Your opinion of Smith's M&P .357s 3.5" barrel.[/B] I'm an old retired guy still partial to wheel guns. My companion for over twenty years has been a Ruger Security Six 4". I have a chance to pickup Ruger GP-100 3" or the Smith M&P .357s not both ... $$$ in short supply. Presently leaning toward the "Smith even though the ammo is not interchangeable with my Ruger. Would like to get some opinions. Thanks.

I can't comment on the .357 SIG cartridge, never having shot anything in that caliber, but a M&P compact 9mm I had functioned 100% perfectly from the very first round.

However, I bought a M&P45 compact for an old girlfriend, and it was a great gun. I bought a regular M&P9 for myself, and it only got sold because I bought an M&P9pro, so I din't need two of the same guns.
I love the M&P line, and recommend it whenever I have a chance. However, try to rent one at a range first to see if you like it. That's the best advice for anyone thinking about putting hard earned money towards a new gun.

don't bother with the expensive 357sig then.
the FBI tested it against a hot 9mm and found it to be no more effective.
just get the 9mm m&p, and load it with +P or +P+. range ammo is really cheap. JMHO

The only problem with this is that the hot +P and +P+ ammo that actually performs close to the .357Sig is sometimes even more expensive than the .357Sig ammo that it competes against.
I say go for it and get the .357Sig M&P.
And then get a .40S&W drop-in conversion barrel.

Have a full size M&P 357 Sig 4 1/4" barrel. It been a good pistol. Reliable and shoots good, ergonomics are excellent. The slide to frame fit was a little looser on mine than I would like to see on a semi auto pistol. Don't know if they are all that way or not. One nice thing I like about S&W M&P, is they have a lifetime warranty.
Back when I ordered mine a couple years ago, the thumb safety was not available. But if I was to get one now, I would get it with a thumb safety. Mostly because I have lightened the trigger pull on mine with a $30 APEX Hard Sear.
The GP-100 is an excellent pistol, I don't think you will go wrong either way. Biggest advantage the M&P 357 has over the GP-100 is weight if your going to carry it.
I agree with easyg typical +P+ 9mm HP loads are more expensive than what I pay for 357 Sig HP ammo. At least that is the way it is around here.

I love my M&P .357 Sig.
Its a FAST and flat shooting round. Its not more violent than a .40 though.
what i love about the M&P 357sig is that for $60 you can get a factory .40 barrel and that is all you need to change to shoot cheaper .40 ammo.
I typically shoot the 40 at the range and put my .357 sig barrel in for carry and nightstand duty.
that .357 sig round is amazing!... i walked into a smoking deal on my M&P 357 and took the chance.. it was a great decision.
