Semi jacketed hollow point. There’s a copper jacket around the part of the bullet that contacts the rifling. Generally driven to a little higher velocity.

Lead semi wadcutter hollow point. All lead. Generally a little less velocity so it doesn’t smear as much lead in the rifling.

Both good rounds. Figure out which one works best for you and your gun, carry on.

In semi autos, you will usually only find semi jacketed hallow points and, the copper part will go almost or, all the way up to the hollow point so they don’t get smashed on the feed ramp.

Basic overview, not written in stone. Both are effective.

Hello, and please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I was wondering what the difference is between Hollow Point and Jacketed Hollow Point for self-defense.

Is there, and I'm guessing there is, a difference in performance between the two rounds? I'm guessing HP is the better cartridge to use for self defense? Any insights, knowledge, experience and help is greatly appreciated. I'm still new to shooting and the difference isn't readily apparent to me.
Since this question was posted in "Handguns" category, my comments will address pistol bullets. Since "self-defense" was mentioned in the OP, my comments will speak to premium defensive ammunition.

Main distinction between Jacketed Hollow Point and Hollow Point is the construction of the projectile.

Defensive premium Jacketed Hollow Point is made by punching a piece of gilding metal (copper alloy) into a tube and reshaping the gilding metal around a lead alloy core ending up with around .015"-.030" thickness jacket around the lead alloy core and reshaping/cutting the nose for expansion.

Defensive premium Hollow Point is made by copper plating a lead alloy core to gilding metal thickness (Like Speer Gold Dot HP around .018"+ copper plating thickness) and reshaping/cutting the nose for expansion - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...ng-at-25-50-yards.808446/page-3#post-10470195

Performance wise, JHP jacket can separate from the lead alloy core but the HP copper plating cannot separate from the lead alloy core.

I use both Golden Saber JHP/Speer Gold Dot HP factory ammunition for SD/HD applications and reload using bulk Golden Saber/Gold Dot projectiles for practice defensive loads and feel comfortable about performance of both jacketed and thick plated bullets.

It looks like ... cartridges come about 20 to 25 to a box ... to come 50 to a box.
Whether HP/JHP ammunition comes in 20/25/50 round boxes, they are same ammunition in different quantity boxes ... like 5/10/25 lbs of sugar.

FYI, I have bought many of my defensive ammunition from SGAmmo as they have not only 50 round boxes but 500/1000 round cases and you can buy Military/LE agency contract "white box" JHP ammunition for lower price (Often comparable to target ammo prices). Check them out - https://www.sgammo.com/catalog/pistol-ammo-sale

One example is Speer 124 gr Gold Dot LE for $29.95/50 - https://www.sgammo.com/product/spee...-standard-pressure-le-hollow-point-ammo-53618

I think the redhawk runs around 750-800 not chump change thats for sure. I adore my 629-8 which is Locked made in 06 but i understand the hesitancy and a 25/625 prelock around here cost a premium
I've seen the Redhawks run at least $100 more. I'd be choosing between that and an Iver Johnson .38 Super M1911 and a nice set of custom grips.

I've got a 25-2 and it's a great gun, easier to shoot well than my 14-2.

Guns went up... I bought two for around 750 and one of them was from Buds... https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/415005146/ruger+redhawk+45+acp+42
We may be looking at the same type of run we saw after sandy hook in this current climate.
