I originally posted here asking what it would take to purchase a rifle in the state of NJ. I was told by some of you that I needed to just fill out an application for a firearms id card, and I'd get the permit within a few months. My moms bf however is also interested in purchasing a rifle. He went down to the police station to ask what he needed to do. They told him he has to call and make an appointment, and that he has to meet with an officer to fill out all this paperwork, and to have fingerprints taken, and all this other crap. Says the backround check can take from 6 weeks to 6 months. Is this normal procedure? I always thought all you needed to do was fill out an application, and they do the backround check that way. All this extra hassle is beginning to annoy the hell out of me(I hate new jersey!). Was wondering what you guys thought. Thanks

yes, you have to go down to your local police station, or if your local PD is covered by NJSP, then you have to go to the closest barracks (aside from ones on either the Turnpike or the Parkway).
Yes, the officer will meet with you, and will probably help you fill out the form. IIRC, he'll also take a copy of your driver's liscense. Finally, they'll take your finger prints. Took me about 45 minutes / 1 hour in the SP barracks when I applied for my stuff...
It took me about 3 months after submitting my paperwork to get my FID and permits to purchase a pistol back.
Not too terrible, but certainly not something that I would prefer to go through.

That's puzzling. When you buy a gun from a dealer here in Mass., he makes a telephone call to the FBI for a background check. Takes five minutes.

What I got was a "Fill this out, gimmie the money, and go downstairs for your fingerprinting, we will call you in a few months". All in all, took no more than a half hour, including the time required to get a money order from the local post office.

And I thought Illinois sucked. At least we don't have to have the local Police help us fill out the FOID card application nor get fingerprinted and a proctate exam. (Do you also have to give a stool/urine/DNA sample ??)

Yeah, don't rub it in. I am actually looking forward to moving into MA (how bad is that!) because it is wicked easy to get a carry permit.

I had to go through less @#$%^&! to get a concealed carry permit in Colorado! It took three weeks start to finish.

As for the statute that limits the time it supposedly takes to get a FID, the state supreme court has ruled that it "is in the interest of society" that the police get as much time as they want to perform a thorough background check, which effectively leaves NJ subjects no recourse for police failure to take action on FID applications.
The law specifies a process for rejection, but not failure to take action, and so sitting on FID apps is common practice.
The NJ State Supreme Court plays it entirely fast and loose with the statutes. The same court decided that the Dems could yank a losing candidate for US Senate and swap in the evil mummy Lousenberg right before the election, in direct defiance of the time limits in the statutes, "in the interest of preserving the two party system".
As they say, rope, tree, some assembly required.

As for MA, it is very hard to get a permit to OWN a firearm (1 8 hr class that costs 100$, plus a 100$ fee, renewed every 6 years).
Then, if you get the best permit, it also doubles as a CCW (assuming all goes well). Some Chief of police will hand em out like candy (see North Attleboro,etc), others will not give you anything. Just something to think about.

When I got mine I didn't meet with anyone, I picked up the form, brought it home, filled it out, went back with my money and id, got fingerprinted, and waited. I don't recall how long it took, it was a while because some paperwork got lost then I moved during the process and basically had to start over.
