Tell me about the S&W Model 10

I just picked up my first M10, a well worn 10-5 pencil barrel (from Jonathon here on the board), and absolutely love it. The classic looks, and timeless function just make it a joy to hold, the super smooth and light trigger make it great to shoot. Now I just need to find a good concealable holster for it...

and find a 2", and then maybe a model 22 or a 3" 64, or maybe.....:p

I bought mine for a song, 50% finish 10-4 3" 1962, for $125. I carry it everywhere. It is older than me, sweet bang switch, and is fairly accurate out to 25 yds. What more could I ask for? I traded it in on a bottom feeder, when the Glock broke I went and bought it back for the same amount I traded it in on plus a holster and a speed loader.

The S&W Model 10 is the classic double-action revolver. It has been in production for over 100 years in a caliber that equipped most American police departments at one time. Even today, it still soldiers on as a personal defense weapon for many individuals. Need I say more?

Okay...sounds like these aren't pretty but lock up good with a nice bore.

Ramp front sites.

Most of them have an A in front of the serial numbers while one has no letter in front of the numerals.

Any guesses on the vintage?

Just talked to them again and sounds like 3 screw frames.

From some quick researching this sounds like the frame and sights say at least mid 50's or later but the serial number doesn't fit that?

The 3 screw frames came about in the early 60's, IIRC. I'm not good with S&W serials but I don't think an A prefix would be any earlier than the 80's.

Really...I thought since the C's were from the 40's time frame the A's would have been earlier...still, 80's works for me.

Does an M&P serial number have to start with letters?

I have a S&W that I believe is a Model 10. Its serial number is 933***

Mike,
All Model 10s do have an aphabetical prefix of some sort to the serial number.

Pre-war Models of 1905, commonly called M&Ps or Military & Police revolvers (1915-1942) do not. this is what your revolver probably is. It should have a half moon front sight, a tapered barrel, and a long action.

Thanks XB.

My Father carried this pistol while he was a beat cop in one of the most rough and tumble areas of the North East. He was on the force during the Newark riots in the late 60's. I put a new grip on it and I'm probably going to hit it with a little Oxpho-Blue to clean her up. Its still tight and shoots very well. It is in fact my go-to pistol for HD. :)

As I understand it, Smith and Wesson's prefixes weren't done in alphabetical order until the 80's. All I know about serial numbers, I found on smith-wessonforum.com.

Please note that this list is a general guide and not meant to be exact. There is some dispute regarding the dates on some serial numbers and your gun may actually be a year off from what is listed. The precise shipping date as "lettered" can be several years off depending on model. For the exact date on your gun request the letter from Roy Jinks.
