Yaqui Slides

I have several, mostly by Don Hume. I don't carry my 5" 1911 in one because when you sit down, the barrel hits the seat and pushes up in the holster. If you're sitting on a hard chair, you're beating the barrel against a hard surface. They're handy for short barreled pistols but, I always use a full-sized holster for my 1911.

Minimalist or "yaqui-style" are my favorite type of CCW holster, whether belt-slide or paddle. I like my Gould and Goodrich (paddle, CZ), and Milt Sparks (BS, 1911), and Don Hume (BS, Kahr) "minimalists" very much.

A Different Point of View

A lot of gear either never really gets tested or only gets tested under Ideal conditions (e.g., in standing positions, at the range, while one is not trying to divert an attack). Yaqui slide holsters make me nervous, particularly with handguns that are equipped with large front sights, because, if one has to draw from an unconventional position, such as down on the ground, the front sight may snag. Further, unless the holster also has some sort of retaining device, such as a thumb-break (which is not common on most of this genre), I can see the gun being dislodged more easily in a struggle.

"Ah, you're being paranoid," you say. Perhaps, but check out this recent report of two NYPD officers who were shot when one's pistol fell out of its holster during a struggle with a suspect.
...The officers got one handcuff on Mr. Nunez, but he started struggling fiercely, and all three men fell to the floor. One of the officers’ handguns came loose, and a witness said Mr. Nunez got to his feet with the gun and started firing....

I'm not advocating the Yaqui as a uniformed Police holster, only as a concealed carry holster. People who routinely roll around on the ground with criminals should wear a different holster.

Also, I should have added that I had shottist make the retention on my Yaqui extra firm, so that when held upside down the gun will not fall out.

I'll throw up a pic of my holster later.

spwenger...My Gould & Goodrich Yaqui Slide came in yesterday and having the same concerns as you, I when out and hung upside down from my grandkids swing set and bounced in that position. $1076.37 (I bought two spare Kimber magazines) Kimber .45 ACP UCC II never even budged. Of course I purchased the one with two retention adjusting screws. I don't plan on wrestling with any bad guy. That's why I carry. Besides. Unlike a cop, I don't have to deliberately confront a bad guy. I can, if possible, walk away...

As far as the front sight snagging on the holster during the draw. I looked at that too. The angle of the gun in the holster and the angle of the draw will cause the muzzle to move away front the front of the holster and the front sight will not snag. Rolling on the ground? Why would I do that. O K. On the outside chance that that might happen. I tested that theory too. No problem. Muscle training solves that too.

Due to ease of installing it on my belt, comfort of carrying a handgun in it and the ease of getting the handgun from the Yaqui Slide and into action. Not to mention the various places you can put it on your belt has just placed it high on my list of favorites.

For those who suggested it as a viable option...Thank you...

When I attended GUNSITE in 1981, the owner, Jeff Cooper, carried his Colt Govt. Model .45 ACP each day (six days I was there) in a Milt Sparks Yaqui Slide. He seemed quite confident in it.

I have had a Milt Sparks Yaqui Slide for about 25 years or so, and for concealed carry, it works just fine. The only problem one might have, in my opinion, is if one were up and down, up and down from a chair with arms, often. The end of the barrel might hit the arm of the chair, pushing the pistol up and out of the holster.

If one is aware of that disadvantage and watches how one sits down, no problem. ;)

FWIW.

I've got a couple, and while they're well made, quality items - I don't use them. To me they don't hold the piece close or snug enough to the body for my liking.

My preference is for Galco OWB holsters that have always been comfortable, close-fitting and in my opinion, underrated and reasonably priced rigs.

Here is a pic of my shottist.com yaqui slide for my G22.

Well now...As a mater of fact. I have and for the last year too...I'm wearing it now. and I like it for open carry and under a winter coat or a wind breaker. Gould & Goodrich with one retention screw.

Dave, you do realize this thread is 14 months old, right?
Well, he did promise to post pics 14 or 15 months ago...

Got one myself from High Noon, haven't gotten a chance to actually carry with it (I usually carry IWB) but like it so far. Cranked down the tension screws, it seems to hold my Taurus PT-709, Glock 19 and S&W 6906 quite well...
