Xds not returning to battery

After a good cleaning and some lube, I took the xds back to the range. I have only a few FTRTB which I considered this a win. I only had about 4 in my first couple of magazines in comparison to every other round. It may not be super reliable yet, but I do believe it's on it's way to being broken. I have noticed that if I let go of the trigger after a shot there is a higher chance of a FTRTB than when I just hold the trigger and let it out slowly to reset(not to sure what that's about, if anything).

Btw he was using Remington 115 grains the 147 grains was my ammo to see if it will do it as well.

I'd examine the pistol closely, using magnification if appropriate, checking for rough chamber/damaged extractor or burrs on the mating surfaces. If there are none, and I were satisfied the pistol was properly lubricated, I'd go up about 2# on the recoil spring. At that point I'm totally confident the pistol will run. Or you can go through the hassle of returning it to Springfield for repairs and be without the pistol for likely several weeks.

I agree with the advice to send it to SA. Amanda, Dave and the rest of the crew are great. SA will fix it right and get it back ASAP. These pistols should be ultra reliable if everything is in spec.

Don't forget to lube the lugs and outside of barrel. Switch to thicker oil.

Switch to Federal ammo. Rem UMC is hated by all of my pistols. Great for malf practice.

Grip the gun as high as you can. Firm grip, at least until it has 1000 rounds down the pipe.

One common cause of this issue is the striker channel being full of grease and gunk. It is well documented over at XDtalk. Remove the striker, clean the channel and striker very well, and reassemble WITHOUT LUBE. It states in the manual that the striker and channel should be dry.

Cleaning the striker and striker channel is extremely easy to do, and takes all of 10 minutes. Since the XDs has no loaded chamber indicator, having oil/grease in the striker channel can cause hydraulic lock. There is no outlet for pressure. When the striker goes forward, and grease/oil is present, it can cause a light strike. Also, when you fire the gun, and the slide is returning to battery, the striker catches the sear causing the sear to be pulled to the rear of the slide, if grease/oil is present in the channel, between the striker and striker retaining plate, it can hydraulic and stop the slide short of battery. This is because you can't compress a liquid.

I had an XDs .45 with this issue. I cleaned the striker channel and it was packed with grease from the factory. Seemed to cure it.

Also, limp wristing this gun at all will cause FTRB. I could make my XDs .45 do it 3-4 times a magazine by limp wristing the gun. Make sure you are not limp wristing it and causing the failures.

Make sure that the area underneath the extractor hook is clean. If all of this fails to cure the issue, send it back to SA.

You probably will not have to take the striker out. I just sprayed the striker channel with gun degreaser (gun scrubber).

I agree with all the above. Make sure the entire gun is fully degreased. Lightly luge the gun. Shoot it. If it fails on that range trip, call Springfield. They are great people and will correct any issues with that gun.

Expect your gun to shoot ANY commercial 9mm ammo reliably, regardless of bullet weight.

IdahoHk416.... you said... "Since the XDs has no loaded chamber indicator..."

What's that thing on the top of the slide on my XDs that sticks up when there's a round in the chamber? Did you mean a loaded chamber indicator that was integral to the firing pin channel, perchance?

^^^ Sorry, I meant the striker status indicator. The little pin that sticks out of the rear of the slide to show that the striker is in the firing position.

Hey, it was 7am and I just got done working a 12 hour night shift haha:eek:

Thanks for the info. I removed striker and cleaned it. The gun improved drastically. I was really working not to limp wrist while shooting and still have 4 FTRTB. I sent the gun in today.

SA customer service is top notch. They will take care of you. Hopefully they get it running right.

My XDs .45 went back for the recall, and when it came back, started having FTRB issues again. Prior to that, I had a few in the first 200 rounds. I keep my guns very clean and lubricated properly, but didn't consider the striker.

After cleaning that out, I shot over 500 rounds without issue. After the recall, I would have a FTRB every 50 rounds, then every 20 rounds, then once a mag. I was finally fed up with it and traded it in at my LGS. I know the owner well, and informed him if the issue. He sent it back to SA.

I love the size and feel of the XDs. It is a great CCW. But after my experience, and the experiences of many, many other people, I would not own one again.

A good lesson for all who carry and depend on striker fired firearms. Regularly clean and DO NOT LUBE the striker channel. One can of Gunscrubber or equal, will last me over a year.
