IRAN HANGS SERIAL KILLER
An Iranian serial killer - dubbed the "vampire of the desert" - has been publicly flogged and hanged.
Thousands of people turned out in Pakdasht, south of Tehran, to watch Mohammed Bijeh die.
The 22-year-old had been convicted of kidnapping and murdering 21 people, most of them little boys.
He was lashed 100 times, stabbed by the brother of one victim before a blue nylon rope was placed around his neck by the mother of another murdered child.
Bijeh was then hoisted into the air by a crane and slowly throttled to death.
Hanging by a crane - a common form of execution in Iran - does not involve a swift death as the neck is not broken.
Bijeh and his accomplice, Ali Baghi, were arrested in September 2004.
Over a period of more than a year, they reportedly lured children into the desert before assaulting and killing them.
The pair reportedly stunned their victims with blows from a stone, sexually abused them and buried the bodies in shallow graves in the desert south of Tehran.
Both were initially sentenced to hang, but in January the Supreme Court ruled that Baghi should instead serve 15 years behind bars. Go to report
