Moving from FL to NJ...what do I do?

To Shootcraps

You can stop anywhere along I-95 in Virginia and settle. Our gun laws are fantastic compare to Jersey.

Am I correct in believing that Virginia imposes a "personal property tax" which includes a requirement that you report and pay a tax on the firearms you own?

Before you rush to say "no," I would suggest that the law is on the books, but is simply unknown and/or ignored by most people.

And, having lived there for several years, I agree that Virginia is a great place to live - particularly contrasted with New Jersey.

Then perhaps you are in the wrong forum.

So.......... you came to Florida to go to school?

I asked a question about what to do about the gun laws in NJ when I move. I did not ask for a bunch of opinions on different states and where to live. Some people have been kind enough to give me those facts without imposing their beliefs on me, and I thank them!

If you must know..........

I went to the University of Tampa because I had already completed my major at a state college in NJ (Stockton) and I wanted to get away for a couple of years. I got into shooting when I got here and I would like to continue no matter where I am. When I referred to schools I was talking about lower education, the school system for children from elementary through high school.

Also, I come to this form to strictly learn about guns. I like to read about guns, their functions and their accesories. I also come here to look in the classifieds for guns to purchase. I do not come here to debate politics or the gun laws. Some people concern themselves with things other than guns and the laws that apply to them, I am one of those people. I will never pick a place to live based on its gun laws, it is just not that important to me. I like guns, however, they are a very very small part of my life and scope of interests.

Again I want to thank all that helped me with useful information. :)

Anyone live around Atlantic City?
Isn't that the biggest pit south of Hoboken? The farm country in South Jersey looks nice, but AC?

You're sure you want to be a Trooper? Guns play a larger role in a Trooper's life, as opposed to most citizen's lives. And, you'd better like driving......

Didn't I just talk about such comments?

Please don't inform me about guns and cops, I have several in my family. I don't need to open up my life history here to get a simple answer to a question, do I?

HA! I'll introduce you to some Troopers and cops that I know. Half of em barely know the difference between a rifle and a pistol. In reality guns are a very small part of police work if you want it to be that way. On the other hand if you have an interest in guns they can be a very large part of police work. All how you want to do it. I think most can imagine which category I'd fall under. ;)

Kevin, where are you generally located in Camden Co.?

I grew up in Atlantic County, right by the Hamilton Mall if you know where that is.

Sure do. I actually went to Stockton myself. I live in Atco about 5 minutes from the race track if you know where that is. It's about the only thing my town is known for. :D

I live in NJ. It's hard to be a firearms enthusiast here, but it's still doable. I would rather live here than in CA.

In a few years, after my stepdaughter starts college, I'll be moving out of this state. In the meantime, once you have your NJFID, you can do okay. When you want to buy handguns, apply for a few pistol permits at a time so you can buy them in a group if that's your thing.

As far as the "smart gun" law goes, that technology doesn't even exist. And as someone who knows about electrical engineering as well as guns, I doubt it will anytime soon.

m23haz - you asked a question which I don't think was answered yet.

"No, you do not have to register your guns when you move into NJ."

You SHOULD apply for your NJ firearms ID card as soon as you move in. Don't carry a firearm in your vehicle (for whatever reason) until you get that card.

That said, I know some troopers and they are decent people. However, it takes a long time to move up the ranks in NJSP.

Don't give up on THR. There are some people here who are willing to help answer your questions without busting your chops.

Virginia used to be heavy into that tax, but has reduced it a lot. You used to pay it on your househould goods too. Now the only things you pay it on are cars, trailers and boats. I've been using the Virginia Turbo Tax for years and it's never asked me about firearms.

Unless, of course, your chops need busting.

I moved to FL to go to school here.
I hate it here.
The schools and govt programs are a lot better in NJ than in FL. And just for the record, my car insurance is higher in FL than it was in NJ. Everyone gets all excited about FL not having income tax but they tax food and clothes and the food here is expensive!
None of that has anything to do with firearms.

Sometimes, chops need busting.

I sympathize with, and encourage, anyone from the northeast who wants to leave Florida and return home. You can do that without putting the knock on my home.

Come to think of it, all you folks in the northeast should believe everything he says - Don't move to Florida!

;)

Kevin, of course I know where Atco is!

I used to go to the track all of the time when I lived in NJ. I love cars and I used to run my Camaro there and go with a bunch of friends who have various cars.

We will have to meet up!

Thats pretty cool that you went to Stockton also. What years were you there?

And thanks for the info WT, that is what I was looking for. I know its hard to move up in the SP but I think I might give it a shot because if you can move up there is money to be made and I think it would be a good career.

m23haz

get your FID like others said, if you want to be really airtight on the whole situation, find a gun store that will store your guns for a fee, and leave them till you ahve quired the FID, which can take a while, expect at least 60 days. Longest I heard of was slightly over 6 months. You are taking a risk of getting busted on the moving in trip without it while transporting if you don't. I leave that risk assessment up to you.

Being born and raised in NJ, I'd also say seriously reconsider your choices especially if you haven't been here for the majority of the last 4 years. It has gotten BAD. Trafiic congestion is insane. I have a 16 mile commute to work. It usually takes me 40min plus each way. I have what many consider to be a GOOD commute. The overcrowding is basically leading to some of the worse attitudes you will find in people anywhere in the country. Pick any situation, and I guarnatee you there are enough people pissed off enough to exacerbate it. This can be anything from going to the supermarket to getting your hair cut, not just things like driving. SOuth jersey is a bit better, but not much.

As for car insurance.. BAD. real bad. If you are a florida resident, it will be REALLY REALLY bad. You will get hit with a surcharge for being a new resident. it will be steep. For example, my friend had a suspended license because he was an idiot. Because he was suspended and didn't have the cash to buy his way out of it, he dropped his insurance. When he got back to driving, he had no points, and had a surcharge for not previously ahving insurance. the surcharge was more than the surcharge for having killed someone with your car. As an out of stater you will be hit with a surcharge that IIRC is four figures just as a way to say howdy, welcome to NJ.

Property tax is BAD. Not a little bad, a lot bad, especially in the last couple of years. The average home is something like $300k. During the upswing in the market, municipalities basically ignored the price inflation, assessed the value lower than market, but upped the rate to increase revenue. Now, being cash strapped due to idiotic spending and a contracting tax base due to the economy, a number of them are reappraising property to match market with tax rates of 3-5%. The net result is you cna very easily have to cough up the equivalent of your mortgage payment in taxes each month. The rate of personal bankruptcies in NJ has started shooting up in the last 18 months, it's going to get interesting.

It's not all about guns, it's jsut getting straight up BAD to live here. The quality of living index has plummeted in the last two-three years.

On top of that, the laws are getting pretty bad, not jsut gun laws, pretty much in every category we are swamped with idiotic new laws that pretty much screw over everyone not involved in lining the pockets of our politicians.

Seriously, unless your houshold income is going to be over 100k for homeownership (and I use the term home loosely to describe the quality of dwelling you will be living in most likely, once again south jersey is a BIT better, but not that much), or about $67k for apartment dwelling, you are pretty much living paycheck to paycheck.

Basically, if there is ANYPLACE else appealing to you, seriously consider it, NJ is basically full, and we are all getting cranky about it.

Thank you for your insight Raz-o.

I know a lot about NJ and I have been thinking about this decision long and hard over the past year. Right now, I just think it is what I want. If things don't work out then I can always leave, I am not tied down to anything.

SJ is not as bad as NJ as far as the crowding goes like you stated. I think (know) eventually every place in this country (and world) is going to be crowded. I work in the mortgage business here in FL and I see how much it is growing here every day. Where I live right now, in Hillsborough County, the housing prices are not far off of what they are in NJ. My girlfriend has been looking for a condo the last couple months and the prices in one complex have gone up $20k just over the summer. I do these mortgages and I can tell you that it is bad here also. Can you get a cheap house? Sure, but you have to live far outside of the city limits in the middle of nowhere around some suspect people. This is not just a NJ problem, it is a national problem. I don't want to have to live in a place that I do not like just so I can have an inexpensive house. Not to offend anyone here but I am just not a Southern person and I feel out of place here.

Two more questions:

1. What does it take to get a CCW permit?

2. Can you buy guns from out of state and what is the procedure?

Thanks!

1. What does it take to get a CCW permit?
Divine intervention.
2. Can you buy guns from out of state and what is the procedure?
Same procedure as it is in most states, according to federal law. You have your local FFL dealer provide a signed ink copy of their license to the out of state dealer, that dealer ships to them, then your dealer transfers the firearm to you. You may receive it as long as you have your NJFID in the case of long guns, or the NJFID + One pistol purchase permit in the case of handguns. Remember you need one permit for each pistol purchased.

I used to go to the track all of the time when I lived in NJ. I love cars and I used to run my Camaro there and go with a bunch of friends who have various cars.

What year Camaro? I used to run my 92 down there a few times along with my 93 Formula and my 97 Trans Am that I have now. My last semester at Stockton was the summer of 02. When are you coming back to Jersey? If I'm still around when you get back we'll definately have to meet up. I'll be shipping out for the Air Force probably in mid to late October if all goes smoothly.

Nice that was always the 3rdgen that I wanted. Mine as a green RS with that damn 3.1. I then got my 93 Forumla with the speed density 350 LT1 and traded that for an 84 Vette. Sold the vette last year and bought a bunch of guns after I bought my 97 Trans Am with the dual cat 350 LT1. That car ain't goin nowhere for a while. :)
