My weight fluctuates a lot but even when I don't have love handles I have sciatica, pointy hip bones and a lot of muscular tension in my thighs and hips. I also have to wear my belts quite tight because of my straight waist. I used to like pancake holsters before the sciatica but my last long hike with my Redhawk Alaskan .454 taught me otherwise. I like an OC holster with some drop that puts the butt of the gun anywhere between even with the top of the belt and an inch above. Like the authentic buscaderos from 1880-1920 (not the later below the belt Hollywood versions). For a full size or long slide auto gun like my 6" Witness Hunter that's 4-4.5" lower than most contemporary holsters.
I'm using a Simply Rugged Cuda pancake holster for my Witness with the belt straps normally used for inside the waistband on the outside to affect a 4.25" drop. The addition of a 1/8" leather thong thigh strap worn loose provides friction that holds the holster in a draw with no restriction whatsoever on movement and the weight of the gun on my belt not digging into my body even when sitting.
Now I'm looking for magazine holders. Just like the butt of the gun I would like the butt of the magazine no more than an inch above the top of my belt, not the bottom third of the magazine centered on the belt like so many contemporary designs--basically like knife scabbards used to be with the opening level with or below the bottom of the belt.
I'm looking for quality leather that will match the quality of my simply Rugged Holster and will fit a 1.5"x0.29" thick gun belt.
