torn between 3 options, want to keep the price below $600

Cz455 varmint tactical

Ruger Precision rimfire

Build a ruger through brownells, (brownells receiver, er Shaw barrel, ruger standard internals, bx trigger and victor company Titan stock)

I will put a vortex pst 4/16 that I already own on top of it, it’s purpose is to help with precision rifle training, try some 22lr precision matches, and have fun shooting tiny groups for cheap

CZs reputation for building consistently accurate 22 rifles is very established and widely known. This would be my first choice of the three that you mentioned. Building a Ruger would be my second choice. I have seen some heavy barrel Ruger builds at the rimfire matches that shot very well but the outcome of going this route is a little less certain. Plus, if you shoot at matches you'll need to manage your flying brass with the autoloader.... Last would be the RPR, it's just my opinion but this one strikes me as being a little more show than go....

I also asked on another forum, CZ seems to be the running winner. thanks for the replies so far, keep them coming!

99% of the time the answer is CZ or Anschutz if the money is there.

That being said I voted for do the build. Building these things out is so much fun and with a little tinkering you can end up with a tack driver that you can really call your own.

A CZ rimfire is never the wrong answer though.

have you completed a build? what kind of accuracy did you get out of it? I am going to try to compete with the gun so 1/2" or so groups at 50yds is strongly desired

I have no experience with the CZs but have heard that people use them for rimfire silhouette up in Canada. Not to be that guy who mentions something off the list, but I personally have a Savage mk II with a heavy barrel that gives me 1 MOA at 100 yrds. Action is nice and smooth and I like the rifle. Their accutriggers are very nice.

just saw this one. . . .it might be a contender . . . . .darn it, more decisions:thumbdown:

I have built a couple 10/22s and both have ended up as very accurate with most any ammo at 50/60 yards. I don’t generally shoot .22 past that so I cannot speak to 75-100 yard accuracy.

My CZs allow for the shooting of better ammo however since they are bolt action and some of the better .22 ammo doesn’t do well in semi autos in my experience.

I have the cz suppressor ready and I have a 10/22 with a Kidd ultralight barrel. Both shoot about the same. Cz has a factory trigger i was able to adjust down into the ounces area. It is so good it is hard to believe. I worked the 10/22 trigger myself and it is pretty good, but if you're not inclined, I'd send a factory trigger to brimstone before I bought a bx25.

I did not like the rpr I handled. It was really muzzle heavy. Fine for a bench, not not for an offhand shot, and I like my guns to be a little more well rounded than that.
Savages shoot well, but just look and feel cheap to me.
There is a Tikka coming out that looks interesting. http://www.tikka.fi/en-us/rifles/tikka-t1x/t1x looks like it may be $450.

The tikka looks awesome but aftermarket support and delivery are unknown

It takes regular tikka stocks, but what about magazines/bottom metal?

I am pretty sure I am gonna go cz, just a matter of figuring out local options (I would like to help the small local guys if they can support it)

My only experience of these 3 is with the ruger. I have a 22 mag and a 22lr. Both are supremely accurate.
22 mag is scoped and can shoot dime size groups at 100 yards.

They are also inexpensive enough that your budget should be able to allow for a nice scope.

You could get a CZ 455 with two barrels, factory fitted. Mine shoots great with .17 HMR, but would have preferred a two-barrel set with .22LR and .17 HMR. The Tacticool is nice and if you don't get it with two barrels, you could get another barrel later, however it "may" need to be fitted by a gunsmith (factory warning with my second barrel). Mine fit fine without any gunsmithing, however.

I didn’t vote for a few reasons, namely I am woefully ignorant on the subject of precision shooting and the various match rules. Second, while I own a 10/22 and a 452 I’m not sure either qualify as “match” grade shooters (certainly not the Ruger in factory dress).

If I were judging by your list I would scour the web looking for info on how well the RPR shoots, attend matches to see what others shoot, and get intimate with the exact rules of competition. Of the 3 choices it is the one purpose-built as a trainer for precision shooting.

For a personal choice based on a lack of knowledge as to aftermarket support on the Precision or how well it shoots, I’d go 10/22 build starting with a Feddersen receiver/barrel combo. Unfortunately a truly match rig will stretch that $600 budget to around $1,000 and if that’s not in the cards my opinion would be to strike it from the list.

I am about all Ruger firearms, but i found my American Rimfire .22mag to be only moderately accurate.

hey armored farmer have you tried the federal 50gr in 22 magnum that's the only round that my henry golden boy will shoot tight groups on, as I tried 30gr and 40gr bullets but the 50gr is the only ones it likes!
