I like to use my range's outdoor pistol and rifle ranges as much as possible in the nicer weather. Sadly, we have several anti-gun members and they run the whole spectrum, from off duty LE to hunters and .22 target shooters and anything in between. I collect original HK rifles and several friends of mine enjoy the same. One day in particular sticks with me since me and 2 friends were at the outdoor rifle range. We had my HK94, 91 and 93. My friends had a parts kit FAL, a parts kit 91 and 2 Bushmaster AR15's. We had been plinking for around 2hrs when a guy shows up and looks at us, mutters something about "The police should know what these damned criminals have up here" and then left.
About an hour later 2 other guys arrive and start to setup with a scoped bolt action rifle and a scoped Colt AR. They kept staring at us and one eventually comes over and asks "What dept are you with?". After we tell him none, he gets super annoyed and starts asking all kinds of questions about where we got our rifles and why would 3 guys "need" all that kind of "hardware". They were off-duty LE from a nearby dept. The guy actually said maybe he should have the locals "check us out". I politely advised him that we planned to be at the range for another couple hrs if the locals wanted to speak with us. He wasn't very happy but left us alone after that. Apparently he felt only the Police or Military had use for rifles like ours.
My best experience was just before this past Christmas when I was sighting in a new scope on my HK91. I had also brought my 94 to try some new magazines in it. A father and his son (about 10 or 12yrs old) arrived and were doing some target practice with a Ruger 10/22 and an old GI 1911. I'm booming away with the 91 when the dad walks over. He waits until I'm done and I'm thinking he's upset about the .308 noise, etc. Turns out his son was admiring the HK94 and he wanted to know if it was ok to come over and look at it. I showed them how it worked and let them put a 30rnd mag through it as well. The kid was sold on it after that.
