I don't do SHTF or survivalist scenarios, guns to me are a collecting hobby and SD necessity, so diversity makes my world go round.

Yes - your right . Just like the folks that settled this land , a single smooth bore gun was all that was needed. Today, folks forgot the difference between needs and wants. Reminders are coming, but until then , I got a few more than I used to have.

Depends on what one wants to do. Sure a 12 gauge, 870 with a 18 to 20 inch barrel will do a lot of things decently enough -- sort of. But --

• I have a few pistols that are much more useful when I can legally carry, and want to carry, in public a gun concealed for self defense.
  
  
• When I was actively shooting ATA trap competitive, my trap gun was a much better choice.
  
  
• When I want to help teach a beginner to shoot, my .22 pistol and my .22 rifle are more useful.
  
  
• When I'm hunting pheasant, I love the way my SxS mounts and swings.
  
  
• And of course an 870 is completely useless for USPSA (except the shotgun leg of 3-gun), IDPA or Cowboy Action Shooting.

If I could only have one gun it would probably be a Glock 19. It would definitely be a pistol. I am not about to try and carry a long gun around with me.

You might only need the shotgun, but that is you...not necessarily anybody else.

Umm... How about the ability to defend yourself outside of your home?

My one and only gun for a while was a defensive pistol. A Sig 228. No, I couldn't drop a bird with it, but personally I'm much more concerned with my ability to stop someone attacking me than my ability to get food by hunting.

I want to see someone concealing a 18" shotgun in shorts and a t-shirt. Not gona happen. But you can rest assured that I can do that with my pistol. And one more thing that gives an edge to the pistol: its easier to hide. Little things like this are important for those still living with roommates or in apartments (and those without CCW permits). Walk out the door with a long gun case and everyone knows that you've got a shotgun/rifle. Walk out with a backpack or a laptop case and no one has a clue.

mnrivrat: I think the needs are changing. When the west was being settled, someone could walk outside with a long gun and the most they'd probably get asked would be "good afternoon, sir. Going hunting?" Try that in a city today. While it is probably still legal, there is a very good chance that you're at least going to get hassled by LEOs. When your neighbor is likely to call the cops on you, discretion becomes a necessity.

My other guns right now are two combat style rifles, and hopefully another combat type pistol soon. No shotgun in sight. I do have access to one through friends and family should I go hunting or trap shooting, but I don't have any immediate need for one in my personal collection. To say it is the ONLY gun that anyone needs is a bit presumptuous. Especially on a board full of gun collectors/shooters.

Well by that great thought process, then I don't "need" any gun. I can buy any food I need at the store and have the police to protect me right?

Just because our ancestors only used a single gun doesn't mean they wouldn't of had more if they had the option. Times have changed a lot since then, and honestly, not taking advantage of the technology and options we currently have is just asinine.
