When flying when an air traffic controller tells the pilots the altimeter, the pilots always have to respond, and then both pilots verify they have it set verbally. Above transition altitude the altimeter is 2992. However the local altimeter when below the transition altitude vary slightly. So...
Whenever I hear the controller call out the altimeter when it is 3006 they always say "three zero zero six" and the pilots read it back the same way. I always hope that someone says "thirty ought six" instead. I was highly disappointed in one of my pilots when the controller did in fact say "thirty ought six" and he asked to verify the altimeter again. Well at least one of them must be a gun guy!
