Your mosin m44 experience

Well, you might not want to read this, but I was a terrible shot with my two Russian MN 44s at 50 yards from a benchrest.
This was with the bayonets extended Or retracted, mostly extended.

The ammo was primarily Bulgarian from the dusty, gray spam cans.
Rifling seemed pretty good in both guns, but being unable to get a group within 5" at 50 yards I sold both of them. Maybe ammo from Russia, Poland, Hungary etc would have worked better?

For what it's worth, I can get 4" groups at 100 yards with my Enfield #4s, #5s, Garand and sometimes the Yugo Mauser. All have original iron sights.
Your future MN 44 might be much better than mine.

Bulgarian surplus has that reputation.

I have heard others say Bulgarian surplus is not very tight for groups, and you should inspect each specimen to see if you want to chance it...

The Wolf or Bear might have been a better choice for whether you would keep them. It is not all that great but is fairly functional. I tire pretty fast of the steel case heavy stuff, especially shooting paper.

hey ignition: try taking the bayonet off. completely. that got my rifle to shoot VERY accurately with bulgarian. before i took it off i got 7 inch patterns at 25 yds. after i removed it: 3-5 inch groups at 75 and improving. maybe i am lucky who knows

Riven clean the bore, little by little.

You might find out it gets better over time, if you can get the canyons a little clearer in the bore.

oh, i already got the bore to shine like a mirror and patches come out almost white. i think any more improvement will need me to get better eyes :D
my vision when wearing glasses is currently about 20/30, which is about as good as i have ever gotten. i know it sucks. but without glasses it is off the scale. i cannot even see biggest letter on the chart. or the chart for that matter. lol
i think the only reason i get small groups at 100 or 75 yds is cause i got fairly decent at aiming by reference. not sure what the actual term is though, but i use reference points i can see to know where the target is. and i use a peep on my mosin. if you want i can show you where i got it. i am sure the guy who makes em wont mind a new customer.

wow

I don't think I would have wanted to be a Soviet infantryman. Talk about giving your position away!
I wonder if the fireball could be minimized with modern powders.I know that fireball is one of the "features" of the carbines but to me it would be too much.I own a pair of 91/30's and I am not sure that I would enjoy the "show"!:banghead:

I have a carbine with a bayonet. I cant remember what the model is but I think it is from Tula. I know it is Russian. Anyway we used to take it everywhere in Alaska. We never actually shot anything with it which is very fortunate. The last thing you want to do in Alaska is have to shoot an angry bear or moose. We used the bayonet a few times to dig little holes. It also makes for a good tent stake. But it was great because it was $90 and we didnt care about it getting dirty or wet. If it craps out just get another one.

Actually shooting it is a bit of an experience. Its loud, kicks like a mule, and has an explosion at the muzzle. I did lose the bolt a while back though. I need to get another one.

It looks to me like the "FIREBALL" is by far the most important selling point.
Ya, whatever! :)

I just pulled the trigger on the "Rifle of the Day" at Classic Firearms:

M44 Laminate.

I asked the young lady just last week if she had any of the laminates; NO was the answer.

Well, today I see these five available. Now there is four available.
After giving her my debit card, she said it was "REJECTED!!!!!!"

the horror......the horror..... (I deposited 1600 bucks on Saturday..........guess they don't post until sometime today)

She then told me that she couldn't hold it! :(

"Honey, do ya have a credit card I can use?" I asked of my wife.
Lucky I fixed her and her mom a Lobster and Fillet Mignon dinner last night, eh?

Deal is done, rifle is traveling to my FFL here in Goleta California on this bright 88° Monday morning.

nebraska_farmer, my 15 year old is impressed with the fireball.

I am however impressed that I was able somehow to pull a laminate M44 out of thin air.

Dave

PS This will complement my Russian Parade Laminate SKS well.

You miss the Soviet intent. It was to have a combo flame thrower and concussion grenade, the rifle shooting bullets was just an afterthought. (;>)

Sorry for coming late to the party. I have one and I shoot it with just the standard steel butt.
I don't find the recoil to be that bad for me. It DOES make a nice big BOOOOOM and gets a lot of attention at the range.

Man, at 60 bucks, don't ya wish!

I had the chance to buy Russian SKS's as many as I wanted for 89 bucks. Spent all my money on ammo that trip :(

I just recently paid $140 for my first M44. Haven't had the chance to shoot it as of yet, but I've shot a 91/30 and really enjoyed it. Mine seems to not reliably eject when cycling rounds though.

I love mine. 1944 Izhevsk (Russian). I run mine 99% factory condition minus stock refurbishing and some trigger work (super easy to do the way I did it).

Being 5'11" and 235-240 pounds, I can shoot that rifle with steel butt-plate all day. The recoil doesn't bother me.

I'll tell ya, I don't think I will do a darn thing to the one I got coming.
A thorough strip 'n clean/inspect and then, it's off to the range.

I'm 6'1" and 225 LJ, so like you I think I will be blasting all day long if I can get it out of the kid's hands. My eldest is 6'2" and 195 and 15 years old. The little guy is the fire plug.

Can't wait..........but I live in Cali and I HAVE TO WAIT!

In 1988 attended the SOF convention in Las Vegas. Bought two SKS rifles for that $89.00 price and two 1200 round wooden crates of 7.62x39 for $90.00 each.

Still have one of the rifles and an unopened crate.
