What made you start carrying?

To be honest, I started because I wanted to make a political statement to our new so called king and his anti gun croonies.

I walk my dogs on a game preserve. They have encoutered, and I have had to remove one too many porcupine quills.... The only way I can carry my .22 revolver to avoid this type of unfortunate incident is with a CCW... But, now I just carry everywhere because it allows me to provide the maximum amount of hard security for me and my family. It also motivates me to practice shooting, and soft security skills as well.

What made you start carrying?
That's easy. An election.

Years ago, an upcoming election didn't look like it was going to go our way. For some reason I thought it wise to immediately get a carry permit, so I did. I had the permit for a few months before I began to carry everyday/everywhere as I do today.

I didn't grow up with or around guns of any sort, and my mother is a pretty strong anti. My father is pretty much indifferent, though he has memories of rabbit hunting with his grandpa, and having some experience with the "farm" guns that they had.

I didn't think much about guns until I was married, and I bought a 12 Gauge Maverick 88 for HD. After my son was born, I decided that I wanted that same protection wherever I went, not just in the home. Furthermore, the local cities (to which I have to travel occasionally) are getting more and more out of hand. Stabbings, shootings, rape, robbery, and a constant influx of no good drug users/dealers. Basically, I am inspired by the old adage about better to have it and not need it etc etc.

reading the newspaper is all it took for me....

two incidents in particular....

Car jacking two towns over in which a woman was raped in front of her daughter.

&

the home invasion out west where the guy stalked the family and then killed all but the two little ones, which he kidnapped and raped in the woods.... then killed the boy with a hammer and only the little girl was rescued.

I can't just sit by and read this stuff without putting myself in those peoples shoes... what would I do?

Unarmed... I'd have the exact same outcome

armed.... hopefully I'd fair better

Who wants to wake up one day and be on the short end of a statistic?

I'm only a few short miles from the Mexican border. Maybe some of you have seen on the news reports on how Mexico is coming apart at the seams from drug cartel violence. It's pretty much total chaos over there with thousands of killings and the government ISN'T gaining the upper hand, despite what the media might report. Some of it slips across to this side occasionally in the form of kidnappings and carjackings. I've owned guns for decades, but never considered concealed carry until early last year. And I now have wrought iron bars over all the windows and doors to my house, too.

The Wild West isn't completely gone, fellas... :scrutiny:

Moving to West Virginia. I never felt the need in Minnesota but in WV, there are some weird people here.

Not to mention it seems someone is getting murdered every day here and it barely makes the news.

There was no real incident for me. I started getting interested in purchasing a pistol and I naturally thought why not carry it. It was at the time my first child was born and that had something to do with it. I take my responsabilities as a father very seriously and I realize that if something were to happen to myself or my children that I have failed my highest priorities in life, to support, love, raise, teach and protect my children.

That plus just the barrage of bad news and violence out there. There is no reason for me to think that I am somehow immune to it. When evil comes knocking at my door I will be prepared.

I carried when I lived in a very dangerous city for college, and on more than one occaision it saved my butt. Then I returned to the quiet of the mountains here in Virginia. Then one day a guy named Morva broke out of custody and shot some LEOs and was hiding near my kid's daycare. I went and got my kid as they were going into lockdown, and drove him to my dad's where my wife could get him and take him to my mom's in the next county. I had to go back to the house and get diapers and formula and such. Well, my house is a stone's throw from the daycare center, and the neighborhood was under lockdown, but they cop gaurding the street knew me and allowed me to go into my house after he saw that I had my shotgun with me. I started contemplating carrying again that day. Then a few months later, and a mile from my house, a bastard named Cho killed 32 people. Again I fetched my son from daycare and my wife and I met out at my moms in the next county. I then went ahead and got my concealed handgun permit. I realized I probably should have had it the whole time, and I was stupid not to get it sooner.

A Determination That I Would Defend Myself and My Family.

Also some careful consideration and quite a lot of thought. I don't believe it's a decision to be taken lightly.

My hubby and I just quailified with the sheriffs dept to get our CCW. There have been many incidents in the past that have made me want to carry.
When I lived in a little CA town (pop 700) I had 3 guys try to break into my house. Broke ones arm with a 24 inch cresant wrench.
When I lived in NY I was the victim of a mugging/purse snatching. That happened so fast I don't think a weapon would have help. Grabbed purse, jumped in car. It scared me, I could of been put in that car very easily. Now I don't carry a purse, and I'm very aware of my surroundings.
Moved to WY. It was pretty quiet here. But now we have a lot of out of staters, some are good, some are up to no good. Being on I-80 a lot of drugs coming through. Our quiet little neighborhood, isn't anymore with all the druggies and wanna be gang bangers.
I was accosted with my kids in a mini mart, stayed to protect the little bitty clerk. Locked my kids in the car.
But the final straw was the job I'm doing now. I do some traveling. Although I don't have to deal with cash, most people don't realize that. One of my first days on the job I had a guy that kept trying to get behind me. I was working outside, they were at a gas pump, I was aware of them. The passenger walk a long ways out of his way to get behind me. I turned and faced him. He went back to the pump. I went back to work. I caught him coming up behind me again, again I turned and faced him. In total he did this 3 times. I feel I wasn't a victim that day cuz he couldn't get the upper hand, he couldn't surprise me. Sometimes that's not enough. That was the day I decided I would get my CCW. Until then I have a screw driver I keep in my back pocket for work anyway.

I started carrying or various reasons. The first was because I felt the need in general. I started to feel that many people were starting to go to the edge. No one I knew, but just attitudes. The second was because I just felt I was responsible enough. I was 24 when I got the CCW and the gun. I could have at 21 but I didn't feel responsible enough.

I started not because of an incident, but because I was aware of what could happen.

Two times I have been really glad I had my gun on me. Once I would have been justified to draw (crime in progress), but didn't because no weapons were displayed and nobody was getting hurt. The dirtbag ran off with the contents of the convenience store drawer and I was relieved because while I will shoot to save my life or the life of family with no hesitation, I am not interested in tying up my life in the courts for the $50 in a cash register.

LOL, I think if the cartels ever come to your house, or you get caught in the middle of a fight out in public, a handgun is going to be about as useful as a whistle.

Shall Issue law was passed under a Republican governor. Democrat governor got elected. My take: use (the right) it or lose it. (The law has remained the shall-issue, though).

A buddy of mine who is the nicest guy in the world sold his business. The new owner couldn't run the business and was angry that he wasn't making as much money as he wanted to. Friend never lied and the paperwork was accurate at the time of sale.

Two guys came into his new store one day. Saying they had a car problem. He went out to jump the car, and they pulled a gun on him. They forced him in the car, and drove him out to the desert.

They thought they killed him. They beat him for hours, and left him there. He made it back into town, and was in the hospital for weeks.

They were never caught. These animals are running around town free as can be. I don't know who they are, and it made me think I don't ever want to be in that position.

That is what started me carrying.

Katrina is why I bought a lot MORE guns, and why I carry a spare 17 round mag in my car on top of what I carry on my person.

I am too old ,too fat. and my son in law is a sheriff.and he is too big to carry.:D

If anyone knows the Hampton Roads area of VA... I lived in Ocean View for a year or two. That was enough to make me carry. :)

There are people on the street who would like to hurt you. You don't know who they are. They expect their victims to be unarmed show little resistance. I intend to prove them wrong.
