I realize there are other threads on the subject, but I didn't want to hijack someones thread by asking my own questions. What I have been looking for, unsuccesfully, is a pair of compact wood grips for my SP. I currently have a rubber hogue monogrip, but I find it too grabby when wearing just a t-shirt. I'll probably end up going to some wood hogues if I can't find anything else, but what I really would like to find some grips that are a little more compact. Does anyone make grips for the SP101 that look like the old S&W grips? Or, just some grips that don't extend past the frame? I like the hogues and find them comfortable but it just seems like they make the grips the biggest part of the gun.

Any suggetions on how I can "trim the fat" off my SP?

thank you,

-Kevin

groessebaer,

Thank you for the links. They are very much appreciated.

I thought about the Eagle SS grips a while back but I read somewhere (here I believe) that the quality is just not there for what you'll be paying for them. Those badger grips look like they may be what I'm looking for. They look comfortable but not as large as the hogues. Bronco45 had some positive things to say about them in the previous thread. Does anyone else here use these?

SP 101 Grips

I experimented til I fot a set of Pachemyr (sp?) grips for my SP 101 that I am very pleased with. They are compact hard lightly pebbled rubber, excellent for both concealment and for range sessions.

I bought mine from their website over the 'net. About $ 25 I think (or less).

The Eagle grips are pretty good quality but they rarely fit. I just got another pair for a S&W 686 and I'm going to have to spend some time whittlin' them so they match up and fit the grip frame. A pair of the Secret Service grips I got for my SP-101 have never fit well and are always working loose. Try Hogue's monogrip and you'll be a lot happier.

The_Shootist,

The compac pachmayrs look promising as well. How grabby is the rubber on those? Would something like a t-shirt snag on them or just brush across? In the pictures they look almost like hard nylon, not rubber.

Sorry to hear that don't like the Hogue Rubber Monogrips on you SP101 - at least due to their wearability with certain types of clothing.

I have a SP101 357 2.25" with Hogue Rubber Monogrips that I love. Unfortunately living on Long Island, NY makes it impossible for me to get a carry license and therefore I don't have the clothing issues that you are experiencing. :banghead:

Pachmayr?

Well I've carried my SP 101 in an IWB hoster during a Texas summer and never felt printing due the material was ever an issue, yet if I had to clear leather quickly they would be easy to grab and hold (as opposed to a set of Hogue's I once had on that gun - the P's are a VAST improvement)

This despite being pretty compact and slim - and I have large hands. They are comfortable for range sessions with 158 gr .38 spl wadcustters, to hotter .38 GS or Gold Dot or the FBI load all the way up to .357 GS loads.

Althought by the time I get to using .357 Golden Sabre's in them, I'm not sure ANY grip is going to make a range session in that sized gun TOO enjoyable

Pachmayr Compac on the SP made a huge difference in shootability and comfort for me. Not the prettiest (compared to rich looking fancy woods), but the feel and function is awesome. My shooting sessions with the little SP can easily be extended due to the increased comfort provided by the Pachy's.

Maybe I got lucky but my Eagle grips fit very well.

KevinB... the Pachmayr Compac for the SP does seem to be a harder compound than the Pach Compacs for S&W K-frames for example, works well though and is less sticky on clothing.

In my experience the Hogues were too sticky and the Eagle SS were too soft and were prone to crack. My choices would be Badger boot grips, Uncle Mike's Boot grip or the Pac Compac grip. The UM is the easiest to conceal and is my choice.

KevinB:

Personally, I find the Hogue grips for the SP101 just about perfect for my hand. I like and use the rubber ones. They also make them in hard black nylon. I think they still list them on their website. They cost about $25. If you want a set and Hogue doesn't sell them any more I have some new ones I will sell you. Let me know via "reply post". If I can help you.
