Zumbo: Gun rag writer trashes "Assault Weapons"

I want to start off by saying I don't hunt. I really don't give a monkeys butt about hunting, but I have always defended hunters. I hate the "only sporting arms should be allowed, I think they should ban guns that I don't like to hunt with" mentality. And it certainly seems like Zumbo has that mentality. However, in his entry, he didn't once say that there should be a ban on ar-15s or any other rifle. He said that hunters shouldn't use those rifles because they look scary and might make hunters look bad. I think it's a stupid sentiment, but I think it is important to make the distinction.

Sam I think the big problem was his assertion that the AR15 is a 'terrorist rifle'.

I own an AR. I am NOT a terrorist.

You're wrong, that's exactly what he said...

"Let's divorce ourselves from them. I say game departments should ban them from the praries and woods."

"Let's divorce ourselves from them. I say game departments should ban them from the praries and woods."

Translation: "Let's throw the black gunners under the bus, so that the antis will let us keep our pure, honest hunting rifles."

(Until your hunting rifle is banned as a terrorist sniper rifle.)

What a moron.

Let's see... A lot of black powder weapons are descended from military weaponry... as are bows...

IIRC, the Winchester 1894 in .30-30 was actually issued to US troops for a period. I _know_ that the 1873 version, in various chamberings, was.

Then there's the 1903... The bolt action.

And the Mauser...

Then came WWII... The first large-scale use of semi-automatic weapons. I really like the feel and ergonomics of my M1 Garand.

In the late forties, the small-cartridge automatic rifle (also available in semi-automatic form) started to appear. Then in the fifties, Eugene Stoner and Armalite developed the AR-15, and since the early/mid sixties, it's been a US military weapon.

I love history.

Freedom means having the right to say what we like, and the responsibility to live with the consequesnces.

I agree with that. I was a little disturbed at posts calling for the guy to be fired without pointing out why he should be fired. If he wants to say he doesn't like to use ARs, fine, more power to him. If he wants to make incorrect, insulting characterizations about rifle owners (of which I am one) and spout ignorance on a topic he himself admits he knows nothing about, I classify that as incompetence and grounds for dismissal for a writer in a gun/hunting rag.

I think we can all quit calling for him to get fired. It's gonna happen. At any rate, after this, he's done.

Pretty sad, overall, but he does reflect the opinions of a LOT of hunters. Even people who are members at my club.

The thing is, he ignorantly buys into the anti's line about semi-autos with pistol grips as being evil, or more deadly, or "spray form the hip" type firearms. All ignorant ideas, things that have been reinforced through the years by the media, and even by us by continuing to call them assault weapons. (I like the idea posted earlier about taking them back and calling them Homeland Defense Rifles, I try never to use the term assault rifle any more). He basically is spouting out Brady drivel.

The "assault weapon ban", even though it has sunset, is still hurting us. It hurt us more than we ever thought, by making people (albeit ignorant people) believe that certain firearms are inherently more evil or deadly than others, and that banning whole classes of guns is good and acceptable (even when those bans, when critically examined, make no sense or accomplish nothing).

"But let one gun-rag-writer get stupid for a few minutes, and y'all are _all_ over that. I wish I could get this kind of effort out of you the next time some politician tries to climb to office over the corpses of the defenseless."

Here is the difference; who would we write to let know about Carolyn McCarthy's lies about the Utah shooter? Do you think the mainstream media would broadcast the opinion of gun nuts? Does writing to your senator "really" help; not me in CA; Fienswein and Boxer could care less that I support the 2nd. However, with Dim Dumbo, we could effectively retaliate, and we did. Good job gun owners!

This thread started with a link to the rather short and thoroughly offensive article - one click takes you to a mere 19 short sentences, half of which are plainly offensive. That's enough referencing.

But if it needs recapping: he basically said in no uncertain terms that not only are AK and AR type rifles not suitable for hunting, hunters should ostracize as "terrorists" anyone who owns one.

As for whether people are being too hard on him: re-read what he wrote - he basically says anyone with an AR or AK should be 'fired' from the hunting community. Give it, get it.

We are in the process of compiling a list of newspaper and television contacts - not just the "editorial" pages, but the "breaking news tip" sort of stuff. This will be available shortly. As it was, we gathered a lot of this info over a 12-24 hour period during our initial mail campaign, but I guess a lot of folks ignored it.

Your congresscritters aren't really the important ones today - it's the media gatekeepers who essentially shape public opinion.

And guys, look at the bright side...

The Dayton 500 was today. Drive fast, turn left, all that crap.

Britney shaved her head and got some ink.

The dead stripper addict's babydaddy position is still up for grabs.

It ain't a slow news week.

Good to have you on our side, bogie - I'll gladly send letters, but without your help I wouldn't know where to start

60 MPH winds........

I think ol Zumbo will wish he was back getting battered by those 60 MPH winds along about tomorrow. And who in the heck hunts coyotes in 60 MPH winds anyway. Jeezs, you’d need an assault rifle !!

I hope I don't see a teary eyed apology and commitment to some kind of common sense rehabilitation center with the hope that all will be forgiven.

From GlockTalk: Remington severs ties with Zumbo
As an owner of an EBS (Evil Black Shotgun = 870P),
I'm encouraged by the corporate response.

Jim Zumbo, Outdoor Life columnist thinks ARs are terrorist weapons.

He's all for banning them.

Some firearms enthusiast there, Jimbo! Of course, you HUNTING rifles won't ever be banned, so YOU don't have to sweat it!

Interesting that in his apology Mr. Zumbo brings up his support of the troops and his flying of the flag as proof of his patriotism.

Without making the connection that the flag is defended by troops carrying "terrorist rifles". I'm not at all impressed with his apology.

Some people say why can't we do this politically ? Well remember we did , think of all those congress critters that were kicked out of congress for voting for the original AWB . Believe me they do remember it and look how much public support is showing up for this new one they introduced last week , heck even Hillbillary won't comment on it or touch it with Bill's ...er ... ummmmm ... cigar , you get my point .

Dear Sir or Madam:

It has come to my attention that the commercial writer Jim Zumbo you financially support or sponsor has written highly offensive comments on the "Outdoor Life" site:

http://outdoorlife.blogs.com/zumbo/2007/02/assault_rifles_.html

Mr. Zumbo clearly labels certain kinds of rifles that I happen to own "terrorist rifles." I can only conclude that he thinks I am a terrorist as well. Mr. Zumbo issued an apology, but it did not retract these comments, so I do not accept this apology.

I find these comments so blatantly offensive that I must inform you that as long as you continue to sponsor or have a financial relationship with Mr. Zumbo, I will no longer purchase any of your products. Furthermore, I will make it a point over the coming weeks to inform all of my shooting, hunting and other interested parties of Mr. Zumbo's thoughts as well as your financial support for him.

Thank you. Sincerely,

:fire:

I am aware Remington has apparently stepped up to the plate, but until I see the official Press Release....

Well it sounds like his apology was a bunch of BS. I think that he just feels guilty and wants to keep his job.

I myself dont blame Remington right now. However if they allow him to continue on as their spokesperson I think we should boycott them.
