Why I HATE the NRA

You know I felt the same way about the DMV, sending me renewals for this and that, registration, licenses, etc.
So much junk mail.

I finaly just quit the DMV and live a great life now.

I do get tired of being passed constantly though. Nobody has any respect for a horse anymore.

(Sarcasm off)

What you do, if you care, is let the agency (NRA in this case) know that their subcontractor sucks.

What you do if you DON'T care is simply hang up and post whining threads on Internet forums.

Which is why I PM'd the OP to refer him to a recruiter to see about what could be done. What was your initial post in this thread? If you don't care, why are you expecting the OP to?

how much money did you send them to "buy" that knife and duffle bag?

Since I purchase a lot of swag for my job I know how much stuff like that costs, so probably about $10-$15 out of the $100 I paid for the 5-year membership.

Being a realist, I'm okay with that

Also since I have done work with organizations that operate mostly from donations I also know that most donations go to overhead.

Being a realist, I'm okay with that too.

Facts of political life -- politicians don't listen to individual voters and they don't listen to or care much about reason. They care about numbers. One hundred phone calls or letters in support of or against something are better than 10. Ten thousand would be a lot better yet. It doesn't matter what the caller or writer says is the reason to support or oppose the thing. All that matters is the number on each side of the question.

An NRA with 4 million members gets attention. An NRA with 5 million will get more, and an NRA with 10 million members could get some real serious attention. As annoying as the NRA can be, it's in our interests to see it grow and prosper.

Politicians aren't swayed by fine arguements, logical demonstrations or even facts. They are swayed by how many voters (and potential voters and contributors) line up on each side of the question.

Quitting never changed a thing.
I'll second that!
What problem was ever solved by failing to addressing it or quitting? None I can think of.

My Grandfather (a 3x decorated WWII vet) once told me: "Don't you ever quit a fight 'til it's done, boy! Because if you do, it will haunt you the rest of your days on God's green Earth."

I think he was probably right in more than one aspect.

I do care. I care enough to believe that someone who does this in a very public forum, without even stopping to address the organization directly:

At that point I hung up on her.
Why I HATE the NRA
I am not a member of the NRA. And the NRA has nobody to blame for that other than themselves and their money-grubbing methods of operation.
In fact, it's a bit past due -- thanks to the NRA's rapacious method of operating.

Is not someone that can contribute in any meaningful way.

's OK if they keep sending me junk mail. Talk is cheap.

It keeps the US Postal Service in business

Like my mother always told me..."no talk, do!!" Now that there is actually a victory FOR gun rights, I will send them a check...not a membership fee, just a donation in the amount of the membership fee.

See NRA, if you step up to the plate, I'll step up to the plate. No need for the telemarketers and all of this marketing BS, just do your job and I'll do mine.

Thank you, NRA

What would you suggest I do, mail bombs out to senators I don't like?

...

We cannot all do the mighty things that you do... By the way, what do you do?

I didn't know this thread/site was supposed to be a pissing contest... Oh well...

For openers I work for a living and support a family. I suspect I've done it for longer than you've been on earth, and possibly since before your parents were born. I've paid my own way through life and continue to do so. You?

Another thing I do from time to time is read messages from gunowners who talk about sending "mail bombs to senators" and try to suggest that it's not healthy for you to think that way. It's also not especially bright.

Yet another thing I do is help carry you and many of the other keyboard gun rights activists here. Like TexasRifleMan, TexasSkyhawk, and some others who see the way you folks behave, I realize that you're not the kind of people on whom anyone can depend.

So I try to help make up for your dead weight. The two Texans and other responsible, mature, and levelheaded adults here do more than our share so that we can make up for "individual gun rights activists" like you.

As for your comment that "I didn't know this thread/site was supposed to be a pissing contest," try to grow up.

I had a similar experience a few years back. They also sent me a tape I considered junk mail and tossed it in the trash. I don't even have a VHS player.

I requested the junk mail to stop, but I kept getting renewal notices once a week sometimes more. Also received four collection notices for a tape I never requested.

So I let my membership lapse a few years ago. Not sure If I will sign up again or not.

See NRA, if you step up to the plate, I'll step up to the plate. No need for the telemarketers and all of this marketing BS, just do your job and I'll do mine.

Thank you, NRA

You're certainly welcome.

If we succeed in winning the battle for your Second Amendment rights and there's nothing left to fight will you send the NRA another check?

Tips are much appreciated. There's a big tip jar on Wayne LaPierre's desk and the servers split the money. $5 would be more than enough if you're happy with their service. Whatever you choose to give is much appreciated. It's the thought that counts. We'll tell your server.

I don't even have a VHS player.

Who can blame you for letting your NRA membership lapse for years and years after an unforgiveable insult like that. On behalf of NRA members everywhere, I apologize to you. We certainly don't mind carrying you throughout your lifetime in the fight for your Second Amendment rights. It's the least we can do.

Robert Hairless-

Wow, you're older than me, you happened to be born before I was born... You want a freaking medal for that?

Why don't you state specific examples of what you do, rather than declaring how great you are, and how you carry not only your weight but the weight of others.

I've worked my share of 12 hour days but I don't wave my d--- in anybody's face over that fact. So what, you support your family? You're expected to support your family... You want a cookie and a parade?

I don't get into trouble with the law, I stay out of prison, I make an honest living... Where is my parade???? I do things that are a given... I don't wave it around as though it's anything special.

Like those jerk men who repeatedly make a point of saying "I don't hit my wife." Newsflash, you're not supposed to hit your wife, saying "I don't hit my wife" is nothing special, as the default expectation is that you won't hit her.

You make a big case out of how you support your family, but the default assumption is that somebody will support their family.

Get over yourself.

I have been on this site since 2006,read alot ,but dont post alot. This thread just finally got under my skin-so heres my soapbox. This has got to be the most retarded thread I have read in a long time.We just had a great victory in the supreme court over the handgun ban.The NRA was a great part of that victory.I dont care how many mail articles they send me.That has to be the most TRIVIAL crap I have ever read.Du does the same thing-ALL large orginazations do the same thing with mail outs.I would expect to read ANYTHING but a statement such as I HATE THE NRA....I would just drop off the site if I was you..Matter of fact why dont you just go ahead and leave this site and not renew your nra membership.I am sure that we can replace you real quick with some youth that dont worry about such trivial things.

They just sent me a "special Offer" to become a Life Member. A check for $400 to be applied to the $1000 dues and a bill for $25 per month if I choose to accept the offer. I think I'll remain an annual member, and send in my recruiter application.

The first thing that the antis would love to see is the pro gun supporters beating the crap out of each other. It just makes their job a hell of a lot easier. Rachen has a point, the Ming dynasty was beating itself up. The Manchus came in and simply cleaned up the mess.

I am paying the Easy Pay Life Time Member payments. $25 every three months. I've never had junk mail, phone calls, or any other contact other than my magazine and my bill which I gladly pay.

My 21 month old son is a paid in full life time member. I sent the check when he was a few hours old. He doesn't get any junk mail from the NRA.

I do not think, I know the NRA is a great organization and will always be a member. Funny I saw this topic because I just wrote to the NRA letting them know that they have totally wasted my dues and those of nothers by constantly sending out renewal requests to members that aren't up for renewal. They could fix this with a very simple computer program.

Having been annoyed by the NRA I decided to join GOA as a supplement and ultimately replacement to the NRA. Once my 5 year membership expires, I most likely will not be renewing anything with the NRA.

Do the NRA boosters have anything nasty to say about those of us who decide to back GOA?

So if don't support the NRA you don't support gun right? Therefore you don't belong on gun rights websites?

What are you some elitist?
Do NRA members have a special pass to gun rights sites?

It wasn't the NRA, GOA, JPFO, or any other group that propelled Heller forward towards the decision that we got. While all of those groups, and more, filed amici curiae in the Heller case, none of them are responsible for bringing the case nor the outcome.

Robert A. Levy is the man we should be thanking. As Levy funded Heller/Parker/et all from his own pocket and did not accept donations for his cause.

EOTechRulesAll,

For what it's worth, I think Robert Hairless has sensible and rational things to say and says them well. As to his being older -- well, life is pretty much like most things: the more practice you get the better you are at it. I suspect that I'm also older than you are.

As to what I have done, I retired last year after over 30 years as a successful corporate lawyer. For almost 15 years prior to my retirement, I was a senior lawyer and vice president of a Fortune 500 (for the last 5 or so years a Fortune 200) company. I was working there in 1987 when it was a small, and insolvent, company. And I was part of the management team that turned it around, took it public and made it one of the largest and most financially solid companies in its industry. And the point of that is that I probably know a little something about how to accomplish things.

Have a nice evening.

Fiddletown- Okay, that is good. But for what Robert Hairless did, is it fair to throw in a younger person's face the fact that they, being young, have not done as much as somebody who is significantly older?

Would anybody except that I've won a mountain of legal cases, changed the tide of a few important battles in at least one or two wars, sired a half-dozen children, made a few million dollars, written a best-selling book, etc, all before the age of 22?

It's not fair or logical to scold younger people for not having done things that they have not yet had the opportunity to do. I appreciate the time you took to make that post and clarify a few things, I am happy for you that you've done quite a bit of worthwhile stuff with your life thus far, and equally happy that you seem modest in it, and are not using it as a shield to hide behind and strike at others.

Do the NRA boosters have anything nasty to say about those of us who decide to back GOA?
I'm sure each and every one of us thinks that's just a great thing -- although if you poke around a bit you'll find posts from fellows who hate GOA just as much and for just as foolish a reason as the folks bashing the NRA here.

Moreover, to steal a bit of Robert Hairless' thunder, I don't exactly hear about gun-grabbing politicians cowering in fear from GOA. Again, for the record: you want to influence politicians, you add your voice to the NRA.

I didn't stop belonging to the NRA because they sent me mail all the time or that they called me now and again. But when they started sending me unasked for tapes of Tales of the Gun and wanting some money I was done.

Why?
They sent me a DVD of Top Ten Guns That Changed The World (or something like that). When I got it you couldn’t tell what it was and it had no return address, so I ripped the box open and inside was the DVD/letter telling me watch and keep, and if I like, send money or just return the DVD.
If I had known what it was I would have stuck it back in the box and refused shipment, but I certainly ain’t gonna go through the cost/trouble of re-packing it and sending it back. From what I understand, the law/Post Office says if you receive unsolicited items like this you don’t have to return ‘em, so I kept it and both I and my friends have enjoyed watching it!
Sure they tried to send me a few e-mails wondering where their money was, but based on the law, I just tossed the letters in the trash, and when the guy finally called, I told him what I understood the law to be and that was the end of that.
Won’t nuttin’ stop ‘em from sending you videos faster than just keeping the first one without paying for it!
BTW…not that it makes much difference, but if you read the fine print the video is not from the NRA, but a “partner” (I assume the NRA sold ‘em a mailing list?)

Now you wanna talk ‘bout something crappy…stay away from that credit card they’re offering from Bank of Omaha? I was going to order something from Cabela’s, and took ‘em up on their offer for the CC with a free $25 Cabela’s gift certificate. Now I pay my balance in full every month on all my cards, but these clowns ended up nailing me for ‘bout 3 interest charges, even when you paid the full amount shown on the bill before the due date! I called ‘em a few times and you never heard of such screwy bookkeeping in your life (most of which I assume is illegal?). Since it was for such a small amount I didn’t fight it, FINALLY paid it off (hell, you couldn’t pay the damn thing off even if you sent the total amount shown on the bill each month!), cancelled the account, and tossed the card.

Not bashing the NRA, but they really need to watch their “partners”!
‘Course, I have no problem receiving unsolicited DVDS! :D

I'm going to start sending the NRA $25 every time someone starts one of these threads. Call it my personal dumb*** tax.

.38 Special-

If it was 1922 and you wanted to influence politicians you added your voice to the Klan.

Do you just jump onboard any organization because they are large and have clout, or do you associate with groups that you agree with and genuinely support?

I find myself agreeing with less and less of what the NRA does, with each passing day. I do not believe I can reconcile a number of my views with a number of the NRA's recent actions.

Would it better that I just betray myself and stay in the NRA for the sake of being with the "biggest and best club around" or should I do what I believe is right?

Mods, please clean this thread up. It's going nowhere fast.

Divide and conquer guys. The more we split up into smaller groups, the less of a voice we have.

You know Eotech, the more I think about how much I love my freedoms, the more I like what the NRA does. I guess there just isn't convincing some people, same with the anti's. Emotion rules all. You guys get some unwanted mail and that sets your emotions ablaze.
