At times a correspondent posts a question on one of the forums, anywhere from simple new man question to very advanced gunny. Then there is a follow up post with a simple answer to the question. This usually followed by several more posts, some good, some wordy. But then somebody says something like "Post # 3 answered the question already."

Maybe so, but then there are possibilities of further explanation or more questions arise. Seems to me if one is in such an all-fired hurry, they could just quit reading further? No need to try to silence correspondents here.

Patience is needed on a forum, any type forum, as the same questions will get asked again over time. Some questions that seem simple to one person, may not be to another, and vice versa. All we can do is be patient and try to help. For the most part, we see a lot of that here (very helpful members), but we occasionally see just what Bob has alluded to as well.

Like Mom used to say, just be nice, and, if you don't have something helpful to say, just be quiet. Anyone else's Mom repeat that a zillion times when you were young? :)

WOW post 3 did answer it. :)

I try to not let petty stuff like that bother me.
More important thing to get my shorts in a wad over, like politics.
I just move on with life

Yes, any question you can think of has been asked before. But, times, techniques, and technology change. The correct answer from 6 months ago may not be relevant now. The "experts" that answered back then might have gained more experience. Now, if there is an ongoing discussion about the same issue, politely direct the op to it. If not, answer the question as best you can, or "don't say nuthin' at all."

It is just a plain fact that the same stuff gets rehashed over and over again here. Who cares? I love reading through the comments anyway. The other plain fact is that there is always that guy with a tip or spin on something that is still useful and IS something you haven't heard before.

I like to think of it as a bunch of folks setting in the living room and the question or discussion about gun (insert topic here) stuff come up in conversation. If the same thing get's rehashed, so be it. If a new guy walks in the room an hour later and didn't know it had been discussed, let him or her ask. Doesn't hurt anything. Besides, opinions change over time.

This is precisley the reason I come here. Polite discourse with like minded, respectful and intelligent individuals. If I have nothing to add I still get a volume of literary work to read, all about my favorite subject.

I concur that there is nothing more dispiriting than a snide 'have you even used the search query?'.
For three years I have. And would like data from a date closer than January two thousand six.

I would be remiss to not mention that this rarely happens on The High Road. A group of such pleasant humans I have not yet met. There will always be a bad apple, fortunately it does not spoil this bunch.

First answers can be wrong answers. For example, the Cooey rifle in its first year had problems with the magazine; the magazine was changed and reliability improved. Other times quality can go downhill (how many times have the last guns assembled at a plant that was closing down turned out poorly?). Searching the archives can be a good start and give you past history, but it can give you out-of-date info or opinions. If I wanted fresh answers, I'd post a question. If I wanted stale answers, I'd search the archives.

If you see a smart butt comment hit the report button. This cranky old man has been around a long time and I learn something here everyday.

I see these types of posts being left open until 2 or more members start to snipe at each other for whatever reason. There is no harm in leaving it open as long as it stays civil and high road. Once the bad apples slither in, the mods close it down.

This.

Some people think of forums as bastions of sound advice from experienced people, organized in a highly professional way. I think that's totally unrealistic. Forums to me are more like a slow version of a chat room. Sometimes the search can be useful, most often though it isn't, or only partially so. To be honest, if it weren't for thread drift you wouldn't have forums anymore. If you look at forums where they fight thread drift there's hardly anyone posting on them because everyone has said what they have to say on the subject at hand, and there's nothing left, so they move on to somewhere else. I think it's thread drift too where you actually learn something you didn't know, and the OP gets more information than he asked for as an added bonus.

I do like to read different perspectives also but if they write a book I'm not going to read it..........and if the OP argues with every answer then the thread gets skipped from there on out.

9x19 is much better than .45 ACP. I'm stating that. It bothers me when others argue about it.

Glocks are also perfection. It's science. No need to discuss.

This is my favorite thread.
