Im wonderin if the stuff we use at work called ZEP Zepreserve rust inhibitor would make a good gun oil. We spray it on our bare metal parts or iron castes parts to keep them from rusting im not sure if the storage parts have been sprayed with them too but theres no rust on metal parts we make that has sat on the shelves for months.
Another thing whats the difference between hoppes 9 gun solvent and hoppes 9 gun cleaner or whatever it says, found 2 bottles at the store both says hoppes 9 ones a bigger container ones smaller one says solvent one doesnt but both say its for cleaning guns i think one has the word barrel on it

From the ZEP Zepreserve MSDS:
LIGHT ALIPHATIC NAPHTHA; solvent naphtha (petroleum), medium aliphatics;
light aromatic naphtha 40 - 50%
PARAFFIN OIL; blend of heavy and light naphthenic petroleum distillate 20 - 30%.
HYDROTREATED LIGHT PETROLEUM DISTILLATES; paraffinic, naphthenic solvent 64742-47-8 10 - 20%
DIETHYLENE GLYCOL MONOBUTYL ETHER; 2-(2-butoxyethoxy)-ethanol; butyl carbitol 112-34-5 <10%.
2-ETHYL HEXYL ALCOHOL; 2-ethyl-1-hexanol; 2-ethylhexanol 104-76-7 <10%.

So who knows??

Does it keep your cast iron parts from rusting??

I'm not familiar with the product, but it sounds like one of those products like cosmoline that harden to a waxy coating.

Our cast iron parts as soon as it gets washed through the parts washer within 5 mins it will rust 20 mins and we have a bad part, it rusts in the washer if the dryer time is set too long.
It leaves a thin oil layer i guess it loosens up grime too, we have shelved cast iron parts with dust so thats an idea how long they have sat some may have rusted most havnt maybe rusty ones were not sprayed well. I guess i can try my only fear is hearing that its a good penetrating liquid so my fear is the gun parts loosening up coming un done and such or maybe its not a good rust prevenative for firearms at all for some reason

ran some zep through my 22lr seems like both a good oil and solvent I sprayed some in the action and already gunk started loosening up it sure definatley got some gunk out of the barrel too Ill keep trying it lets see how good it is for firearms
another thing is unlike rem oil and gun solvents that come in sompressed metal cans it stays on the cloth like water were as the stuff I use all the time as soon as it sprays out it already starts to evaaporate

I've got an older Remington rifle, model #33, it appeared it hadn't been cleaned since it left the factory in the 30's. I pulled the bolt, disassembled it, sprayed it down with carburetor cleaner, the muck and junk leapt off of it! I also sprayed the breech and bore with the cleaner, need I say it was spotless when finished. Then I took bore brush and cleaned the rifling, then oiled everything with Rem oil, the bore also. This is one of the best .22 rifles I own, superb accuracy too. Don't make it an all day chore, put oil on it soon after you're through cleaning it, to keep rust at bay. Make sure you get the NON chlorinated cleaner too !!

We used to use it in the shop. It is a decent rust preventitive and an excellent lubricant for actions that dont require grease. Works well with the likes of shotguns and .22 rifles both auto loading and bolt or pump. I wouldnt recommend it for heavy duty semi autos like an M1A or garand for lubricating, but good for rust prevention. Smells good too.
