The Hobby Vs. Proficiency thread got me thinking about different approaches to and philosophies on shooting as an activity. Rather than hijack that thread, I'd figure I'd start my own.
What kind of shooting are you into and what are your goals as a shooter? Being honest, how do you rate your skill level and of what real world applications do you feel you are capable.
I'm not a competition guy, but I do shoot more than the people who shoot once a year to check the zeros on their deer rifles. What limits me right now is the cost of gas to get to a place to shoot as well as the cost of ammo. When I lived in Vermont where there always seemed to be a range right around the corner, I made at least one trip a week to the range. Now I'm lucky to make it once or twice a month.
I'm still a decent shot with a long gun and can hit a stationary, deer vital sized target from any position out to about 65 yards. After that, I unfortunately need a rest to hit much of anything.
I'm an abysmal handgun shot and have actually put that on hold until I can devote the proper amount of time and ammo money to it.
What I'm capable of: Most types of large and small game hunting at woods distances, but I would probably pass on a moving deer. There are too many potential variables for me to predict my SD and HD capabilities. I might be ok against the average, drug addled home invader, but definitely not against a special ops guy turned hit man. My practice sessions definitely focus on having fun and being an adequate hunting shot.
As far as goals are concerned, I want to improve my offhand shooting ability out to 100 yards and a little beyond. I'd also like to to practice on moving targets with a rifle, but I'm not sure how to do that.
How about everyone else?
