This is the Remington 597 I bought last night at Joe's Sporting Goods, it was on sale, $139 included a brand new Simmons 3-9X 40 Scope and Leupold See Through rings.

It is my first 22 here in the US, I have few rimfire rifles from my father (RIP) collection in Italy that I still have to bring over here.

Since I become American, I started my gun collection with big and medium bores and handguns but so far I did not have a 22 Long Rifle for cheap plinking at the range...even the cheapest Mosin ammo cannot compete in price with 22 LR.

I did like the look and feel of the 597 better than the Ruger 10/22.

Do you think it was a good price???

Regards

you seem happy as a kid in a candy store, who cares if you got a good deal.but, yes that's a good price.enjoy

Thank you guys....I did like the 597 because of the "big rifle" feel in my hands unlike the Ruger 10/22 which, however, I still consider one of the best rimfire rifle around.

They did have a Mossberg 702 Plinker and a Marlin too but I did not like them as much..they had the look and feel of cheap 22 plinkers.

On top of that, the Ruger, Mossberg and Marlin all were with 18" barrel length, I prefer longer barrels (the 597 is 20").

An other .22 rifle for sale was a tube fed one, I cannot remember the brand (maybe Marlin) but I like much more detachable or column magazine rifles (except for lever action)

I did like the Henry 22 lever they had on the rack..it was really nice

Now I'm on the prowl for a cheap .22 pistol with long barrel....I hope I can find a good deal on a Ruger....

You did fine, and welcome to the United States as a citizen! I'm a Ruger man myself, but you did fine. Buy yourself a few bricks and enjoy some cheap shooting. I'd imagine Italian gun laws aren't as permissive as the ones here.

Guys, just to clarify..I become American 3 years ago and I own already several guns (driving my wife crazy :D:D:D) and "pack heat" almost every day!

I just didn't have a .22 yet...

And yes, gun laws in Italy are very restrictive....too bad because we are one of the major gun producer!!

Thanks to all!!!!

Very nice; likely you will come to love that rifle, and have more fun with it than the other guns combined!

It's funny you say that because last year I debated here on THR if owning a 22 or not....I thought it would not do anything for me..no bang and boom, no recoil....

But the cost of ammo and having fun with my friend's 10/22 at the range changed my mind...now I can't wait to get a .22 pistol...

However I do not think I will buy more rimfire (other than the pistol as I said)

I thought about this purchase for days...buy a 22 LR or one of the new .17 calibers or a 22 Mag???....but ammo cost wise it's a no brainer...even at Wal Mart any of the 17 or the 22 Mag cost at the very minimum 7-8 dollar per box of 50 if not more...no 550 brick pack so far (at least that I know)
At that price we are getting closer to a cheap box of 20 7,62 X 39 for my AK... a bit less round count but a much more "deep" shooting experience

And a .17 or a 22 Mag doesn't really change dramatically what you can do with it compared to a 22 LR...still underpowered for serious varmint and small predator hunting.

I think the 22 LR is impossible to beat on the cost front...some cheap solid can be bought as little as $1.50 or less for a box of 50 at Wally World.

If you want a bit more oomph (not too far from a .17 or a 22 Mag), with 3-4 bucks you can buy a box of Velocitor, Stiner or Aguila Interceptor...

An excellent compromise indeeed, nothing come close in the same category.

Most likely this will not be your last .22 either. They tend to multiply.

Unfortunately the Mosins did multiply (4...one sold and down to 3)

I do not think I will get another .22 other than a Pistol..

I'm squirreling money away for an AR and an Assault .308...and I have some saved if the right 10 mm Auto pistol cross my way...

Welcome to the United States, and glad to have you aboard.

I too thought I would only "need" one 22. I now have 15.

One of them is a 597, which I paid more for than you did yours, so you got a good price. I'm a 10/22 guy myself, (I've got five) but the 597 is a good rifle. I too like the "big rifle" feel it has. I use mine mostly for "bad weather" squirrel hunting. Like this morning, a few weeks ago, when it rained.

Congrats on your new purchase... As a current happy 597 owner, there are a few little things you should do to your 597 to make you both happy... :) I love my 597, and wouldn't trade it for the world. You just need to give it a good cleaning, an adjust the guide rail screws so that they are just barely touching the guide rails... Mine seems to like the Remmy Golden hollow points and the Federal bulk 550 hollow points - as well as anything CCI... It does not like the Federal (blue box brick) solid leads for some reason. Yours will let you know what it likes... :)

Chances are, it won't be your last 22 rifle, I have 5... and I have a llist of ones I want to get... LOL... The 597 is my only semi, the rest are bolts.

Cheers and happy plinking...

Tom

P.S. Am I the only one to remove the irons to lower the scope for better cheek weld purposes????

I too thought I would only "need" one 22. I now have 15.

I hope not!!! :D:evil:

A question for the 597 owners...

The synthetic stock is easy to tap for stud mounting?? Do I need a pilot hole os it is soft enough that I can self tap??? I do not want to ruin it...

Congrats 3 years late.

Gotta have a 22 rifle.

The 597 looks like fun.

My 1st gun was a Remington M581 purchased in the Spring of 1968.

Good thing you're now a US citizen, otherwise you'd end up like the rest of us Legal Permanent Residents in WA state that own firearms...

Second class residents...

Wish I could buy a few new things this year, but I can't...

Nice rifle, I always thought I only needed one .22lr and felt very strong about it. They really are addicting I now have four, this including my wheel gun.

Now all you need is a .17hmr. lol:neener:

Heck of a good price, even without the scope. go over to rimfirecentral.com, and go to the remmy thread, and read the sticky's at the top, to tweak your trigger, and how to fix the rail problem, if you notice yours is jamming up any.
Remmy install the guide rails too tight, so you have to take the action apart, and reinstall, especially the guide rails, to just finger tight, and just enough to get everything installed and back in again. this keeps the rails from being too tight, and binding up, whenever the bolt assy., travels back and forth.

it is also nice, because I think it is the ultimate beater rifle, can take the outdoors and bad weather. plus it is one of the few 22's made anymore, with a fully adjustable rear site assy.
