Below is my 3yr olds 1/2 American Bulldog, 1/4 pitbul, and 1/4 blackmouth cur. Bandit is five months old and already looking out for his kid.

I also have a catahoula male named "Thrash", he comes in tactical black.:D

Bandit is pretty laid back, you have to invade the house or threaten to to get him upset. Thrash would just as soon rip the face off everyone he doesn't know, he is only a pup, 5 months old. I got them to replace two Dogo Argentino I had, 120lb white dogs that look like Pits on steroids. I've also got a blue heeler that used to be the dog for watching the house, age has made her lazy. Plus I have a 20lb mutt named tugger who thinks he weighs 200lbs and can kill anything.

Bandit is bonding with Maggie in the pic below, nothing like the bond between a girl and her bulldog. He'll weigh in at about 70lbs full grown, Thrash ought to weigh right at 90lbs. I'm contemplating another dog but can't decide on whether to go with a Shepard or another Catahoula.

What do you folks have at home canine wise?

Home Defense, Home Alarm, House clearer......

I have a 130 pound male Rottweiler that is also tactical black. He also doesn't bark; he is suppressed. He is getting a little long in the tooth, but he is still king of this house.
I once came home from work and found that my back, sliding glass door had been jimmyed open. About two feet inside the door was a pool of blood that was two feet in diameter. Nothing missing except the source of the blood. I got to thinking, if you have a dog like that coming at you, the first thing you are going to do is run. That reaction would take a fraction of a second. In that amount of time, this guy bled out a two foot pool of blood. Not good.........for him.
Another time I pulled in a parking lot and left my truck running. I live in the desert and had limo tinted windows. Some guy decided to break into my truck. If he could have seen in the windows he would have surely noticed that Boulderdash was lying on the front seat anxiously awaiting him getting in. I arrived back at the truck. The driver's side door was open with blood everywhere. Boulderdash was sleeping soundly.
My dog is known by hundreds of people. I took him to work everyday for about six months when I first got him. There are people that don't know my name, but know I am the owner of Boulderdash.
He is lying right next to my chair sleeping off a couple tacos.

I have two attack labs and an attack cat. The dogs are tactical black and the cat is cammied.

All three will repell borders with impact tail weapons, gooey slobber, and are trained in the art of jumping on people.

They also have a silent chemical weapon that need not be mentioned.

Seriously, the big one barks at whatever moves and is a good alarm for the house.

Abit OT, but fun.

My untactical Siberian Husky lives with my parents. Anytime she sees a stranger she runs up to them full speed and jumps on them...so she can lick their face. Pathetic I say! What do you guys recommend for a good guard dog that will be good around children? Also what books should I read about training a dog specifically for guard/family pet duty?

Daniel, do an internet search for the word, Schutzhund.
That is German for "protection dog". It is a sport in which you train your dog in tracking, obiedience, and protection work. Contrary to what most people think, a dog so trained is far safer than an un-trained dog. A Schutzhund dog will hold someone on your command, and it was bite on your command. Note the phrase, "...on your command".

I have two black ones, I do volunteer work for an animal Welfare society, and got both of them there.

First is Attie. Attie is black and extremely aggresive, attacking everything and everyone in reach. Attie was brought home as a present for my wife, and he is master of the house. Attie has two big drawbacks as a big caliber striking weapon, and that is that he is very small, and that he is a cat.

Then there is Otto. Otto was found in the desert attached to a wire and left to die a horrible death, without food or water in the middle of the summer. The animal society found him and tried to keep him alive, and called me when they could not find any home for a flea ridden scarred emaciated bag of bones, one day left before he would have been put to sleep. I took the small bag of bones home, and on the second day he even stood up. And then I saw for the first time that he is not the little bag of bones, but he is Dobermann sized. Otto is clearly a Dobermann/Labrador cross, and is one big black growling assault weapon, so much that he frequently assaults every single plant in my garden. Otto only barks when he is happy, but when he is angry there is a deep growl that goes through walls.

In Otto's case he had very few psychological scars, and the physical scars have almost all healed. And he is the one in this world from whom I learn the most. Patience, showing his love with no bounds, and protecting those you love at any cost. When I am at the animal welfare society and see these maltreated half dead animals, I always think how much more human they are, and how much more rights to life than those subhumans cutting/burning/sodomising/hitting the animals.

As soon as I get a bigger place (as in acreage) we intend to get an Anatolian Shepard, Great Pyrenees or Kuvask. Not available in Tactical black!

Sukoshi- Although still a puppy, no one makes it up to the third floor without me knowing. He will bark like there is no tomorrow. If you make it through the door, your shins are his. He is a miniature pinscher that thinks he is a doberman. Only he is 17lbs.

I've got a couple of Newfoundlands making very sure that the carpet doesn't get up and sneak away. Apparently it is a big job as they seem to have to do it for most of the day. Also a Shepherd mix that showed up one day and announced that he was home. They will all bark in a heroic fashion at the UPS & Airborne Express guys (they carry dog treats with them) but most everyone else gets a raised eyebrow from the shade under a tree. Oh well, at least they look intimidating  . However, the one time that they needed to come through they did in splendid fashion so there are no complaints from me.

My parents and I dont have any dogs, but my girlfriend has two German Shepards, one's ~90lb and the other's a tubby ~110lb (he's also pretty fluffy, so he looks very fat). The skinny one stands at the big front window and barks at anyone standing at the front door (he pees himself if actually confronted, so he's a big wuss), while the tubby one stands silently near the front door (out of sight of the windows) waiting to get a nice leg or arm to nibble on. The tubby one's never gotten anything to eat that way, the skinny one always scares people off.

This is Rebel. He's a 9 week old GSD who should top out at about 100 lbs in a year or so. His main purpose in life is going to be as a doorbell and protector of the wife, kids and house.

He's not exactly tactical in this pic, but hey, he's in training.

Duvy, the troll dog! 14 year old rastafarian Cockapoo that prefers to hang out under the porch and bark her head off when anyone she doesn't know comes anywhere near the house or even drives up the driveway (long uphill driveway). The only way she'd bite a person is if they were covered in bacon grease or mistaken for another dog. Sampson, the 15 year old golden, is an inside dog now and would trip anyone coming in the house. He still barks if anyone comes to the house unexpectedly and has alerted me by growling when the neighbors have come up to the porch in the dark.

The best "guard" dog I ever had was a Siberian Husky named Sheeba. She and an ancient lab were adopted by my landlady and Sheeba and Cinder decided that they liked living downstairs in the little apartment I rented. Cinder was just a big pile of wriggling love and would climb into anyones lap that came along. Sheeba understood short voice commands and picked up simple hand commands very fast. Worked from the leash the first time I put it on her. An exceptionally smart dog. She was friendly, but "proud" (only way to describe her) and would politely sit right behind or beside me or my landlady until introduced. She seemed to evaluate people before deciding. She'd give a single or double "woof" if someone approached the house and sit at the foot of the driveway or by my door. While I never had any indication that she would bite I had little doubt that she would if she thought there was a threat. One day I came home around twilight and the landlady and her new boyfriend (soon to be fiance and then husband) were in the hottub (hottub just outside my bedroom window facing the lake) and she tells me that an older truck went down the road towards the barn and didn't come back up. I said I'd check it out and headed for my door. The BF/FTB/HTB said that he had a .45 in his 'burban if I wanted it (we shot occasionally). I said thanks anyway and got the leash from the door and clipped Sheeba on lead while I stuck my BHP and flashlight in my belt. Swung round the house, through the lower yard to the barn and then headed up the little dead end road back towards the house when I heard a radio and spotted the tail end of a pickup sticking out of the gate pull in to the field. Sounded like boys n beer so I took Sheeba off the lead and softly told her to stay and crossed the fence into the field. I gave her the handsign to walk and she paced me as I walked up the fence row to the gate. Sure enough, 3 young fellas in a PU with beer and radio going. I walked up to the gate as Sheeba stood by the rear bumper. I called out, "Hey guys, private property. Ya'll wanna take the party somewhere else." Then the driver opened the door and started to get out starting to say something like, "What busine...". I just said one word "SHEEBA" and she let out a set of sharp commanding barks and that fella levatated back into the truck while looking at this huge grey thing with teeth, started the engine without stalling it, and spun gravel backing out into the road. Sheeba had loped up to me and we watched as they squeeled up the asphalt. She seemed very please with herself and I certainly was please with her. Great dog.

444- That is exactly the type of dog I'm looking for. Thanks for the suggestion!

My 125 lb bloodhound currently on loan with my brother-in-law. I miss my boy.:(

St Gunner,

From reading your other post about your area, another dog is a great idea.

I'd recommend a Rhodesian Ridgeback. An adult will go 70-120 lbs and were bred for homestead defense. They are very loyal and will bond intensly with the family. (I'd hate to see what would happen to anyone trying to attack my daughter, we can't even scold her without getting chuffed at.)

Our Ridgie, Charlie will bark if anyone or anything comes near the house. He's backed the police chief off of the front porch from inside the house before, very loud bark and lots of shiny white teeth!

Once we get moved to Texas we're hoping to find another Ridgie pup in rescue. My wife thinks if one is good, two would be better, (three would be even better, four would be......) I've stopped her at two dogs. We figure two large dogs should give most folks pause.

This is our black russian terrier. Very tactical... :p

He's with me at the office a lot and everybody's stress relief pet. He's very quiet everywhere but when there's a bump in the night the watch howl gives pajama wedgies for the entire county.

This is a very healthy breed, especially for its size - ours is by no means big at 55 kgs and 72 cm withers. The Red Army created it as a war dog but wound up with a watchdog instead... they mature very late and can't stand not being around their people, no kennel dogs. But they're quiet, black and very strong. And no weather beats them - right now it's a bit hot with 25-30 Celsius but that only lasts a few weeks here. In the winter it can get as much below zero and the dog won't come in to sleep, it prefers the snow...

Check out here and here.

Abby our 3 year old rescue. Near as anyone can tell. Part Beagle and White Sheppard.

And Emma (better know in these parts as Snarla) our Black Lab also about 2 years old.
Protecting the couch here.

We rescued Abby from a migrant worker farm, they would get all liquored up and shoot at her and chase her down while drunk in their pick ups.

Took us Three weeks to earn her trust, we were just going to take her to the pound to keep her from getting killed by those losers. She and Emma hit it of so well, she stayed. It took about 3K$ to get he fixed and treatments and medicine, but well worth every penny.

Talk about a dog that will do anything to protect you! She knows how good she has it, and NO ONE will come between her and us.

Jumping back in about rescue dogs.

These dogs are the best, they have lived a hard life and know what bad means. These dogs will bond to their new owners and stop at nothing to protect their new family.

Blue is a bit long in the tooth now, but she has saved me from a rattlesnake once. Sandy proved her worth just the other night. I came back from a fire (volle Fire Fighter), and the sound of my key going into the lock lit her up at the other end of the house. We live wayyyy out in the country, so this was a great comfort to us. Blue is a Husky/Lab/Who Knows, about 90 lbs. Sandy is a Blonde part ridgeback/who knows, 60 lbs.
Both are from the Humane Society, the best place to get pets! Treat them right, and any breed will protect and defend.

I have a 4yr old 20lb beagle that thinks that rabbits and squirrels are the most evil thing on the planet, and rids them from the yard at every oprotunity. Does some strange and cute things, too. She has 2 large bay windows she hangs out in at the front of the house, and barks at anything she doesnt recognize. Unfortunately, she loves all man and I dont think she would make a very good attack dog unless they were coated in cheese. Then she would tackle them and augment gravity (200lb beagle, anyone?) caving in their chest;) . Also, she knows she is the queen of the house. She also knows that she is the cutest thing on the planet, as well as knowing she is a people.

Odd how she is a 4 year old dog, gets treated not only like a puppy but as a baby as well (read cradle-carry like a baby) by the whole family. Seems like the training has gone the wrong way...:scrutiny:

I will have to post pics of Her Royal Cuteness:p later.

Have three, two big, one little, plus a cat.

Samson - is a 5 y/o 45lb. German Shepherd/takeyerpick mix, one of the prettiest mutts I have ever seen, buff long hair with a black mask. Serves as my early warning system because he barks if the wind blows funny and chewing on any forearm available is one of this favorite games.

Sera - is a 4 y/o 60lb. (kinda small) German Shepherd, she was the runt of the litter, but I wouldn't take anything for her. She is much more laid back than Sam, but when she barks my wife and I pay attention b/c there is almost always something there. I don't believe she would ever put her mouth on anyone, but if you didn't REALLY know her you would never believe that. When she barks, all of her teeth show......

Spanky - 8? y/o, 15 lb soaking wet, poodle/wirehaired terrier/min. schnauzer (maybe?) mix, thinks he is 115 lbs. He was inherited when both of my grandparents passed away. Has hourly spats with.......

Priscilla - a 6lb. 1y/o grey tabby/white cat whose primary purposes in life are to terrorize Spanky and get knocked up. Gonna "fix" that last one tomorrow.......:)

The sad thing is they run the house, sleep on the bed, take up all of the leftover space on the couch, and eat better than we do, but I wouldn't trade them for anyhing.
