I tilt the handgun slightly to the side when shooting one handed. No way I would ever shoot real gangsta style unless of course I get those homeboy night sights.
I took a class with Matt Burkett and he had us experiment with shooting the gun weak hand, strong hand, and free style from every angle including upside down in order to get a feel for how the gun handled. In competition it is frequently necessary to shoot at odd at odd angles while working around barricades and such. Never the full 90 degrees though (outside of Matt's class).
I had our club's 617 briefly sighted in for gangsta style, just for chuckles. I had no problem consistently hitting 3" square spinners and 25 yards with it.
There are valid reasons to shoot "gangsta style"...
I have never discharged a firearm in the irresponsible fashion that gang members and rappers portray in their videos, however, testing the action of some automatic pistols trying to induce malfunctions, and in some SD techniques there are valid reasons to have a firearm positioned in such a manner when firing...
Front and rear sight are usually aligned to the bore to compensate for the effect of gravity on the bullet. Holding sideways makes no sense, but then they are not aiming, are they? Just letting recoil carry the line of fire across the crowd on the corner. yuck
I've done it once just to see what it would do to the bullet trajectory. The bullet ended up going about 1ft the the left of what i was aiming at. I haven't don eit since though.
a cant and sideways like a idiot is two different things. After years in the military infantry, I am not sure my brain would allow my hand to even hold a handgun that way. lol
Ding! I expected to see this earlier than reply #100. Any gun I'm going to carry or not make a safe queen will get rung-out several times on the range after the first few hundred rounds. What's involved? I need to be convinced the hardware works reliably. It needs to function properly for rapid fire, double taps and yes, even rapid fire with rotation from "left gangsta to right gangsta" (with a big berm). One never knows what situation or angle you'll need if the time comes.
Laying on your side, on the ground, on one side of a car or bed and shooting at an attacker's feet or shins on the other side would probably involve "gangsta".
I've done it once or twice just for a laugh, I'd never consider it an effective means of shooting. What about shooting from the hip? Me and my dad had a little friendly competition with our 1911 where we would plant the gun at our hip basically and try to hit the target at about 8 yards? That count?
I can picture me, trying to be Mr. Cool, shooting my M4 sideways, only to have a burning-hot shell casing or two go down my shirt collar against my neck!
However, it might be a good thing to know. Let's say you are pinned behind a car - lying on the ground - and you can see the BG's feet, and you have a laser on your pistol, if you knew that it would fire in all different directions without jamming, you could confidently send a few bullets into the BG's ankles!
