642 Club Part Three

As I mention a few days ago I been thinking of changing my 642 out for a slim 9mm like the new ruger lc9. went to the gun show yesterday with the intention of buying one. One of the vendors had some for $399.00 a little high but not too far out there. I handle it and it just did not feel the same way the 642 does in my hand. Decided to wait awhile after all it just 3 more rounds and been shooting the little mule for quite awhile and have gotten pretty good with it.

Took my 642-1 out to the range today for the first time. Shot 150 rounds of Blazer and UMC through it.

The recoil is heavy! A two handed grip in either stance was enough to spread the recoil between my two hands but one handed and off handed hurt a lot. I definitely want to try shooting with my left hand a lot more.

By the way I used an HKS loader with the Hogue Bantam grips. I like how they look but may consider the Stock S&W Uncle Mike grips. Does anybody prefer one over the other?

My little baby is dirty now so I have to giver her a bath and rub oil all over her.

...take a look at the "new" Kimber Solo. Nice looking. A few things I like, a few things I don't. Looks like the new girl is in town and a slobbering love affair is developing. :rolleyes: Price is in league with the PM9.

I don't think you could have selected a couple of more brutal rounds ta boot. Your 642 certainly survived the shock test.

Honestly though, my shoulder is more sore from all 12 gauge shells I put through my 870.

I switched to the Bantam grips. The difference between the two is probably minimal, but the Bantam's are a better fit for my hand and they just feel better to me. Of course, the recoil is still very stout, but that's just a staple of the 642 world.

Concerning 150 rounds on your first outing: I give you the 642 Club Salute! I did 100 rounds once and had a large blister to show for it.

Go for it.

Depending on how you plan to carry, the Bantams seem to be most popular for pocket carry in synthetics. If you are going to do IWB or OWB, you might want to try the Hogue Monogrips. They are under $20 and significantly change the J Frame shooting experience, for the better.
 
Wow. 150? I think I've shot that many through a model 10 in one sitting, and I know I've done it through a CZ75, but my 642? Um, maybe all of 50 a couple of times, usually less. :D Good on you, if your wrist can take it! And palm, too.

Shooting 158gr LHPSWC's in +P - from GA Arms - is much kinder to the wallet than shooting the Remington R38S12 variant. They chrono the same, either way. Shooting my 125gr JHP (Montana Gold bullets) homebrews is much more frugal - and fun. Sadly, in the last five months, I tripled my J-frame collection by adding a 3" 63 (.22LR) and a 3" 60 Pro. Shooting .38's in the latter is fun - except for the sighting problems - that little silver ring around the front sight's Tritium 'Night Sight' is hard to pick up in any light - and it's emission is very dim in no light - time for some orange paint. Interesting side note: While shooting the SPC targets, I was 5/5 with the 642 - 3-4 of 5 with the 60! The 60 has the better trigger - it's the sight!

Maybe the 642 just likes to show off? Oh, and before I'd have to shoot 150 +P's through my 642, I'd remind you of my being chronologically challenged, having CTS problems, or simply start cross-dressing. Of course, claiming I am on a fixed input could be claimed (I don't have the legs for a dress...)...

PS Shooting the SPC targets with the 3" 63, I am 8 for 8 - never miss. Of course, the so-called 'falling plates' just sit there - and giggle...
 
I put about 150 through the first time I shot mine too.

It's an easy mistake to make, because you don't really feel the pain until you pick up your breakfast fork the next day.

Hey - the 3" 63 has the HiViz 'searchlight' and wood stocks - and no recoil (.22LR). Plus - no timer or competition. I had it, the 60 Pro, and a 2 5/8" PC627 UDR. Ran out of ammo - except for the 642 and it's 5 rounds - beautiful day!

Oh... I aint from Alabama... I'm from Brooklyn, NY - I just have lived here, seemingly forever. And... I'm an Auburn grad ('75) as is my younger son, Denny Bob ('93... he got his B of CE @ 19!) - he was born in Birmingham. My older son, Andy, a pilot, was born in New London, CT (I was in the USN.). He is the gun nut - loves bottom feeders. He thinks the 642 is too big - and not enough, caliber-wise. He had a .380 AMT - now has a Taurus .45 - I tried to warn him - kids don't listen - even at 41! He couldn't tell I was 'packing' one day - I pulled the 296 from one pocket and the 642 from another - then three pocket knives. I'll convert him yet...

Today reminded me of a recent range trip. The fellow shooting 9mm at the adjacent SPC plates bragged that he had a better capacity... you know the story. I counted his plate hits - four - out of fifteen or more. I shot the 642 - 5/5 - then the PC627 UDR - 8/8 - and it was fast... Yeah, I get more chances out there - and I have shot for more years - and did I mention I was lucky?

longstanding line, "smoke'm if you got 'em".

I'm close to 'pulling the trigger' on a snubbie for CCW.

I'm really interested in the 642 and the LCR. I've handled both and really like them. Overall I like the classic lines and slightly smaller footprint of the 642. However, I really like the 'perceived' durability of the LCR's frame along with its pinned front sight.

My two concerns: Is the LCR going to be to chunky for pocket carry (Looking at getting the boot grip, not the larger tamer grip) and is the 642 more prone to peeling with its more delicate finish.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Have you considered the S&W BodyGuard as opposed to the Ruger? I can't speak to it, just asking.

It's a bit space age looking. I like the laser feature, I like the PVD coating on the stainless cylinder and stealth black and I really like the 14.3 ounce weight!! I don't know what else you could do for grips though? Could always add some grip strip for cushion and forming. Bud's has them in stock for $429 vs 361 for the 442/642. You could even change your user name to BGFIvE and start a wildly successful Bodyguard Thread. :D

If you are concerned with the 642 finish....a somewhat valid consideration which is solely aesthetic, you may want to do the 442 in basic black instead?

Just cant beat a j frame! Like my LCP, but when she jammed the other day on Hornady Critical Defense ammo, I shook my head, went back home and donned my 642. 5 for sure beats 7 maybes!
 
Nice Tomkatz. Makes me wish I would have purchased the 442 instead of the 642.


a just cause: I don't think you can go wrong with either the S&W or the Ruger LCR. I do think the LCR is a bit thicker but it is lighter. I was in the same situation as you. I went to 3 gunshops and for some reason all 3 sales associates had a J frame S&W in their pockets and they all recommended them over the Ruger even though the Ruger was pricier at all 3 places. Even after I purchased it I wasn't sure I made the right decision. It has been about 4 months and I LOVE the 642. Everytime I pick up an LCR I am glad I went with the 642 but this is just personal preference on feel and looks.
 
I put 40 rounds though my 442-1 this saturday. Standard Velocity 38spl 158g. It didn't seem so bad this time. I didn't shoot any 130g JHP +P this outing. I don't have many of those left.

I love this gun. It doesn't remind me I'm carrying a gun all day but I know I have one if I need it.
