For the SHOOTING activities that you actually do- what is the least amount of handguns you could own to do them? "Heirlooms", "vintage collections", and similar safe queens don't count unless you want them to. For me, that number is 5 : A CCW like a shield 9, a 22 Ruger for practice, a Glock 19 for HD, a Glock 21 for "the woods", and a 1911 45 in the event that I have to go somewhere with stupid magazine or hollow point laws (which I try to avoid). Similar threads in rifles and shotguns.

9mm Shield for CCW , SD9VE , Mod 65 for home defense and 5906 just to have. I like a revolver because was very weak and sore after surgery and couldn't rack a slide. I usually try and shoot one or two every week .

For me, I CCW a S&W M&P FS when I can wear layers, and a SA XD-S when I can't. I reload my own lead ammo, so it doesn't cost me enough to justify a .22. I don't handgun hunt. So, 2 for me

Three:
1) A carry handgun gun to shoot at 9" paper plates at 21 or 25 feet (I currently do this with 4 different Glocks)
2) A target handgun to try to shoot small groups at 30 feet (I currently do this with a Buckmark and Ruger Blackhawk)
3) A "rifle" to try to shoot small groups, standing unsupported at 25 yards (I currently do this with a Ruger Charger with an AR buffer tube attached to provide a cheekrest):

If I had to pick just 1 handgun, I may be able to get it down to that few...

An XD45 compact (4" with compact frame): Target with cheap .45ACP, HD with any various HPs, the 10rd mag for CCW, 13rd extended mag for other stuff, and .45 Super hardcasts for woods carry.

Wouldn't be ideal across the board, but it would do it.

In order of most important to least important. I would just fine if I just had the first one but the rest serve a defined purpose so these are what I'm including

Ruger 4.2 inch sp101 357 mag, my general purpose everything gun

Ruger LC9s, carry gun/camping gun/beloved pocket plinker

5.5" Browning Buckmark, shown with redundant woodsman (the buckmark is a better shooter by a long way)

I would have said a G26 a couple of weeks ago. Then I sprained my wrist while sleeping. Not a big deal, ignored, then really sprained it two nights later. That G42 suddenly became a lot more important.

Hunting gun-contender
Hip gun-92 or Witness 10mm
Fun plinking-Single six and hp22
Pocket gun-Smith 30-1
Truck gun-AR pistol

6. I need 6. Unless my wife asks... in which my answer is that I need 5 more.

C220FAAB-0436-48CA-9818-A3981553C9A7.jpeg I have wrestled with this and thought I should never have more guns than hands. In reality you only need one gun. Just make it the best gun for your purpose.

I carry an older prelock Smith and Wesson 649 in .38 special, polycase with a fluted copper / polymer 77 grain non expanding projectile.

It’s fun for paper, it’s fun for plinking, and it’s an effective weapon that never fails and it can do it all without ever coming out of your jacket pocket.

Springfield loaded target 1911 with standard barrel and a drop in 460 kit. I might want to upgrade to a double stack 1911 if I had to thin the herd.

This is the one I have trouble with. I can pin down the least amount of rifles, shotguns and muzzleloaders I could live with.
However, my main love right now is handguns. Single action handguns to be exact.

Right now I only have 3, but my list of wants is nearly endless. I love everything about them, and couldn't put a minimum number on them.
Of course feelings change. In 5 years it may be lever action rifles. We'll see.

For the SHOOTING activities that you actually do-

I regularly use 3 types of pistols:
Ruger/tac-sol .22 6” for shooting squirrels, cats and cans
M&P full-size for defensive and combat shooting
S&w 327 8 shot 357 mag with interchangeable barrels 2-6” is my work gun I carry every day in the woods

If I had to further reduce I would go with just the 357. Changeable barrel lengths depending on purpose and loads from light 38’s to hot magnums will cover just about anything. Lightweight and 8 shots is nice too

A Ruger MKII would be nice for convenience BUT .22lr is not as cheap as it was, and when you handload, you can make a .44 Mag into almost any power level you want at a reasonable cost so a .44 revolver would be a must. Also a service pistol in 9mm or .40S&W.

If just one, then a Colt Government in .45ACP along with a .22LR conversion kit.

If more than just one, then a Beretta Model 70S, Ruger MK.II Model 512, SIG P238, CM9, Browning Hi-Power, S&W Model 649, S&W Model 686, and a Ruger Blackhawk Flattop .44 Special would serve me very well.

22LR semi-auto(Target-fun)
snub 38+P Special revolver(ccw)
357 Magnum revolver(Target- all around good gun to have)
44 Magnum revolver (Target-stopping power)
45ACP (Target-home protection)
That's all I would have to have bare minimum.

- Glock 22 for normal daily carry
- Springfield XDS in .45 for deeper concealment carry
- SIG 1911 in .45 and .22 conversion for home protection and plinking
- S&W 626 for target shooting
- S&W 500 for hunting, hurting my wrists and getting a laugh out of it when others shoot it...

Several more in the safe, but that would be my "minimum"

Ruger m111- .22 squirrel hunting
Sw model 27-deer hunting
Ruger super Blackhawk-deer hunting
Sw model 686.357-mag-hog hunting
Sw model 19-house gun
Sw model 66-truck gun
And all my .32’s- target shooting
