The Hobby Vs. Proficiency thread got me thinking about different approaches to and philosophies on shooting as an activity. Rather than hijack that thread, I'd figure I'd start my own.

What kind of shooting are you into and what are your goals as a shooter? Being honest, how do you rate your skill level and of what real world applications do you feel you are capable.

I'm not a competition guy, but I do shoot more than the people who shoot once a year to check the zeros on their deer rifles. What limits me right now is the cost of gas to get to a place to shoot as well as the cost of ammo. When I lived in Vermont where there always seemed to be a range right around the corner, I made at least one trip a week to the range. Now I'm lucky to make it once or twice a month.

I'm still a decent shot with a long gun and can hit a stationary, deer vital sized target from any position out to about 65 yards. After that, I unfortunately need a rest to hit much of anything.

I'm an abysmal handgun shot and have actually put that on hold until I can devote the proper amount of time and ammo money to it.

What I'm capable of: Most types of large and small game hunting at woods distances, but I would probably pass on a moving deer. There are too many potential variables for me to predict my SD and HD capabilities. I might be ok against the average, drug addled home invader, but definitely not against a special ops guy turned hit man. My practice sessions definitely focus on having fun and being an adequate hunting shot.

As far as goals are concerned, I want to improve my offhand shooting ability out to 100 yards and a little beyond. I'd also like to to practice on moving targets with a rifle, but I'm not sure how to do that.

How about everyone else?

dry-firing is your friend. when i haven't been shooting for a while, or just get bored in front of the tv, i unload a weapon and dry-fire. cheap and fun.

With a pistol I am average. I can hit what I need to at any normal pistol range.

With a rifle, AR is my favorite, anything inside of 600y is mine. I may not be the fastest guy at the match but I pretty much hit everything I am aiming at. Until the timer is running... Though this is not for groups. Just 8" steel plate.

Shotgun, doves fear my shadow.

I too love to dry fire while watching TV, be it pistol or rifle.

I go out shooting once a week. It's all for fun, nothing serious. Just punching paper, or messing with the chrony, etc.

I'm ok with a handgun. Ok as in I wish I was better. I hit what I'm aiming at inside 25 yards but I'm by no means fast. I'd have to spend a lot more time and effort with a handgun to get to a level I consider really good.

Shotguns I'm horrible with. I sucked from day one trying to shoot clays with friends and relatives so that killed my interest.

Pretty good with a rifle. Scoped or not. Spook a deer from cover and I'll drop him on the second jump.

Never done and type of competition. My ongoing goal is try and do more research and possibly get into a bit of that. Living in the middle of nowhere is not helping.

When my gear agrees with me I'm pretty good with a rifle out to 425, though I have made hits at 600 with a bolt gun, it took some figuring to get me there.

I have killed more antelope than I can count, but only a handful of doves. They are harder to hit than clays ;)

I'm a decent shot with a handgun, though I'm not doing IDPA like I used to.

I'm "not a competition guy" either, but I've long had an itch to become one.

It may answer the question my own current philosophy asks: if "my gun is more accurate than I am" (which is something you hear folks say, including myself), then why?

There's a lot of "variables" involved with that question; and lot's of fun I'll hopefully have answering it! I never hope the need arises for "SD and HD capabilities", but I will always try to engage in as many other "real world applications" that enable me to be "capable".

I'm really pretty good with many long guns. Handguns, if I leave the caffiene at home, I'm adequate ;) What I strive for most with any of them is to be faster.
