.44 mag is about at my upper limit. While a 45 ACP is a popgun in comparison, I really do like my old Colt 1917. My .44 is a Vaquero and I don't load it very hot.
To me a big bore is a .41 or larger. Hard to say what would be my favorite because I like so many. But I did search for a 5" 1950 Target .44 Special for about 25 years before buying a matched set.
I spent the same amount of time searching for a 5" nickel 3rd Model of 1926
.44 Special and wound up buying a pair of these, as well.
the only one I currently own is a Charter Arms Bulldog in 44 special (circa 1983). It is a great carry piece and a fun shooter. I plan on picking up another 44 special but DAM!!!!! ammo is scarce and expensive!
4 5/8" Blackhawk in .41Mag. For me it handles anything I'll ever need handled. I'd love to see it available in Stainless but for now the blued version does the job nicely for me.
Ohhhhhhh look twins! Yes but ones really fast and the other is really big!
I enjoy the big bore handguns, shot a friends .45-70 in a T/C Encore 10", what a tack driver! I could keep 1" groups at 100 yards. I'd like to get the
.444 Marlin for mine.
my best friend and mentor shot silhouettes with a .444 marlin contender for awhile...... put the rams down with real authority!!! like a sledge hammer!!!
to me a big bore revolver starts with .357 magnum caliber..... and i'd still take my s&w model 27 over many others.... it's just hard to beat the graceful lines of the tapered barrel on that handgun!
Yeah..... I said it, hope this thread doesn't catch a blaze. But seriously, pretty decent and well - built gun for the price. It can handle .44 Mag +p+, so it's fine in my book. Now I only need a good Ruger piece to go along with it !!!
Pictured along with (6) 240. gr. Soft Point DoubleTap rounds. 1500 fps./ 1200 ft.lbs. Definetely a POTENT package.
625MG in .45 Colt. A close second is the excellent value 625JM 4" .45 ACP/AR. Actually, it should be #1, considering the value and frugal/available ammo. I can swap between my HiViz and the OEM gold beaded Patridge sight quickly. And, Wally World carries ammo... The 625MG requires my basement ammo factory. Come to think of it, so does my 625JM - it can load those neat .45 Auto Rims bearing .45 Colt loads, like the 255gr LSWC, at higher than .45 Colt SAAMI levels (The .45 Colt is 14 kpsi vs the .45 ACP's 21 kpsi rating.). Still, nothing is more fun than blasting away with moonclipped .45 ACP hard ball. Note: some folks insist that the 4" 625 recoils more than a typical 1911. They are correct - to a small degree - the self-feeding mechanism does 'use' some of the recoil energy. Still, it is relatively mild for a true big-bore.
I just love my Redhawk, I got it Magna ported some time back and have been very happy with it. I recently purchased some Garrett's heavy 330 hammer head 44 Magnum loads. What kick in the pants... I take it with me when I hike in the Sierra's and feel very safe with it.
Ruger .45 Colt Bisley Vaquero - 5-1/2 stainless. The size and weight makes it pleasure to shoot with standard pressure loads. Model 25 Mountain Gun is a close 2nd.
