I think that gun might be worth more than $18. Haha. Genius could have pawned it or sold it for more
I would say that it was worth a little more then $18. Here is why.
The Germans Kicked off Operation Barbarossa in 1941 and were stopped at Stalingrad.
Tula, one of the Russian arms factory was located in Stalingrad. The Russians packed up the factory equipment and moved it out of the city so that it would not fall into the German’s hands.
So 1941 was Tula’s lowest year of production which brings a premium when selling to a collector.
The gun was worth over $2000 at the time of the robbery.
Close; it actually was located in Tula, Russia; the town is located 120 miles south of Moscow, far north and west of Stalingrad. (Present Volgograd) As the Germans advanced on Moscow (Which they never did really invade), it was deemed wise to move the arsenal beyond the Urals. Guderian's 2nd Panzergruppe surrounded Tula, but did not take it.

The problem with sharing cool stories is most non-leo's refuse to believe them.
You’re not kidding. I worked psych for 8 years and the stories I could tell.

Ok I have two light hearted cop stories that happened to my father and brother.

1. When my brother was 16 (he’s 41 now) he was on a ride along with my father (Tulsa Officer). They get a call to a robbery. When they get on scene, my dad gets out and goes to interview the victim (store owner). While he’s interviewing him the victim sees the perp crossing the street. My dad radios in and initiates a foot pursuit. While he’s chasing the guy down the sidewalk he hears someone yelling “Dad!!....DAD!!!!!” He looks over and my brother is driving parallel to him in my dad’s unit with red and blues flashing, window down, yelling at him to get in the car. Apparently my brother thought he would save dad from having to the foot pursuit. Luckily just after that, two other units had rolled up ahead and the perp surrendered. To hear my dad tell the story, you can’t help but crack up.

This next one is a copy paste direct from my text messages with my brother 2 nights ago....proof is in the thumbnailed images.

So... yesterday, one of our local psych patients gets into an argument w/ his caretaker over what was fixed for dinner.
The argument escalated and the patient started hitting the wall... then punching the wall... then kicking doors... then stripped down to his underwear and began to rake his nails over his skin...
We were called during the kicking phase, but didn’t arrive until after the raking phase had almost ended...
Th first officer on scene walked in while the guy was sitting in his underwear and was cutting himself w/ his nails.
Th guy then rips off his underwear... grabs his scrotum and rips it open...
The (female) Officer is a bit taken aback, but stays in the room and tries to stop the guy.
At the end of the day... one testicle was never located. (We assume that he ate it) and after he was taken to the hospital, his other one had to be removed.
Most people would never believe what we have to put up with.

Back in the early 70's I worked as a desk sergeant at the military police station in Mannheim, Germany. The graveyard shift was usually when the crazies came out howling at the moon. The German police brought a handcuffed young black soldier into the station and he had a chrome car wheel beauty ring around his neck. The chrome beauty ring was his halo. He was either on some really wild drugs or was completely psychotic I don't know which. He said he was the back Jesus Christ and was here to save us. He went on and on quoting scripture and predicting pestilence, famine and eternal death for all non believers. I called the medical dispensary and told them that I was sending the black Jesus Christ to them for evaluation. A little bit later the doctor on duty called the station and asked if I had Jesus Christ's halo, he was confused and didn't know what the kid was wanting. He was freaking out becoming hysterical because his halo was missing. I told the doctor I did have the halo and I sent a patrol to the dispensary with the beauty ring. Black Jesus Christ immediately calmed down when they gave him his halo. They then sent him the Heidelberg hospital psych ward and I never heard what happened to him.

Your correct. I guess I wasn’t thinking clearly. Everyone knows that Tuls is a city.

As police officers we get to see some very ugly things. One way of dealing with them is finding humor in our work. Sometimes that humor is a little dark, but it keeps us from going crazy.

I'm not a cop, but have many friends that are. From their stories I know folks on the outside do not have a clue to what really goes on in the world, much less the house next door. Woman was shot by her husband a few weeks ago here, and everyone, and I mean everyone that knew them both were shocked, claiming they were such nice people that loved each other deeply. Not the local PD who had been called there a ton of times is the last year. Back when I was a private contractor, I used to do repair work at the local PD station. Much of it was damage done to holding cells/areas from drunk and disorderly folks. I refused to do carpet or floor repair....to much urine and fecal matter for me. While folks on these types of forums are quick to criticize law enforcement and make claims of how many "bad apples" there are, I have nuttin' but respect for most LEOs that have to put their life on the line everytime they put on the uniform.

That said, there are many "can't make this crap up" scenarios that do not involve guns or firearms too. They way kids are raised and the situations they endure. The abuse to spouses(both women and men) and the amount of theft/pilfering by folks most of us think of as respectable. You guys see it all, hard to bring it home with you.

Two brief stories, neither of which deal with firearms alas.
My father was a reserve deputy during the 1970's and 80's so he heard about this one from the arresting officer (backed up by the reporting in the local rag btw).

A genius that lived in a trailer park behind a rural mom and pop store decided to burglarize the store at night. He took a bag of pennies which unbeknownst to him had a hole in it. When the police were called in the morning by the owners, all the police had to do was follow the trail of bright shiny pennies from the store to the perpetrator's trailer--a distance of about 100 feet. The remaining pennies were recovered at the trailer as the crook had failed to get up at the crack of dawn and he was still sleeping when the deputies came knocking. The deputies obviously got a slam dunk confession and admittance of guilt.

Much later, my father who hated to stay at home even when totally disabled, would answer phones for a local wrecker service/used car dealer who was a friend of his. This is what happened one night-----

One night, the police notify the wrecker service that their services were needed. When the wrecker arrived, there was no wreck, but a tweaker drug dealer had apparently "crashed" as in going into a deep sleep during the middle of his delivery run of meth--in the middle of a state highway in a populated area. The police found the guy with the car door open, motor running, and at least the tweaker had the sense to put the car in park. In the car, cash and meth was found along with a list of names addresses, and phone numbers, with those conveniently marked as to who had paid and received their meth. The guy went from mailbox to mailbox in the middle of the night and collected his money from the mail box and left the meth accordingly just like the U.S. Mail. Needless to say, the tweaker dealer went down for the count for major felonies along with many of his customers who had not yet woken to receive their goodies from the mailbox.

I am a safety engineer, and see some good ones... like the ladder I recently found held together with zip ties and a wire brush. No, they had not bothered to tell anybody that they needed a new ladder. Gotta see it to believe it.

I thought the attachments were going to be pictures of the victim. It probably says something unflattering about me that I was mildly disappointed they were only screen shots of the text messages.

Lol. Sorry to disappoint. As a psych patient, that would be a HIPAA violation. I do get pictures from time to time from him. Most of them would not be allowed on this forum. Growing up with a dad as a cop and a mom as an ER nurse, my brother and I have seen more than most people. And it doesn’t phase us. Even in person. Saw my first dead body outside of a funeral on a ride along with my dad at 15. Guy had been hanging in his back yard for a week in the middle of summer. Smell was horrible. Maggots everywhere. When we cleared the scene, we went and had Chinese food. It’s just how you’re raised I guess.

I was questioning myself as to whether it would even chamber a 9mm. ......... 9mm is about .354" and 7.62 is about .310"... hmmm? you musta' recovered a long 9mm bullet from the tank? heheheh :) I have one of those (Romanian I think) TT's and it's in much better condition.
Right now I have a couplea' boxes of ammo for it that are the right size. I'll use them before switching to 9's. :)

Was a f/b post not terribly long ago of a fellow who tried to demonstrate that his steel toe boots would stop a .45acp. From the accompanying photos, dude was lucky, bullet passed right between the large toe and the second. The derp is high out there.

Being a Vol firefighter in a rural area is right up there with them though. Often times we get there before LE. Only firearm related story is of a local guy that was sort of "off" and decided to torch his trailer one cold December night. We arrived and proceeded to put out the fire as normal. About 1/2 hour into it one of the guys looks over at the side of the garage and there is the the guy kind of back in the shadows sitting in a rocking chair rocking back and forth in the snow with a loaded 12 GA across his lap just watching us put it out. Talk about a little bit of a tense time until the deputy snuck around and relieved him of the shotty.

While working as an army MP in Germany our procedure for inserting magazines in our 1911's was you drew your weapon at the company arms room then went to the MP station where you drew your magazine of 5 rounds. Prior to going on duty we were inspected for uniform appearance and firearm cleanliness. The procedure was after the weapon was inspected you released the slide and pulled the trigger while it was pointed upwards and then holstered. After the pistol was holstered you then inserted the magazine into the pistol. We were not allowed to load a round into the chamber. Some one higher up in the food chain thought there was a safety problem with this procedure and designed a "fool proof" new procedure that would prevent AD's. The new procedure was to bring the pistol to the inspection position with the slide locked back open, then you were to release the slide, pull the trigger, insert the magazine and then holster the pistol. At one of the other MP stations on the first time they used the new safer procedure an individual got mixed up and inserted the magazine before he released the slide and pulled the trigger. They had to get a roof repairman the next day to repair the hole in the roof. The original procedure had been used for years with no AD's. Naturally the NCO in charge of the shift was blamed for the accidental discharge not the brilliant officer who tried to fix a problem that didn't exist.

During my last tour in German, at that time most of the bases used GI guards at the entrance to the compound. There was an office that was in charge of the management of the base itself. This office was not authorized personnel to pull gate security duties, units were tasked with providing personnel for this function. Because of the training required to pull gate duty soldiers were detailed for a period of time to provide this service. Naturally when a unit was tasked to provide someone the commander usually sent one of his lesser capable (dud) soldiers, no commander was going to send one of his best troops as they were needed to maintain the team efficiency. One day one of these guards was going off shift and his German girlfriend came to pick him up to go home. She was walking in front of him to the arms room to turn in his pistol and he pulled the gun out pointing it at the back of her head and pulled the trigger. It blew her brains out all over the ground. He didn't intend on shooting her, just goofing around. Forgot that he had loaded a round into the chamber when he went on duty, which was violating procedure.

One day back when I worked at my local health dept, a patient locked her keys in her minivan.

This being public health, within 15 minutes someone showed up at the health dept that knew how to open a locked vehicle

I live in a town with a Navy Air Base. Not two long ago a couple of boys were arrested for pointing their lasers into Pilots eyes. I do not know how they were caught, but I am sure the Pilot had equipment to "Lasered in on them" and give the location to the Police.

I test fired it with 7.62x25. We did find it funny that he had loaded the mag with 9mm.
