Beretta PX4 & Storm CX4 Combo or Ruger P9 & PC9 combo?

Considering a pistol/carbine combo set-up in 9mm with hi-cap mags, either:

Beretta PX4 pistol 9mm and Storm CX4 9mm carbine

or

Ruger P9 pistol 9mm and PC9 9mm carbine

Your thoughts as to which would make the preferred/better/more reliable set-up?
 
I don't know much about the PX-4 yet but I have a few 92's and a CX-4 that uses the 92's mags, it's a great combo IMO, the CX-4 just rocks, it's hard to get a smaller carbine, it's over am inch shorter than my M4 with the stock fully collapsed.

...my decision has been made. I visited the PDX gunshow today and couldn't help but walk out with a brand new CX4 Storm in 9mm. $575 out the door. Not a bad price... seems like a great gun. I'll pair it with my 9mm Hi-Power for now, even though the mags won't interchange (or will they?).

Next, I can't wait to see the new PX4 pistol. The best news is that in forty caliber, it will come with 14-round (extendable to 17-rounds) magazines which the CX4 Storm carbine can be adapted to accept. So when the PX4 comes out, I will probably buy one in forty caliber and also buy a forty caliber conversion barrel for my 9mm CX4... then the CX4 Storm will have a capacity of 17+1 rounds in forty caliber! Sweeeet! I think a CX4 and PX4, each with 17+1 capacity in forty caliber will make for a great SHTF combo.
 
I put 100 rounds through my new CX4 last night in my laundry room, 50 Win USA 115 gr. JHP and 50 Win 147 gr. TCMC, with about half being fired at a high rate of speed... I was mostly just interested in seeing how well the gun ran with a high rate of fire... it sped through it lickity split without a bobble of any kind.

As I broke the gun down and checked out the details of it I was very, very impressed. The design & engineering of the gun is amazing... truly a remarkably well thought out and executed gun. The break-down is mind-bogglingly simple, fast, and tool-less. The versatility of reversing all the controls from right to left or vice-versa is really cool. Now I want to buy a couple more barrels, one in .40 and one in .45 just to round things out.

The 15 round mags that came with the gun are Mec-Gar made Beretta mags, excellent quality. Sure is fun to blast through 15+1 rounds in a hot hurry - (good thing I reload!). I need to get some of the 20-rounders soon.

Looks like it could be another 6 months or so before the new PX4 is shipping to regular folks, so I'm in no hurry to jump on that. My new FN Hi-Power 9mm (bought from CDNN recently for $399) makes a great companion gun to the CX4.

I got a chance to check out the Ruger P9 at the gunshow yesterday and must confess I'd love to have one of those as well. I do prefer the more ttraditional looks of the Ruger and I know it's an exceptional gun, but the features and versatility of the Storm really won me over. Being the gun freak that I am, I think I'll probably also wind up with a Ruger P9 before too long... they're very nice indeed!

Now to figure out my accessorization of the Storm... I would like a nice reticle hologram scope, a Surefire combat light. I'm going to pass on the "post" front grip... I very much prefer the traditional feel of holding the forestock like a rifle. This is most certainly a fun rifle!

Anyone added additional barrels to their CX4 yet? Any idea on cost and availability?

I'd go for the Ruger combo.

The P95 and PC9 have a longer track record. The Beretta PX4 is too new to have any latent bugs worked out. You'll probably spend less money, to boot.

That's an interesting question. Would make sense, just as the .357 Mag lever carbines are among the most sensible pistol-caliber carbines. If you've got at least 16" of barrel to play with, might as well use a handgun round with a relatively rifle-ish ballistic profile, i.e., high charge-to-bullet-weight ratio.

More generally, I bet Beretta sells a whole lot of Storms to middle-class suburbanites post-Katrina.
 
Plainsman.... I get the impression that the Storm is selling very well. And with good reason. I'm extremely impressed with the engineering, innovation, wide range of feature options, and build quality of the CX4 carbine. As much as I like the Ruger P9/P40 carbines (and I may wind up with one of them just because they are a great, solid carbine) the Storm has taken the carbine huge leaps beyond what the Ruger offers.

As for a pistol/carbine combo... I do like the Ruger carbine a lot, but the Ruger pistol leaves me stone cold... I don't like it at all. While it may be reliable, it's clunky, bulky and doesn't feel good in my hand.

Today I picked up a pair of Beretta 20 round mags for the Storm and have a few 13-round Mec Gars for the Hi-Power. They make a great pair, even if the mags don't interchange.

When Beretta's new PX4 pistol becomes available, it may well become the partner to my Storm carbine... if it's anywhere near as well executed as the Storm carbine is, I'm sure it'll be a winner.
 
What are the highest capacity magazines one could score for the Storm carbine in .40 S&W? E.g., is there a nice big "trainer" mag for the .40 Beretta pistols, a la Glock, that one could use as a "stick mag" in the carbine?

'Cause that would be pretty neat.
 
When the PX4 comes out, there will be forty caliber mags of 14 round capacity which can be extended to 17 round capacity... that would give 17+1 in a forty caliber CX4 carbine... not bad!

Some CX4 owners have successfully used twenty and thirty round 9mm mags to feed forty caliber Storms... with a somewhat lower capacity in 40, of course.
 
The CX4 and PX4 mags are not interchangable though.

The CX4 mags are interchangable with the 92FS and the PX4 will have a new mag.
 
Wrong... the CX4 is adaptable to accept PX4 mags... Beretta was thinking ahead as a system here.

In fact, the CX4 is adaptable to accept 92 mags, 8000 mags, or PX4 mags, by use of sleeves inside the larger CX4 magwell. The CX4 has an extra large magwell which can accept sleeves to scale the cavity down to fit the PX4 mags, or smaller yet to fit 90 series and 8000 series mags. The sleeve in my CX4 is for 90 series mags, but at some point (perhaps now) sleeves will be available for PX4 mags.
 
Seems silly to take all the effort of carrying a rifle and ending up with something that shoots pistol rounds.
 
There are benefits of shooting pistol caliber carbines for close quarters work... the effectiveness of the pistol ammo is increased somewhat and it can be shared between your pistol and your carbine... they can even share the same magazines. It's a versatile set-up if you don't need nor want long range rifle capability. 180 gr. Gold Dots in forty caliber fired from a 16" carbine are a fairly potent brew for close quarters defense work. I much prefer pistol caliber carbines to rifles for CQB stuff myself and, obviously, so do a great many other people. It's a nice set-up for 3-gun matches as well and for use at indoor ranges where only pistol calibers are allowed.

Last month I was leaning toward the Ruger; great price, well made basic carbine, but I don't like the Ruger pistol.

This thread and your experience is nudging me in the direction of the Beretta. Although a die-hard 1911 fan I might even consider the PX4 pistol as you did.

Where in the Pac NW are you?? You had mentioned that you bought your gun at the PDX gun show.

Anyway I'm interested in your continued experiences with the Beretta PX4 and CX4 combo. I'm getting ready to buy, but still on the fence.

Your Laundry Room doubles as a gun range?! I'm gonna have to see some pics of that!

I would love to get a storm for my 96fs. I do like the idea of the PX4 pistol as well. Could have a few Beretta purchases in the future.

I also have mine set up to use the 33-round Sten mags going for $4 each too.

You can't beat an AR-15 for upgrades and mods!

With Beretta losing some important contracts in the past couple years, I'd be leery of going with the new Buck Rogers laser gun they've made. Don't see any street officers or SWAT guys with anything but AR-15s and shotguns BTW.

Ruger makes some fine pistols but I'm not convinced the PC9 is anything but an "okay" carbine. Has the fit and finish of a Saturday night special too.

Both will hammer you for hi caps too.

Heck if you like plastic, why not the Kel Tec 9mm handgun and their carbine - cheaper?

But again, I prefer Oly Arms because I can switch from a pistol caliber upper in 9mm, 40 SW, 357 sig, 10mm or 45 acp to 223 Rem. Versatile platform, not a pinned dedicated barrel as with the Ruger or the Beretta.
 
I've been able to find used police trade-in pc9s for $350 or so. I'm kind of invested in the ruger p-series, so logically I should get one, but that storm carbine is nice.
