Is there anyway to date a Yugo M48 Mauser?

I have a book "Serbian and Yuogslav Mauser Rifles"by Branko Bogdanovic.It should be able to tell you anything about them.Mine however is a "BO"witch means unmarked.Does yours have the crest on the receiver?mine has no markings except the serial# on the end of the barrel.send me the serial# and I will look it up for you.Beak

I might have to get back to you in the morning.look under the bolt handle too there should be some marks on the flat side and if the magazine floor plate is flat or not.

According to my book they were made from 1952 thru 1957.1952 there were problems with the metals.Rifle Production-1952=94,476,1953 due to finding and fixing the problem there were only 4,618 made then they made 93,091 that they called the M-48A in 1954 M-48A=103,232,1955 M48A=103,474,1956 they made 40,036 M-48a's.In 1957 came the M-48B of witch 351,464 were made along with The BO that they produced 386,022 for export according to the book I am looking at right now.You are more then able to buy the book on-line as I did.you can look it up or E-mail to [email protected] dis-respect meant.

M48 production started in 1950 with about 53K built. In 51 it was 91K and 52 saw 94K built. The M48A started in 1953, followed by the M48B (still marked M48A) and last the M48BO, BO is an abbreviation for "bez oznake" which means "unmarked".

This info is from Bogdanovic's book. There is a considerable amount of incorrect info posted on different web sites about the Yugo bolt guns. The Bogdanovic book is considered the bible by collectors.

Beak50, what book did you get that info from? If you have the Bogdanovic book check page 150 and the "rifle production" chart. It shows dates and numbers for the M48. Page 166 starts the M48 chapter.

I have to check mine on the serial no. Its a M48 A with very nice hardwood stock. Its somewhat brown in color and not the orangy one.

The joys of cosmoline. My M48BO is also brownish in stock color instead of one of the lighter shades, it all depends on how long its been stored for and if someone prettied up the stock beforehand. Still a beautiful weapon!

I bought mine by accident at a pawnshop in 2003. Got it for $130 otd. The one thing that attract me was the nice dense hardwood stock. All the sights were aligned and had some cosmo in the bolt . But the rifle was definitely was shot and left dirty. THe bore had some rust when i cleaned it. I then used JB bore paste and work on it . It came out shiny like new. I shot it and got it hot and did the JB paste again. Lately i used Barnes Copper Solvent solution and the patch came out really greenish. Im glad this product works very well. Accuracy has been really good , a good clean barrel goes a long way.

I missed 1951 it is on page 170 I went by the production table on page 171.Sorry I didn't pay close enough attention my fault.on page 167 it say's they made 52,002 of them in 1950 but wasn't on the chart I was going by on 171.I wasn't including converted K-98.But your right about page 150.I just went to chapter 8 but didn't notice or pay attention to the bottom of 170.
