Florida Update: Concealed Carry Permits Up, Violent Crime Down

If it saves even one life ...

Most Democrats and some Republicans believe this. The problem is that they are defending the lives of criminals, not the rest of us. The guy who is trying to kill you, rape you, your wife or your daughter and steal your property is more valuable than you are.

I HATE that "if it saves even one life" argument. If it saves even one life, none of us should drive a car, ride in an airplane, allow swimming pools, trampolines, eating, drinking, sleeping...

If it saves one life, how many will it cost?

I remember the anguishing and hand-wringing that was going on in the media (and its following public) as the bill's effective date was coming up. It was widely predicted that "the streets would run awash, red, in the blood of innocents, as gun-toting Floridians dueled it out Old West style over everything from girls to parking spaces."
This was the same year I became old enough to lawfully buy a handgun form a dealer, and I did. Four, actually, during that year, the last of which was bought the same day I was sworn in as a police officer. I never had any issue with citizens carrying firearms in a lawful manner.

Prior to that year, each county regulated carry practices. Some were "may-issue", some were "no-issue", and there were probably a handful (of the state's 67 counties) that did not have any regulations. Some may have honored others' permits, but this was rare. I lived and worked in Palm Beach County, which could have been said to be trying to be a "mini-New York City". Still is, it seems, though I live well north of there now.

I'm still waiting for all the bloodshed to materialize.. but glad it has not.

I am a proponent of concealed carry, but this does not prove much of anything.

While it is true that there is no reason to believe that more permits CAUSED less violent crime, it is absolute PROOF that more permits DID NOT cause MORE violent crime, which is what the antis are always spouting. So the information is important, and it is useful for us to pass it along to everyone we can. We have to fight illogic and emotion anytime and any way we can. We use facts and logic to do so, and these facts are definitely in our favor.
