I stumbled across an official US Army Website, for the testing of new weapons and equipment.

Most interesting is this part: http://www.otc.army.mil/cctd/CCTD_ISTB_SASS.html

"The XM107 is a rapid-fire; man portable, shoulder-fired, recoil operated semi-automatic system utilizing military standard .50 caliber ammunition. The primary components of the system consist of a rifle, day optical sighting system and hard carrying case(s)."

Pity they haven't included current events.

The home page is also interesting: http://www.otc.army.mil/cctd/cctd_frame.htm

Who was looking for his old units. Long gone now I'm afraid..

Isn't that the Army designation for the Barrett? So what's the problems. The Norwegians bought it, then the USMC and now the Army. Good for them.

Yeah the army refers to the M82 Barrett special application scoped rifles. Cost about 8000 dollars. Shot one in the past, they have less recoil than my serbu bmg.

The Barrett was redesignated the XM-107 because there was funds allocated for the purchase of a different sniper system that was going to be called the M-107. The army decided they didn't need the other system and decided that since the funds were allocated, they'd spend them on the Barrett instead. That required that the M82A1 be redesignated the XM-107.

Let's hear it for "politiking" a "new" (as in already existing) weapon system

Yes, let's hear it for the beancounters that got the weapons to the troops that needed it. If calling it a different name accomplished that, good enough for me.

You can call a Barrett rifle "Susan" for all I care, so long as I get my hands on one when I need one.

I meant no offence in the fact that the rifle is being put out to our troops, I was just playing around with the renaming it part. If anyone took offence at my previous post, I am profusely apologetic :(. As for calling a Barrett something else, as long as our troops get what they need to stay alive, I'm all for it.

Sorry, I jumped on ya a little with both feet... :(

As odd as it sounds, sometimes the beancounters gotta be tricky with the paperwork to get the job done. The Army doesn't have much discretionary funds, relatively speaking. We're given money by Congress. Congress is just as motivated by political pork as it is to giving soldiers the right equipment. (I'm being generous.)

A small arms contract (like the Barrett) is gonna get politically decided. Sometimes the Army has to be sneaky. "Well sir, we have this new weapons system that seems to have real promise. We'd like some money to buy a bunch." Sure, you and I know the difference between the M82 and the M107 is very slight. But your typical Congresscritter or other funding tightwad probably doesn't.

It's just the games we have to play to get what we need.

Pardon me folks,

But the Name the Manufacturer puts on a weapon, has nothing to do with the type classification by the US Army.

AR-15 or M-16, plus variants.

The gun was named when it filled a contract need.

Who has more faith in the procurement system...especially since companies sue like crazy at the least suspecion. :cuss:

When the Barrett was in limited procurement, it was the M82A1. It has now been type classified as the M-107.
