfect trigger finger control.

I guess I will just have to be more vigilant about teaching them.

I will also look at the springs to see if one is owrn out.

Thanks for the responses.

H&K does this also

I don't know if it's a design feature or not but my H&K USPc .40 releases the slide when I "slam the newly loaded mag home"
Remember though... Finger Off Trigger...It's ready even if you're not....
