Shotgun slug barrels?

I'm trying to identify a maker of 12 gauge slug barrels and/or barrel blanks. E. R. Shaw has barrel blanks advertised on their web site. But I received a reply to my purchase query that Shaw ceased manufacture several years ago. So I'm back to square one - locating a source. It would be pleasant to identify a maker who also offers chambering-fitting to receiver as an additional cost item, but this would be the cherry atop my hot fudge sundae.

With the knowledge that several states and [more] shotgun-only hunting areas occur throughout the country, finding barrels and/or barrel blanks should not be as difficult as it appears to be. My Internet searches show many slug shotguns for sale but, so far, not what I seek.

I've even considered buying slug gun just to acquire its barrel. I've ruled this out because such a fitted barrel is much less likely to fit my receiver. And it may be a total loss by its barrel shank having too small a diameter.

So . . . 12 gauge slug barrel blanks?
 
You don't mention the shotgun to which you wish to fit a 12ga slug barrel. That might help.

The obvious answer for deer hunting with a slug gun would be to pick up an H&R for @ $350. I prefer 20 ga which is perfectly adequate for deer and rather less brutal.

"H&R Slug" input into Gunbroker search yields about 8 12ga and 20ga. There are Remington 870 combo's with smoothbore and slug barrels available for under $500. Or, if you can find a good deal on a used 870, the slug barrels are available on Fleabuy for about $170...
 
The receiver is Winchester 1897 solid frame, circa 1920s. Please refrain from identifying problems that could be associated with this older shotgun. I've discussed them with myself and decided that I still wanted this specific model of this specific shotgun rendered as a slug gun. I like the gun and the action. For me, that's sufficient reason.
 
For that gun and those wishes, your best and cheapest bet is to buy a Mossberg barrel for a Remington 870. Cut off the front magazine ring and the receiver lug right at the exact point that you could then duplicate whatever mounting lug/points that occur on an 1897 barrel and weld them on. A painstaking and relentlessly expensive task if not done yourself.

Maybe a Mossberg barrel for a Mossberg 500 could work too. You can find either of these pretty cheaply second hand.

Unless it is done by someone with real talent it will be a hack job too but it could work. Truthfully, I have confidence I could do it myself but I know it would not be pretty.

This is the cost of being attached to a platform that was decades out of production when the advent of slug barrels occurred.
 
Breech where it's threaded requires at least 1.150 inches diameter. While manufacturers of rifled slug barrels for their own products are unlikely to furnish this information, perhaps those of you with barrels AND 1-2 inch micrometers or 6-inch dial calipers could furnish for their barrels? I suspect Mossberg, Remington, and others that rely on a locking slot would be unsatisfactory, break-open and bolt action shotguns might be able to?

I have a query into Hastings. We'll see.

I think that in theory at least, any barrel should work provide the correct modifications are made to exactly the right tolerances. Different diameters and whatnot will only effect the final visual outcome.

I only mentioned the Mossberg barrels above because they are cheap if your going to have to hack them up.
 
I want no part of welding on slug barrels.
I usually dont comment much on gunsmithing subjects, but this smells.
If you want to slug hunt with a '97, i understand completely. Believe me, i hsve taken deer with some old equipment that others only laugh at. If i wanted to seriously deer hunt with MY '97, i would simply cut off enough barrel enough to get the choke out, install some sights and shoot fosters.
 
I bought a couple of rifled 12ga blanks from Pac-Nor several years ago. I machined them into Saiga-12 barrels.
