Like the title says, I am moving from Florida to New Jersey. What do I do about my guns?

Can I take them with me? What do I do with them when I get to NJ?

I'm not sure what the NJ gun laws are so I am really just looking for advice into the process.

First, I would reconsider.

Second, if you do move, please become active in the RKBA movement here in NJ. It's not very large or powerful, but we need more voices to help us here. Too many give it up for lost and either move out of state, or don't even bother trying to make their voice heard.

So if you must come

I'm a transplant that wishes he'd gone elsewhere. But not that I'm here, I try to do what I can.

Give all your guns away, empty your wallet, cut off your balls and then you will be properly indoctrinated for life in NJ. :p

packing.org is good, also look at www.evannappen.com

He wrote the authoratative book on NJ gun law.

If you are moving in with your guns you should be ok transporting them locked, ammo separate as in any other state (keep in mind that as you travel up, in some states like Maryland, a loaded magazine, even separate from the gun = a loaded gun.)

You don't have to register them.

Some caveats, like anything with more than a 15 round capacity is illegal based on our own homegrown state AWB. No grandfathering. Hollow points are also illegal except under certain circumstances etc.

(Get the book!)

Also, the process going forward for you in NJ is you need to apply for a FID (firearms ID card) and depending on where you are that can take upwards of 6 months (liberal democratic counties closer to NYC = 6 months as you get out in the mountains, more conservative less hassle with guns, less permit time.)

(This is in spite of the fact that there are laws saying it can take no longer than 60 days I believe.)

The FID card entitles you to buy all the long guns and ammo you want. Handgun caliber ammo must be logged in a book but it is legal to buy over internet or mail order (no log there.)

Handguns require a pistol purchase permit. You are limited to one purchase per month. Permits are good for 90 days. In my town, we get them in two weeks (sussex county). Elsewhere it can take months and the local PD's can practice their own version of gun control by repeatedly losing your application and just giving you the run around. Keep your receipts and keep good documentation in general. Be persistent, they can't legally deny you.

Lots more info, as you have more questions, fire away.

Not a gun freindly state, if that's an important part of your lifestyle, consider moving to nearby Pennslyvania. Lot depends on where you will be working as commuting from PA to areas where most of the decent jobs are is not practical

Good Luck!

Move back. I just did (PA to NJ to PA). It's just not possible to live as an American there. Flame if you will, but it just isn't (for many reasons too tiring to mention here). The entire system is a horror although most are oblivious to it. The ONLY hope is if Bret Schundler becomes the next Governor and he'll have a very long and difficult road ahead and he knows it, but still moves forward. He's one of the best that America has to offer.

How does Doug Forrester stand on 2A issues?

I thought Schundler flopped on CCW, didn't he? I've been told that anyway.

Heed those warnings and here are a few more:

Traffic - the most populous state in the Union has increasingly worsening traffic problems. A 1.5 hour commute each way is not considered "long".

Taxes - high

Cost of Living - High you can fall into that 3% of Americans that Kerry calls rich and not be in NJ.

Auto insurance - high

State Government - CORRUPT AND LIBERAL

Anti-Gun

Anti-Hunter

Re Schundler - he is pro gun, looser laws and for concealed carry.

It doea remind me of the line from Passenger 57.

Sherrif "Well what would you do if you were me?"

Snipes "Kill myself."

Cheers,
Mike.

PS - Consider a move to Texas :)

Handguns require a pistol purchase permit. You are limited to one purchase per month.

This one is incorrect. You have to get a seperate permit for each handgun you want to buy, but the ONE gun control law that NJ does not have.....yet....is a 1 gun a month law. You may request as many handgun permits as you wish at one time, though they cost $2 a pop and must be used in 90 days. You can renew them for an additional 90 days but after 180 days they're done.

Ok let me clear some things up.

I was born and raised in NJ and lived there for 22 years before I moved to FL to go to school here. I finished up my degree and now I have lived here 1 year out of school.

I hate it here.

I will not pick a place to live based on its gun laws. I like guns, I like shooting, but it is not that important to me. I dont live and die over guns and gun laws. Yes the state has high property taxes but overall its not that bad. The schools and govt programs are a lot better in NJ than in FL. And just for the record, my car insurance is higher in FL than it was in NJ. Everyone gets all excited about FL not having income tax but they tax food and clothes and the food here is expensive! It all balances out.

Anyone live around Atlantic City? I grew up in that area. If you know NJ then you know that South Jersey is more conservative than North Jersey.

One of the reasons I am moving back is because I am interested in becoming a State Trooper.

Thanks to all for the information, it helped out a lot
:)

I live in Camden County about 45 minutes from Atlantic City. Yes South Jersey is a bit more conservative than North Jersey....but it still isn't all that great.

If you want to be a NJ State Trooper all I have to say is good luck. I hope you have some connections cause that's about the only way you can get a police job in this state. I'm getting out just for that specific reason. NJ is THE most crooked and corrupt state in the nation and I really don't see it changing anytime soon.

Again good luck....you'll need it. :banghead:

So you have to get an FID and apply for another permit to purchase handguns.

However, if you already own them, then you do not need a permit?

Just trying to understand whether or not I need to apply for a permit when I get there.

Actually, I do! :D

Handguns require a pistol purchase permit. You are limited to one purchase per month.

Unless something has changed recently, you can purchase all you want. For pistols just make sure you let "them" know you want MORE than 1 pistol permit when you apply for the permit(s)... (there is a little box near the top of the form where you can put in a number you are applying for)

P.S. I think it is $2 per permit...

WT,

That link is the Performance Objectives for municipal academies like the one I went through. 23 weeks of PT, and NJ redundant law. If he wants to be a Trooper they have their own academy with a whole different book of regs and PO's. As of right now 26 week LIVE IN academy mon-fri. It's one of the hardest in the country.

It's One Pistol PER PURCHASE PERMIT. You may get as many permits as you like, they expire in 90 days.

There is no requirement to register anything on the way in, and this serves you.

Do not bring anything NJ defines as an "Assault Weapon", as the NJ AW registry is CLOSED. Scrutinize the list: Old tubular mag .22lr autoloaders holding 17 rounds have been deemed AWs.

But to be BRUTALLY honest, you'll find that as soon as you become an NJ State Trooper, none of the laws will apply to you, and the courts will invent exemptions for you that weren't in the law. It happens regularly in that corrupt hellhole of a state.

Make no mistake about it - Bret Schundler understands Constitutional Rights. You must understand, too, if you're a NJ resident and plan on remaining so that campaigns are won and lost on the issues that are important to the constituents. What's important to me is irrelevant to others so a good candidate needs to understand this and conduct himself or herself accordingly.
The RKBA isn't even on the radar screen to many, but the related principles of personal responsibility, accountability and self reliance cross a much broader spectrum. Mr. Schundler really just didn't know how to handle the RKBA issue when he was attacked on it with Democrat guns ablaze. He'll do just fine next time. Be sure to support and not criticize him when he needs to play the game a bit. NJ ain't easy and he's a much better man than any of us.
If you're really serious then send money to www.bret2005.com . I have no connection to him, but him as Governor of NJ would be great for the entire country. I recently sent $50 and will probably send more.

One final perspective: The importance of Constitutional Rights, if you value them in the first place, becomes rediculously apparent when you have them, lose them and then get them back. Today marks the 3 week anniversary of moving back to PA from NJ and, although bitter-sweet in many ways, we couldn't be happier. The corrosive forces that took away Constitutional Rights in NJ are the same corrosive forces that are ruining the entire educational system there, create un-Godly tax structures and eliminate open space (not to mention corrupt to the core politics, etc).
It's very sad to have left so many good people behind, but I've got a family to raise. NJ, IMHO, isn't worth any career. It truly sucks in a very big way. It's a scourge on America. I was hoping that I'd be able to just let it all go, but I guess that our work is never done whenever there's injustice anywhere, especially right next door.

Then perhaps you are in the wrong forum.

So.......... you came to Florida to go to school?

Everyone gets all excited about FL not having income tax but they tax food and clothes and the food here is expensive! It all balances out.

Nonsense. A state income tax system invades your privacy by gathering more information about you, your sources of income and your spending and charitable giving, as well as "progressively" taxing some people more than others. It also taxes money you make through investments. A uniform sales tax simply places taxes on money you spend, not on what you earn through investments.

I was born and raised in NJ and ... I am moving back ...

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

:neener:

You can stop anywhere along I-95 in Virginia and settle. Our gun laws are fantastic compare to Jersey.
