Robinson Armament's new XCR in 6.5 Grendel.
Why RA XCR? Modular, with easily switchable barrel lengths and calibers, and Picatinny rails for various optics. Ambidextrous, with selector and magazine and bolt release operable by either hand. Charging handle on left and right ejection is only concession to the fact that realistically there are only 15% lefties out there (not including switching shooting shoulders for tactical reasons). Ergonomic, with mag release in same easy spot as AR series, and bolt release in a better position at rear of mag well. Stock folds for portability. OK, stock shape could be better or at least have a foam sleeve for comfortable cheek weld. Reliable, don't yet know without test results, although I'm very pleased it has a gas-piston system, for what that's worth.
Why 6.5 Grendel? Twice the lead of 5.56 for increased wounding and penetration capability, yet fits in same size rifle. Much more flexible than 6.8 SPC (actually handles the full range of standard 6.5 bullets, from 70 grains to 156, but let's say a standard military loading would be a 125- or 130-grain bullet). Shoots flatter and with less wind-drift than 5.56, 6.8, and 7.62. For you .308 fans, the 6.5 Grendel shoots a 144-grain FMJBT flatter and with less drift than M80 and its 147-grain FMJ. The same thing, only better?
I'd feel very confident with an 6.5 Grendel XCR at any conceivable engagement range, against a wide variety of armored and unarmored opponents, both in the open and behind cover.
