You should encourage your friend and his daughter to enquire if this guy was associated with the MS-13 gang and push to find out if they should expect this guy or his compadre's to show up to exact some retribution.
True, if they are used with aggression and commitment. If she'd only hit him once or twice, the results could have been disastrous. The problem, I believe, is that many people -- men and women -- would have stopped smacking him with the bat too soon. Beating someone with a blunt instrument is something that a lot of us are not really prepared to do. It can be ugly. They are very handy weapons, that can be used effectively by people with little upper body strength.
Were I to issue letter grades based on Cooper's Principles for this event, they would be as follows:
Alertness: D
Decisiveness: A
Aggressiveness: A+
Speed: A
Coolness: Don't know for sure, but I'm betting at least a solid B, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were higher.
Ruthlessness: A+
Surprise: A
All I have to go by is the OP's account. If your alertness is excellent, you should be aware of who is around you. Feel free to give your own letter grade for her alertness. Tips have been given in this thread that would've likely allowed her to spot an ambush or someone following her.
Most of the time if your Alertness is an "A" or even a "B" you don't get graded on the other 6 Principles.
Usually when I see a gazelle taken down by a large cat, the gazelle makes a defensive move before the cat makes contact.
Correct. And why does the cat make his move from distance, if the gazelle isn't going to spot him until he makes his move? Because the cat knows from experience that isn't so- if he pushes it much closer the gazelle will spot him before he makes his move, and instead of the gazelle responding to his sprint, he'll be responding to the gazelle's sprint, thereby putting him 2 reaction times (the gazelle & his) behind, relatively speaking.Gazelle have much better sense than humans do and if you watch closely, the usually do not detect the cat until he makes his move.
The OP did not say anything to allow conclusions to be drawn about whether or not she was being alert.
Wrong, but when I am, I give myself a low grade for alertness. Like I said, feel free to give your own grade. I'm not changing mine. You are never taken by surprise by anything ever.
