Anyone have a good solution for mounting optics on a Yugo M70B1 rifle? I want to put a red dot on it but I'm not sure how to get one mounted on it. Are there milled receiver cover replacements available that have rails on them?

I don't want to spend a lot of money and I just want a quick and easy solution and figured someone on this forum has a good setup.

Thanks

Somebody makes a mount that bolts on between your pistol grip and the receiver bottom. It works just like the side rail mount the Russians use, except for the way it mounts to the rifle.

I just can't remember the name of it or where it's sold.

This is likely the scope system that nalioth is thinking of:

There's also ScoutScopes, which replace the rear sight & would also allow you to place an inexpensive red dot sight: http://www.scoutscopes.com/

I haven't used either of these, but have used the Kobra Russian red dot sight that requires a side rail, which I'm not sure the M70 has. Whatever you decide, I'd steer clear of the top cover mounts - they're seldom stable enough to be of any use.

I like the Scout Scope mount, I'd be interested to know if anyone has had any experience with it.

I don't care to replace the receiver cover if I can help it, I've heard mixed things about them also and I'd rather have something that mounts forward of the receiver anyway. Although the side mount system that nalioth pointed out is pretty interesting also.

Thanks for the suggestions, keep em coming if you have any to add:)

Ok...
On the Yugo fixed stock you can add a side rail and then an optic. Thats one way to go .....or you can get the Utilmak.
When you use the Scout Scope you give up the rear sight on the Yugo.
All that said... I like the Yugo (I have an underfolder) as is.
My 2 cents.

Does your rifle have the folding grenade leaf sight that many guns built on Yugoslavian kits have? If so, it might interfere with a quad rail handguard or an Ultimak mount.

I'd recommend the UTG quad rail if you just want to experiment with the red dot sight. Not as nice as the Ultimak overall, but it retails for less than a hundred bucks. If you don't like the setup, you're not out much.

UTG is made in China, but I think the Chinese probably have a handle on making stuff for the AK. :D

Nightcrawler, the Ultimak made for the Yugo is made to allow the grenade sight to fold normally, the UTG quad rail is #1 a full 1 inch to short, the upper rail would need to be cut short and the Yugo barrel is thicker requiring ya to mill out the inside of the lower HG even after ya have fabricated spacers to account for that 1" length difference..

You can get a side rail on the cheap by ordering from Tickbit supply the UTG Copy of the Russian MTK02 for $9.99 its actually made better than the original, you can either rivet it on or drill and tap the holes for screws and install button head allen screws from the inside of the receiver, how long it take to install depends on how long it takes you to drill 3 holes..

its cutout for trigger and hammer axis pins so positioning is a no brainer, lay the rail on the side of the receiver, measure from the top rail on the receiver to the top of the side rail (NOT the backing flange but the rail itself) get both ends level and mark your holes, you can actually get by with just the two end holes, now drill your holes and install the screws, I'm setup for riveting guns together so rivet mounting the rail is my preference but no real difference if the screws are lot tited....

Thats the correct way to add an optic to an AK, plus if ya get extra side mounts (get the low profile Russian with weaver rail) you can setup and sight in each optic ie; a red dot on one a low power fixed magnification scope on another and a variable high power on yet a third all will swap in under 2 seconds and hold perfect zero......... can't do that with a scout mounted optic,

Anyhow I just got home and needa get settled in someone just e-mailed me this so figured would get it answered Nalioth or someone can give ya the links for tickbit supply and Kalinka optics Tantal source for rails already setup as screw mountable (more expensive) etc.... I needa get a water line fixed that froze while I was away.......

nalioth..isn't that a poor excuse for a rear sight? On my Ak I like and use the adjustable rear sight alot. The Scout Scope rear sight is useless.
You can add a side rail to any Ak, thats correct but with an underfolder you would give up the ability to fold the stock. The added rail is to big.

loosehorse, ya can still fold it but the optic has to be removed first, However the OP is talking about an AB1 which is a fixed stock so its a non issue.

If ya want to be able to leave the optic mounted on an underfolder while its folded you will need one of the offset rails from the link posted to PA Distributing, it offsets the rail higher up, I have the MTK 02 Rail installed on several UFs its not even the slightest problem to fold the stock even with 1/8" paracord wrapped around the left stock arm.

There are some countries who designed their underfolding stock to fold over a side rail mount. I can't think of which country atm, though.

Yes, I know. You can't fold it with a scope attached.

The folding stocks are not meant to be folded in combat, just while you're in the truck/airplane/ship getting there.

As far as the scoutscopes sight not being adjustable...

1) its primary purpose is a scope mount
2) I expect if you adjust it for 'battle sight zero', it'd work just fine when or if your optics take a dump.
