I called it!

The writing on the wall is clear. They're going urban and blue to increase sales, so you can kiss your old gun-friendly Wally World goodbye.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm interested to hear what predictions people have regarding firearms and gun laws in the new year.

Personally, I predict that Wal-Mart, in its continuing drive to court the urban and blue state market, will cut back but probably not totally eliminate firearm and ammunition sales. I base this on Wal-Mart's known marketing moves and goals, along with rumors of a big cut in the works. The big losers, as Tom Gresham recently pointed out, will be those gun companies that have gotten most deeply in bed with Wal-Mart. If this happens, expect the company to swear up and down it has to do with sales, not politics.

Walgreens

I got my first gun at the Walgreens Drug Store in Midland, Texas. 12 guage 870 for $98.

Wish I had bought 2 or 3 more!

Time was you could buy a gun anywhere. Anybody remember buying them through a catalog? That was the day!

Has anyone ever seen a Walmart that sells Handguns?

Yes, although they stoped carring them in the stores, they will still order just about anyone you want. The local manager told me it was a two fold reason not to carry them in the stores anymore. One was to avoid bad press but two was that they saved alot of money by not inventoring them and only ordering them when a customer wanted one because nation wide they did not sell that many handguns compared to long guns.

Well I just went to two different local Walmart and noticed that neither one had any firearms...just airsoft! The sporting goods manager told me that walmart as a whole will soon stop selling firearms nationwide. Not surd how true this is, but it sucks...

Reason I think it sucks? According to some sources, they are the largest retailer of guns in this country. Of course, they have hundreds of "gun shops" in every state, or most states.

Less retailers = less competition = higher prices.
Back in the 1980s, I was working for a company named Herman's Sporting Goods. It was one in a large national chain of Sporting Goods stores by that name. I was one of the Hunting, Fishing and Camping equipment salesmen. We had our own large section which took up approximately the back 25% of the whole store (and the store itself was very large), and we were essentially a full service, and very busy, small gun shop back there, including gunsmithing services, along with fishing, hunting, shooting, archery and camping supplies, and the salesman for that department were all specialized, all highly experience in at least one or two of those areas. We had our own dedicated department manager, a Vietnam vet/retired gunsmith, who essentially ran it as in independent store within a store. Herman's was doing very well nationally at that time. Then someone at corporate decided that carrying firearms created a bad image for the chain, and the guns went, and so did I. I went into the store a few months after the guns were removed, and you could hear a pin drop. The place was dead. Within just a short few years the entire company closed up shop. I can't help but to think that the two were related.

There was a comment above about Remington going out of business if Wally World quits selling them.

I heard from a distributors rep that a few years ago Walmart bought a whole bunch of Remingtons, beat Remington down on the price, and when they didn't sell they forced Remington to take them back at a loss.

Don't know about Remington specifically, but do know for a fact that is a typical Wal-Mart tactic.

I do very little business at Wally World. They have pretty much been in the lead of destroying the America I knew as a kid

Amen to that. They could roll up the sidewalks and close the doors to every one of them tomorrow. For every two "jobs" they create, they push three formerly independant Mom and Pops out of business.

FWIW, I've owned literally hundreds of guns over the course of my life, and have YET to buy one from Wally World.

The Ace Hardware store in far northwest Austin, just south of 183 North and McNeil, sells guns and ammo. But then, they are a Libertarian haven, with "This is a UN-Free Zone" signs in the windows. They carry military surplus, too. Bob Daisy, who has an Austin cable access show called, "The Simple Truth" works there.

Out here in Blanco County, in the heart of the hill country, the hardware stores all carry ammo. No guns, though, for the simple reason that EVERYONE in the country (in Texas) already has plenty of guns. GOD BLESS TEXAS!!!!!!!

Wall-mart

They already don't sell 303 ammo, and I couldn't find the [Rifle] magazine. If they quit selling fire arms it will be because they don't make enough proffit. Rember they only sell new guns,[so far], and all new guns don't come low priced.

I'll keep shopping for guns at the local True Value Hardware store, thank you. Not only do they not require me to be escorted to the cashier to pay for a box of ammo like Wally World, they have the distinct advantage of a WWII vet behind the gun counter. :neener:

I find that the bigger and more omnipresent Wally World becomes, the less stuff they have that I need or want.

I thought THR was going to have to have a Wal-Mart forum with all the friggin' Wal-Mart threads! I welcome the demise of such threads.
Yeah, Tejon, but with the demise of such threads will begin the threads, "I Wisht Wally Werl Still Solt Guns n Ammo"

If Wal-Mart has a company decides to stop firearms sale sit will make the national business news. I some how doubt they will stop, Wal-Mart will do anything for growth and to lose a couple hundred million a year in sales is not something they want to do.

I don't doubt it since most Western, Mid Western, Mid Alantic and Nothern New England states are in the transition of becoming or already are Democrat. Its the urbaninsation of America.

Well, it took them long enough, but here's their response:

Thank you for your message.

Dear Mr. Leighton,

I had forwarded your email to our Buying Team for assistance and this
is the response I have received back:
"This is merely a "RUMOR". Each year we evaluate our stores and do
remove guns from some stores. This is only based on financial performance of the
category. This is done not only with guns but every category in our stores. We
apologize for any confusion that this may have caused. thank you"

Wal-Mart appreciates your business and your correspondence.
Thank you for contacting Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

Why would any working American with an IQ over 2 go to Wal-Mart anyway? Companies like that are why the USA is on the brink of imploding. Try to raise a family on their wages and benefits. Remember a recession is when your neighbor loses his job,a depression is when you lose your job. BTW,I hate wal-Mart.:banghead:
