All i can tell you is, the 35 Rem. is a lot more gun than a 30-30 when it comes to how an animal acts when shot. BUT, the 30-30 will be cheaper to shoot...
Yeah. I don't reload. .30-30 is available everywhere and tends to be affordable, so it gets my vote. It also seems to be available in more rifles as well.
The .45/70 is really a reloader's cartridge. A lot of commercial ammo tends to be really wimpy so black powder guns don't blow up. With a modern rifle, it can be loaded surprisingly spicy.
However, the .45/70 is a big bore cartridge. If you are hunting humble white tails, other cartridges may be more appropriate.
Since bear and moose have entered the equation I would go for the .35. When dealing with relatively low velocity rounds more bullet weight is a good thing, IMO.
Having said that, there have been an awful lot of deer, elk, moose and bear killed with a 30-30.
Both rounds reload very easily and both are well suited for use with cast bullets, which I like a lot.
I own both and like both, but I voted .35 Rem. There is just something about the .35 that makes me pick it up over the 30/30 even though both are more than adequate for what I use them for.
The 35 Remington was nearly dead until it came out as a popular high powered single shot pistol round.
It is an old tried and true round, but so is the 30-30. People who use both will tell you that the 35 appears to hit much harder than the 30-30, but on paper the two rounds appear to be pretty close in power.
Where I live you see 35 Remington ammo all over the place. Lots of hunters around these parts. It is a fine elk, moose round, fine for deer.
Even though I reload, I would have to say 30-30, because the ammo is so plentiful! You can go just about anywhere and buy 30-30 ammo, and at a good cost! I bet for some of the prices you could buy a box of 30-30 ammo, it would almost not be worth reloading for it! Simply buy a number of different cartridges and try them all out at the 100 yard range and whatever the gun likes, stock up on just them!
