Please pick only one, not one for every caliber, not one for target shooting and one for concealed carry, just ONE, and gush about why it is your favorite.

If you are having trouble picking, assume the gun-grabbers win, and for whatever reason say, fine, you may have one handgun, no new ones, and we're coming to check your compliance. Which one would you want to live with for the rest of your life? (I know, not the most realistic scenario--don't let it hijack the thread please.)

My favorite is still my first. A S&W 629 classic. I have shot it alot in the 10 years since I bought it and it is still my baby. There are others I have shot more, and others I shoot better but there is still something about the first one.

Tough limitations ... but I've also seen similar threads where a "single gun" question became a gun-for-every-occasion thread ...

But ... I'd have to say it's my 3913. :what:

Sure, I REALLY like .45 ACP ... and like all of my handguns, both revolvers & pistols ... but if I was going to be limited to a single handgun, I'd dedicate it to close range personal defense use, and pick a 9mm ... and that would be the 3913.

I've always considered the 3913 to be pretty much state-of-the-art for compact 9mm pistols.

Decent DA/SA transition ...

The shortest SA reset in a defensive centerfire pistol, making follow-up shots very fast ...

More than sufficient "defensive" accuracy ...

Minimal perceived recoil, and faster in shot-to-shot recovery out at 10-25 yards than with my .45's, .40's, .357 & .44 Magnums ...

The currently available JHP ammunition has been shown to be capable of potential penetration & expansion in actual shooting situations of an "average" range from 10-17"/.45-.65 ... and the performance potential of much of the newer & better 9mm JHP ammunition is very, very good ...

Acceptable capacity at 8+1, which is the approx "middle ground" of compact 9mm pistol magazine capacity ...

The grip frame angle it uses has been shown to be ergonomically neutral for a wide range of people, requiring the least effort to "point" naturally ...

9mm FMJ training ammunition is available virtually anywhere in the US at very inexpensive prices ... and it's a very common L/E caliber ...

MY 3913 has always functioned perfectly, regardless of ammunition brand & type, and so have all of the other agency & personally owned 3913's of which I'm aware ...

It has a Lifetime Warranty through S&W ...

Last, but not least, it's such a convenient size and weight for legal concealed carry ...

I agree with Jeeper. I have a 629 4 inch and I can do anything with it that I want to do with a handgun. Second choice would be a 1911. Back to the M629, in my ammo shelf is 300 grain Federal Cast Core (hunting/bear SD), 240 gr JHPs (hunting whitetails), 240 grain LSWCs (for utility/IDPA/SD), 200 gr CCI Gold Dots (for SD). Nothing else is as flexible.

I've competed in IDPA with it and it's small enough for concealed carry.

No CCW provision where I'm at, but my fav(s) is.....

My home built 9mm 1911. Caspain lower, S.A. slide and hand fitted Kart barrel. Boringly accurate! :)

P.S.
Its followed by my accurized CD, also with handfitted Kart barrel. Sorry ' can't help it. I have to mention her or she might get jealous. :)

Ruger Standard Model Auto .22LR.

Why:
- It's very accurate (I hit what I point at more often than not)
- It's reliable (for a .22 anyway)
- It's cheap to feed (fraction of the cost of centerfires)
- Most anyone can operate it effectivily with little difficulty
- It can throw a lot of lead in a hurry to exactly where you
want it to go

It's just an all around useful handgun

The Browning Hi-Power because:
Been Around since 1935
Brainchild of JMB
First Hi-Cap 9mm
Fits great
Looks great
Still in use today
Cheap Hi-Caps

When I had t consolidate my collection many years ago, I sold off all my guns except my P7M8. It's easily the gun w/ the nicest trigger & the quickest to put on target.

I make no apolagies for showing this pic again .... because this (a replacement for an earlier one I used to have) represents to me the nirvana of handgun possession!!

Quite simply, this 5" barrel version of the Mod 27 is the ultimate wheel gun for me . it is large, strong, and so balanced as to be orgasmic!!! I chose the original one, back in about 1981 .. because I ''fell in love'' ... this is more esthetic than pure funtionality I admit .. but it shoots well enough too. I still drool when I handle it ....... even this replacement .. purchased a mere few weeks ago.

My favorite is my Kimber Compact. Chosen because it is reliable, very accurate, has good stopping ability, and conceals well.

Kahr K-9.
Cheap ammo.
Good CCW.
Accurate enough for defense.
Fits my hand like a glove.
Can fill many of my needs.
Ulitmate compromise of features for me.

If this was which two handguns....

Since I am limited to what I have...

My Sig P225 would get the vote. I like my Glock, Charles Daly 1911, etc, but I think the Sig fits the best overall. Easy to fire, cheap to fire, accurate, and looks good while doing it. Not too big, not too small.

The Only handgun For the Rest of My Life?!

You know there are some hypothetical questions that are fun to think about. Well, this is not one of them:eek:

I guess it would be my Sig Sauer P226 9mm. Its the one pistol I really wanted ever since I got interested in shooting and has lived up to my expectations. Its marvelously accurate, reliable as all heck, and its in a caliber thats easy to find. I also figure when I'm old, feeble, and recoil sensitive I could still shoot it without too much trouble.:p

I'd sorely miss my Glock 23 and Colt 1991 though. What a terrible world that would be.:banghead: Oh course I'd have to get a bunch of shotguns and rifles instead.

Based on your scenario

I'ld have to go with a colt 1911--

I assume that under these circumstances, we wouldn't be able to replace firearms and also that parts would be scarce and repair probably out of the question--

With the 1911 parts I have on hand I could prob keep a 191 alive for several lifetimes--

After living over half a century I've come to the conclusion that there's 3 things in life that can handle just about every situation.

1.) $1000.00 in cash.
2.) A good swift kick in the groin.
3.) A 240 gr JSP @ 1400 fps.

Best thing for throwing #3 I own is a Smith model 29.

My favorite: Springfield Armory Stainless Loaded Target
