Ok Guys, I'm apparently the last person on earth that doesn't have an AR, and considering there is one tattooed on my back I'm beginning to feel like I need one.:D

I'm wanting this thing to be as close to an "all purpose" Weapon as possible. By "all purpose" I basically mean hunting (Pigs, deer, maybe coyotes and feed thieves) and defense.

I want to stay relatively light and compact. So far I know I'm going to go with a 16 inch fast twist barrel for heavy bullets, a lightweight free float tube style hand guard of some type, and a giesell trigger. But that's about all iv got figured out.

Anyway what I'm currently pondering is optics. I'm not a fan of a red dot sight. I just don't get along with them for some reason. I'm ok with no magnification but I prefer a duplex reticle of some type. I just don't like dots.

But iv always used low powered scopes on every rifle iv owned. I love them. Unfortunately it seems like a good 1-4 power scope (I love the nightforce offering) would just throw off the balance of a short light carbine.

I know I'm asking a lot here and this has been discussed repetitively but being part of a discussion usually helps me.

So, basically I'm considering an eotech, maybe with magnifier, but it seems like it would be heavy and bulky.

Acog, but iv read eye relief is pretty touchy on them.

The nightforce 1-4, but like I said earlier, heavy and bulky.

Leupold prismatic, seems nearly perfect save for crummy battery life and for some reason everyone hates them.

Iron sights. Yep. Would work well except for being hard to see in low light.

Can anyone help me sort this out a bit?

TA-33 ACOG has very good eye relief (better than the 4x ACOG) and is also very compact. As you can tell, it's what I chose and it works great for me.

most NF are good scopes but the 1-4x is crap. skip it.

my current favorite low power variable is the 1-6x vortex HD gen2
or
the 1-8x USO

both are a bit over $1000 though, but worth every penny.

as you pointed out though, they are heavy. however, they are worth the weight imho. your odds of hitting a quick moving target or a longer range target go up dramatically.

the 4x ACOGs are very nice but do have a small eyebox. the 3x are much more generous, if you're looking for a cheaper fixed power solution
