Made in 1962 this 18-2 has a Target .500 hammer and the wide target trigger. It is also the ONLY 18-2 I have seen with a front red ramp insert and a white outline rear blade. It came with rubber grips. Would anyone know if this is a TTT model that originally came with Target stocks? Is the red ramp insert a factory option?

Thanks for any input!

According to the Standard Catalog of S&W it came with walnut Magna style grips and a combat style 1/8" Baughman Quick Draw on a plain ramp base front sight with micrometer click adjustable rear sight. Do not see anywhere it came with a red ramp or target stocks. You can get a letter on it to see if it was ordered that way.

I'm leaning toward add ons - albeit nice ones - as well. Those features were definitely available in 1962, but kinda think special order only on an 18. Letter may be the only way to answer.
I haven't ever seen a 15 or 18 with any of those factory features - until yesterday.

Just yesterday we had an older guy come out to our public range with a pre-18 5 screw that was 100% with the exception of the beginnings of a turn line.
The pistol had a target hammer and I could not make the clear call as to whether the sideplate had ever been off. The colors on that hammer were the most vivid I have ever seen on a Smith. Gosh, did I want that gun! I would letter it if I get it.

Made him a pretty fair offer that surprised him as he had absolutely no idea what he had. Got him to take my number, so who knows? At least he will take good care of it now.

Definitely not how it came from the factory. IMHO, it's almost criminal to add a red insert to a plain black post or ramp.

Mine also has a target trigger and hammer.

Not how it came from the factory.....unless it was ordered that way. Red ramps and whjite outlines were not standard on mosdt guns, but were offered, as they did exist on the Model 29 back then, and were probably available on origfinal special order, or if you sent your gun back in.

I'm sure someone had the white outline rear blade and red ramp installed after they bought it.

The M-18 did not come with any of these target options as it was considered the sub-calibre understudy to the M-15.

They were either special ordered from the factory or added after it left the factory
