Ok .. not firearms per se ..... just old pellet pistols. Found this pic and thought I'd post outa interest for anyone who has pellet guns also.

These are old Webley & Scott specimens - I have had them longer than I care to remember! ..... The one on left is in very good shape ... the middle one has a brazed barrel lock lever after a breakage and the right one is ... sorta ''average'' Two are in .177 cal the other in .22.

They have a very modest power factor .. IIRC maybe little more than 6 ft lbs but ..... great sport can be had plinking yellow jackets and flies .... usually from about 6 feet away ..... a challenge only in as much as, there is a need for a steady hand and sometimes fast target aquisition. A simple way to ''keep yer eye in'' .... cheap too!

Do you keep a spare loaded as backup for angry wounded yellow jackets?:D

What do you suppose the average velocity is for that model pellet pistol?

Good point frodo ..... ages since I checked. Come back later and I'll run a few thru chrono ... then do the math and see what actually does come out. That's .177 IIRC.

They are all old re springs too, tho the best one - I did re spring some years back.

OK here we go .....

-------------------------------------------------------------

Webley air pistol tests ........ (Chrony at approx 2 feet distance) .......

.177cal - pellet weight = 7.8grn

Five shot sample ........

428 fps, 439 fps, 443 fps, 432 fps and 435 fps. Average = 435.4 fps (std deviation not bothered with!)

This gives an MV figure of a mere 3.28 ft lbs (oops .. bit less than my guestimated 6!!)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
.22 cal - pellet weight = 12.7 grn
Five shot sample ........
286 fps, 289 fps, 295 fps, 278 fps and 292 fps. Average = 288 fps (std deviation not bothered with!)
This gives an MV figure of a mere 2.34 ft lbs (oops .. even less than my guestimated 6!!)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hmmm ... hardly impressive eh?! The .177 does have the newer spring which would explain better ME figures .... also neither has been shot in ages which may influence MV spread. Not even sure actually whether barrel sealing rubber is perfect either on the .22 cal. It's the .177 I ''play'' with most anyways.
However ... despite the ''puny'' energy .. they do still give great sport with dem yella jackets!!:D
Those velocities are still on par if not a bit better than your average CO2 pellet pistol... and without the need for CO2.
Hey Bob!! ..
Glad to find another ''Club member''!!:) That is one nice target piece there ... BRNO is good gear. Used to do some 10 meter air shooting long time ago .... but forget what piece I used .... it was similar. May be a very low powered weapon but .... tell ya what .... just as difficult to get the big scores as with any other handgun.
Despite all my ''big toys'' I have always had or found room for these plinkers. In fact, I have one way-old Webley MkIII rifle ... in .22 cal ...... under-lever, tap loading. Also an old Wierauch HW35 break barrel .. nicely engineered is that..... which I uprated years ago with new spring and moly treatment ... now however it's gotten a bit slack again .. that's .177.
In more recent times, picked up from Sportsmans Guide a .177 rifle called a ''Eurolux'' ..... huge long side lever cocking and a sorta ''breech'' .... fiddly to load but great for 25 yds and squirrels etc ..... crows too!:evil: Was sold as a ''1,000 fps'' tool but only chrono's 950 ..... still packs some useful punch tho. Calculates at 15.5 ft lbs ..... doesn't sound much but ..... !!
In pic below ...... top is a VERY cheap piece of Chinese crap! But at $19 sorta hard not to try. below that is the HW35 ... which I used to have scoped, then next down is the Webley MkIII (has Parker Hale peep sights at rear) ..... and finally this Eurolux ... quite nice woodwork and size.
Very nice, P9. The only air rifle I have is a break-barrel .177 made by CZ, sold by one of the cataloque companies; I paid extra for the deluxe version, I think it was slightly over $70.00. Very good shooter, loads of fun.
How do you like the Eurolux? I've never tried a sidelever.
''CeeZee's'' are good Bob ... heard quite good reports of those.
The Eurolux?? ...... pretty pleased with it really ....... some aspects ''cheapen'' it a bit ... like crude sights but .... basic mechanics are OK .... and it does ''HIT''! Very good to handle cos so much a ''full size''
IIRC it was about $100 and some .... not cheap but, prolly most power I have had outa spring gun.
Side lever is very good ..... terrific mech advantage. In fact .. the lever can even further extend for weaker people (the spring is mega strong!).
As I mentioned ... loading is somewhat of a pain. Once cocked, you have the breech end of barrel exposed but very fiddly inserting the wee lillte pellet! There is a good safety ratchet, which holds it open for loading ... and you have top release a lever to close action ...... and even then you have to release a safety too .. so good points there.
I'll try and take a quick pic or two to show breech etc later.
OK Bob ... real quick pics here (sorry mods, I know this is handgun!) .......
First pic shows breech ... see the ''teeth'' in lower breech .. the holding mechanism ..... released by push down lever at left. It is awkward gettin finger and thumb at that barrel end tho ...... main drawback if in hurry! Trigger is on safe during this stage. Safety is where you'd expect ... like on shotgun.
Other two pics show it cocked with cocking lever at std length and then with extension slid out .... gives lot of leverage. For price, not too bad ..... most potent air rifle I have had .. verdict ..... 8/10.
Another airgun fan here!
I think we should have an airgun forum on this site.
I have an IZH-46M that can bisect yellow jackets or paper wasps until the sun goes down. I hate the stinging beasts!
I used to have a Benjamin pump pistol in .177 that was powerful enough to take out rabbits and squarels out to 20 meters. For longer shots my RWS 45 had enough punch to do them in.
Right now I am looking for a good back yard pistol that has enough power to take out rabbits again. The IZH-46m is only a paper puncher. I have heard good things about some of the chinese air rifles but their air pistols are crap.
Firestar ...... well, good to see yet another ''Club member''! I used to take rabbits in old days with both .22 Webley rifle and HW35 ..... and now of course .. the Eurolux will do admirably ........ always if poss tho, head shots .... very effective.
The ol Benjamin was a good gun ... knew folks as used em. Also would quite like a Sheridon ''Blue Streak'' .. in 20 cal ....... one of the better pumps IMO. I think if you can reach or wexceed `12 ft lbs then 20 yd rabbit and squirrel shots are well feasable.
Dedicated air weapons forum? Hmmm .... could be useful I guess but maybe not that many of us .. besides, these are if honest a strict ''sideline'' for me ..... much more occupied with the ''big toys''.:p
If it goes ''phut'', ''pop'' or ''bang'' I am interested tho!:D
My only airgun right now is a Daisy Red Ryder that wife bought for me last Christmas as sort of a gag gift...complete with lecture "...Don't shoot your eye out, kid..."
Although when I need a bit of practice, and can't get to the range, a trip to the basement with Red Ryder........
:D
