.......the first time they pick up a gun.

I have a range on my place and from time to time I teach new shooters basic shooting skills. I do it just because I like to and I generally supply the guns and ammo.

In the past I taught a friend's three boys to shoot and recently taught his 16 year old daughter. All the boys are good shots but are topped by their sister.

The girl asked if I would teach her friend. The girl friend's parents aren't "gun people", so the girl had never even touched a gun before and knew noting about them.

I already wrote up a long version of the girl's shooting, http://www.glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1157997
so I'll just hit the highlights and pictures.

I started the girl off with a Ruger 22/45 at about 6 yards. Immediately she shot well with the 22, keeping all shots in the 8x11 inch silhouette and most in 3-4 inch groups.
She shot 4-5 magazines.

I told her, let's try the S&W 3 inch 38 J Frame. She took right to the little revolver and again shot nice groups in the little silhouette targets. About 30 rounds SA.

Next target.
The full size old Texas concealed carry qualification target, shooting DA.
This time shooting while on the move, backing twice up, moving right and moving left.
She missed once, over the shoulder, once barely in the shoulder and in the neck. The rest of her shots were COM or solid body shots.

Her shooting while back-peddling.

Now I told her, Five more shots, head shots, misses aren't acceptable, but you can shoot SA.
Her five shots are the smiley face.

Next target. The hostage target where the BG has the girl and is pointing a gun at you.
Ten yards, SA or DA, 5 shots, misses or hitting the girl isn't acceptable.
First shot was between the BG's eyes and the next four in the head to.
Us spectators were amazed. (I forgot to get a picture, or of the next hostage target that she put a bunch of 38's in)

Then for a while the two girls blasted cans and targets with their 3 inch Smiths.

As it got dark the young lady finished up the last of the 38 ammunition shooting my Crimson Trace equipped J Frame.

I sure hope she continues with her shooting. I'll be glad to give her all the 38 special ammo she can shoot.:D
She shot the J Frame about as good as anyone I've seen that's been shooting for years.

It's always good when someone can properly introduce another to the world of firearms. Good job, Brother.

Good on you for teaching people who wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to learn.

Plus, you seem to be pretty good at it!

Hello friends and neighbors // The younguns are lucky to have you and visaversa.

Outstanding --your efforts/kindness her openmindedness/natural ability.
Non stationary shooting on the first day too! Smart man to teach reality.

She is LUCKY to have had a GOOD teacher. Far too many young/new shooters are not helped in their first outings. You did good and she will get better as time goes because of your efforts.

I'll offer a big "pat-on-the-back" with an 'att'a boy" thrown in! :D

We also had a few minutes before dark to dispell the myth of those "evil assault rifles" and let her run a couple magazines through this S&W M&P 15-22.
Plus she used the Streamlight laser/light to "unload" a magazine on a bunch of criminal cans.:)

Now you're just corrupting her young mind with your evil black rifles
Even better!
I taught the neighbor lady to shoot. At her CHL class one of the LEO instructors suggested that the ladies learn to shoot the AR.
Prior to this I couldn't get her to shoot the rifle because she thought it was too big and heavy.
So she asked me if I would teach her. Now she loves the rifle and, I think, has it on her Christmas list.:D

BTW, the S&W M&P 22 makes a teriffic trainer for the AR because the controls and size is exactly like the .223 AR. After running a bunch of (inexpensive) ammo through the Smith, the shooter is immediately comfortable with the AR.

These threads are great. It's hard for me to always keep in mind that most folks don't grow up around firearms as a way of life.
You are a great teacher!

I used to teach NRA Women's Defensive Pistol classes and I absolutely love teaching women to shoot. They listen and do exactly what you tell them and hit the target. And grin. It was so much easier than teaching men. And some of them were drop dead gorgeous too.

My girlfriends could always out-shoot my buddies.

What was really funny was when a male friend, that had been shooting for a while, would bring a wife or new girlfriend shooting for the first time and inside a day or two of "on the fly" instruction the girl would beat the man shooting.:D

The first time a fellow Policeman and I brought our ladies shooting I told him, Now don't get all upset when my girlfriend beats you shooting (he had a little ego).
He said, "No girl is going to beat me shooting".
I said, "I can out shoot you, right?".
He said, "Well yeah".
I said, "I taught the girl to shoot and on a good day she can beat me".

What was hilarious was, his girlfriend had never shot a gun before, but all through the day I was giving her shooting instructions.
Usually at the end of the day we would make up a final shooting contest. Usually it was sudden death, you miss and you are out. As I recall that day we were shooting at Christmas tree light bulbs.
At the end of the contest the standing was,
me, my girlfriend, HIS GIRLFRIEND and my buddy.

You know I didn't rub that in for a while.:D

good for you and good for us all. keep up the good work. any one of us who has ever taken a lady to the range for the first time will not be surprised by the fact that they have an uncanny natural affinity for it. something about their being hard-wired for fine motor skill gives them a natural advantage.
God bless 'em for it and keep recruiting!

Here's a update on the young lady, the subject of this thread.

My friend's daughter and her friend came over to shoot today.

The girls started off with the Ruger 22/45 and S&W 2 inch 22LR Mod 34. Then they went to 2 and 3 inch S&W J frames.
Then my friend's daughter shot my 45 Kimber Compact Custom (4 inch). Six shots and I called a cease fire. The girl had made a centered cloverleaf with four shots and the other two shots made one hole next to the cloverleaf.
I saved the target for her.
Next six shots also made a keeper target.:)

After making some more keeper targets while shooting while moving, I told the girls, "You are making this stuff look entirely too easy. Shoot one handed left hand for a while". I'm a hard taskmaster.:D

Then the girls shot the SIG 522 I bought at the gun show Sunday. They liked the gun and ran 6-8 magazines through it.

Lastly I checked out our new shooter on the 45 Kimber. She took to the 45 like a duck to water.
So, how about seeing how good she does on the Texas concealed carry qualification course, even though as of yet she hadn't shot from 15 yards. The course is 50 timed shots, from 3-7-15 yards, for 250 points. Shots range from a single shot in two seconds to 5 shots in fifteen seconds at 15 yards.
She scored a great 242/250. That on only the second day the girl has shot a gun and the first time shooting a 45 ACP 1911 pistol.
In six months I'm going to play hell out shooting these girls.:D
