Your thoughts on the CZ-82

For the money they're good guns. Not to parrot what others have said, but the downside does seem to be the painted on finish. I figured if it ever gets too bad off though I'll just pay to have it striped and reblued. Another downside IMHO is the grips. They are a bit thick for my hands, but that's just personal preference.

Interesting to note: the black leather holster shown in Fascast's picture didn't come with mine (which I'm pretty sure I ordered from AIM Surplus). I instead got a brown leather flap holster that was a bit large and had a separate pocket for the the magazine. I ended up just buying one of the black leather strap holsters later from CDNN (which I think was only like $12 for "excellent" quality, which it was, and the "good" quality ones they had for about $6 or so). Both are nice to have, but for open carry I'd prefer the black strap one. Only complaint is that I think mine was unissued, and it's really not broken in yet, so the pistol is currently a very tight fit.

All in all, WELL worth the price these are going for. I think all people new to guns go through a phase where they always want brand new. My first few were all brand new too. After you wear through that phase though, you see that used guns - particularly surplus guns when they're available - are often a MUCH better value for your money. I can't fathom why anyone would be spending the same amount of money on borderline junk-guns in this price range for new, when an all-steel military grade CZ is available for the same price.

Since we're all posting photos, here's my set. Both the brown flap and black holster shown.

I have two CZ82's and I can't say enough good things about them. They're tough, reliable and deadly accurate.

I only wish there was a better selection of ammo for them.

Dang! The secret's out of the bag!

Also, I have found the Wal-Mart $6.00 holster with mag pouch to be extremely suitable for the range.

Lol - when I qualified for my CCW I used my SIG P6. It came with a nice leather duty holster too, but I wasn't able to find it when I was packing up for class. Ended up taking one of those same $6 Wal-mart air-pistol holsters there too. Fit and worked just fine. I don't like to carry it around a whole lot, but in a pinch it seems like just about every mid-to-small sized pistol will slide into that thing :).

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm going to look for one at a gun show this weekend. If I can't find one there, I'll be ordering one Saturday afternoon.

Good (bad) to see that others have experienced problems with the mag release as well. I shot mine today for the first time and started experiencing problems with the left button only 3 mags in.

Another problem seems to be with the slide stop spring falling out. When I got home I took the trigger guard off to see if I could clean up the mag release, and low and behold the little spring must have seen its chance and made a break for it. Thirty minutes of scanning the carpeting and another fifteen fiddling to get it back in place leaves me a little worried that I'll loose it again, next time not being able to find it.

That being said, I punched a nice three inch hole in my target at 12 yards, and believe me I'm far and away from being a decent shot with pistols.

When carrying a round in the chamber and the hammer down, what does the safety block? the firing pin or the sear?

Also, when carrying cocked and locked what does the thumb safety block? the hammer or the sear or the firing pin?

I'm curious which mode is safer against an accidental drop such as when the gun falls right onto the hammer.

Thanks!

There is nothing anywhere near the price of a CZ82 that will get you all that you are getting--no need for me to go into detail about what the others have said, other than to concur.

You have to go up to about $325 to get a used Sig P6 or S&W5906 (or '04 or '03) to get the same quality and general performance. In other words, you will have to double the price. But even then, there is a good chance that you will still get a substantially better trigger on the '82.

As others said, not a bad carry pistol either. With a few tweaks you get it to 15+1 rounds. It's .82" across the slide, and about 1.05" across the handle. But it is a whopping 28 oz of steel though.

Don't worry about the finish. They are easy to refinish, either by paint or $10 cold blue (see below). Including new grips, bluing, and new mag plates, I am still right around $200 for the total project.

Nice! I have one at my gunshop I've been eying, along with a FEG P9, but I haven't heard much about either. Some of those Com-Bloc pistols seem to be pretty nice.

really the only down side I see to the gun is the ammo is hard to find but you can get some great bulk deals online and for 150-199 dollars sure seems like a good buy.

9x18 is hard to find? uh, not on this planet. it's available anywhere online, for less than 9mm luger. it's also available at just about any gun shop. about the only place you can't find 9x18 is walmart.

While I can find 9x18 ammo in most local gun stores, it's a LOT more expensive than 9x19 ammo. It is fairly inexpensive online, if you don't mind ordering in bulk.

I like my CZ-82. I had a Bulgarian Mak and it was a good gun too. No need to argue over which is better.

Don Hume makes a good, inexpensive holster that works well. It's the J.I.T. Slide model, number K-40. It's for a Kahr 40, but is a perfect fit for a CZ-82.

OK, I'll bite. How do you get 15 rounds in a 12 round mag?

Folks on the CZ forum had luck with trimming down the follower for 1-2 more rounds. Also, the Mec-Gar +2 mag extension fits on the '82 mags.
